Thin talk of timber for governor,
la tho aubjoct of the (lay.
But, why uae timber at all, we nakf
Muke the governor out of Clay.
Stand by the platform.
Congress will tako a vote on
tho Sherman 1 silver bill on Mon
day tho 2»th, inst.
llroken promises are not easily
forgotten by voters; neither by
the editor to whom you promised
a dollar on subscription.
Ellington, the Bard of Elijay
is singing again. He dreamptof
the time long ago when he got a
whole yenrs subscription in ad
vance.
Can’t North Georgia get up
bettor material than Steve Clay
for governor?—Albi ny News.
No; nor South Georgia either,
for sounder timber does not grow
in Georgia.
Nothing that congress could do
would please the populist so
much ns a complete defeat of the
free silver question. In its de-»
feat they see the democratic par
ty in the south disrupted ; and
when a democratic house, senate
and president, deliberately break
Abe party pledges, we may expect
nothing else but the breaking up
of the solid south.
No time should be lost by our
national legislators in determin
ing some fixed financial policy.
The times demand it. Thousands
of industries with closed doors
.demand it. Over two million peo
ple, an army of unemployed wil
ling workers, whose daily bread
depends upon their labor entirely,
demand it. Cut short the palav
ering and vote.

fying report of crops in his coun
ty, and says that they have not
been better since tho war. Ho
represents tho people as conten
ted and happv, and that not
even the present hard times are
ahlo to shake their faith in

Hints About Road Work.
Much interest is being manifest
ed throughout this section of
country on the subject of pub
lic roads. A road congress met
on the 15th. instant in Gaines
ville, and many points of interest
were discussed. Col. J. IV. Rob
ertson, of Habersham county,
made a speech, expressing his
views clearly and concisely
about the matter, lie favors the
enforcement of our present road
laws, hut does not want the roads
made good enough for u* bicycle
to ride over them. The bicycle
and its rider seems to be out of
favor with tho Colonel.
C. M. Straham, C. E., of Ath
ens, was exported to he present,
but could not attend, and sent
the following suggestions which
were read before the congress.
“First—You may not lie able
to build your roads with rock
covering. Few counties can af
ford this. But if the overseers of
your road work will devote their
efforts to properly draining the
roads much may ho done to bet
ter their condition. Water is by
all odds the strongest enemy with
which we have to contend in this
clay country. It will pay you
wherever the road runs alon
hill side, to dig storm ditches to
catch the water which runs down
from the adjoining hill side und
flows down the roadway as a
channel. Tho side ditches should
l»c deep and largo, and the water
should he turned away from the
road wherever it can ho done.
Second—The great defect in
our present road laws consists in
the week control of labor, the in
termittent attention to the roads,
and the unpleasant feeling engen
dered between the road overseers
and the people of his district.
The sooner we can pass to a sys
tem of paid labof the
better it will bo for the
State. Tho county which can
commute all of its “personal ser-
yico” Jfor a money equivalent cun
do at least twice as much work
with the hired labor as is now
done in iqost of our counties.
Third—We suffer terribly in
our road work for the luck of
proper equipment in road plows,
scrapes uhd road machines.
Good improvements for road ma
king do not cost very much, and
every county could well afford to
purchase a complete outfit. Ev
ery one who has studied tho sub
ject of moving dirt knows the day
of the pick and shovel has pnssoc J
Scrapes and road machines foi
grading and surfacing can do ten
times the work, with a small
number of men to run them.
Fourth—The work done on the
roads should bo supervised by a
skilled engineer, a man who has
devoted himself to the study of
the question, and who knows
hat is the best and most econo
mic method in which to have the
work done. If, when the hands
are at work on the roads, the
county would inipluy a man to go
over tho roads with tho road over
seers, ho could in a few days give
directions about grading and
draining which could bo easily
carried out by tho overseers und
result in a largo anual saving by
securing permanent benefits.
The additional cost to the county
would he slight.”
lion. Stove Clay is by far the
most popular of tho gubernato
rial possibilities yet mentioned,
and is gaining ground every day.
While ho is yot a young man, the
high position lie has held in our
legislative halls for severe! years
past, marks him a safe man. Wc
want a young man for governor,
one who has in him the energy of
youth, who will keep fully up
with the progress of the age, and
not allow Georgia to lag in the
rear column.
Georgia is an empire, it is true;
but other states besides Georgia
are empires, and have within their
confines men and women whose
mental capacity is equal to that
of Georjilins; and when we settle
down with tho idea that brainy
men and women will make Geor
gia great, without the aid of ad
vertising, nush, energy and the
keeping fu||y abreast with the
progress of tho (ime, twenty-five
years will qof elapse before out-
position in the order of progress
ive southern states will be re
versed.
Campmeetlng Motes.
Mossy creek camp-ground is so
widely and well known to our
readers, that a description of the
grounds would lie superfluous
The time honored cusvon which
has been observed for over forty
years, brought together this year
a goodly number of tent holders
and their families, for five days
of worship on the historical
grounds.
A greater number of strangers
than we ever noticed before
wore on the grounds, und
it is needless to say that
they were most hospitably
entertained by the tent holders.
Fairly good order prevailed the value
generally; but a few of the
boys seemed a little inclined to
be hoistrous and mischievious.
Steps will be taken next year to
pul on a patrol who will make it
warm for miscreants.' Camp-
meeting is a poor place to go for
a drinking bout, or a frolic.

ATTEMTIOM DEMOCRATS!
A mass meeting of the citizens
of White county will bo hold at
Cleveland on next Wednesday,
August 30th. Matters of interest
to the democratic party will be
discussed, and a full representa

Quarterly conferanco convened
Saturday, and notwithstanding
the hard times, the report from
tho difTernnt churches showed
well. Some of the churches are
behind, but it is blumable solely
to the stringency in money mat
ters, and not to an unwillingness
to support the church and its in
stitutions.

A collection was taken for the
building of dormitories at Mossy
Creek High School,and an amount
sufficient for the building of five
dormotories was raised. This is
a right step in the direction of
building up a first class High
School at Mossy creek. Nothing
is needed more than cheap rent
ing houses, where families may
move, and live at homo on the
grounds.
• • •
Much religious interest was
shown, and several conversions
hikI accessions to tho church, was
the result of the fervent preach
ing of the gospel. Tho preachers
present were: Rev. Thomas
Fierce, P. K., of Atlanta; Rev.
W. A. Dodge, of Atlunta, editor
of tho holiness paper “The Way
of Life;” Revs. Spencer and Sea
born, of Duhlonegu; Dorsey of
Mississippi; Stiiwell, of Lulu;
Warwick, of Ciarkesville; New
ton and Ledford, of Cleveland,
and M. L. Underwood, P. E., of
Duhlonegu circuit.

Among other visitors of proini-
nauco we noticed, Col. Howard
Thompson, of Gainesville; Col.
Huggins, of Athens; Col. Parks,
of Elhcrton, and several other
colonels of more or 1 -ss note.
Some one remarked tho Georgia
exodus of colonels from Wash
ington, I). C., had struck Mossy
