COUNTRY MERCHANTS
Cun Btivo money by culling on him.
Cleveland Ga., July, 21, 1893.
The Allianoe.
Tlte County Alliance met here
Wednesday, and spent the day
in an effort to revive itself. It
has been down with a complaint
in the legs since last years cum-
paigns.
District lecturer Henderson
spoke picturing with lurid words
the evils of the duy, and the
worse than shivery that threaten
ed every mini in tho country-
u n I css ho joined the alliance. II
drew tho most vivid picture pos
sible, of tyranny and oppression,
that hangs over tho country, like
a dark cloud ready to hurst into
u deluge. Only one remedy was
suggested—a panacea—join, and
sustain the alliance. Lecturer
Henderson is evidently in love
with his job, and knows that
with the dissolution of the alli
ance, his fat salary as district
lecturer will cease.
After being well scared by the
frightful predictions of Hender
son, Htato lecturer Walker en
deavored to persuade them hack
to the support of the alliance,
and in glowing words portrayed
the peace and prosperity that
will surely follow in the wake of
their proposed reform. Ho even
went hack to the tariff, and is in
favor of abolishing it entirely.
TIL speech was a reiteration of
tho alliance speech of four or live
years ago.
The effort to revive interest in
tho alliance in While county can
not meet with success, for wohav
too much confidence in the judge
ment of the yeoinanery to think
they will tie burnt with the same
fire n second time.
Thousands of dollars have al
ready been drawn from the pock
ets of our already overtaxed and
debt burdened farmers, and they
are too wise to voluntarily sub
ject themselves to a further tax
for the support of an institution
that is utterly without hope of
achieving success in a single item
of their proposed reform. Alli
ance dues are nothing move nor
less than contributions to a cam
paign fund for the benefit of a few
demagogues, and the support of
tho office-holders of the concern.

Cleveland is in need of many
things—it is a needy town, in
fact. Rut foremost among the
many is an addition to the pres
ent school house, and several
cheap renting dormitories for
the accomodation ol families who
would move into them during
the school term, and thus avail
themselves of tho excellent ad
vantages offered by our school.
The school house is too small
fpr the number of students, espe
Did you ever notice the class
of farmers Unit arc perpetually
crying “hard times?” We have
been out oil tho public square for
a few days lately, and in u easual
way have taken a note or two on
the subject. The “hard times”
farmer is “done laying by,” and
he is “laying by” with the crop.
His years work, except the har
vesting, is done. lie has one or
two yellow dogs at his heels and
an ante helium shot-gun on his
shoulder. Ho is going a hunting,
for he is “done laying by” and
has nothing else to do. Poor fel
low, lie has worked himself to
death for the last throe months in
his corn crop, and now he requires
recreation—the hard times de
mand that he should recreuto
himself.
Tho wife of C. C. Post, tho well
known third party leader, is do
ing a “queer business” under the
assumed name of Mrs. Helen

called mental science. She treats
her patients by mail at t. r > per

The People’s party are lighting
their fires early, for next years
campaigns. It is highly necessa
ry thut they do so, if they would
start even a small blaze. Wat
son, Henderson, and a few others
are working manfully at the bel
lows, hut it will take more than
wind to revive the party in White
county.
It looks now as if Hon. John J.
Kimsey, of this place, will he
practically without opposition in
the race for the judgeship of this
circuit. With Kimsey on the
boneli, and “Ruck” Candler solic
itor, the judiciary of the north
eastern circuit will be ably rep
resented.
Spring Place Jimplecute: Our
third party friends are a little
premature in preparing their bat
teries. The next campaign is a
yeur ofT and as there is no possi
ble chance for a genius of the
third persuasion to ride into office
at ihu capitol of Georgia, it is a
useless expense to expend money
in a canvas.
