Amusing Reports.
Bomo nnnirtin<r roporln lmv
lieeii circulated mid, Ht range to
nay, /ruined credence among the
people in tho lower part, of the
county during' tho last two weeks.
Wo understand that a certain
man named Bridges, from about
Mt., Airy, who has an unsavory
reputation in White county as a
book agent, is the author of the
reports.
One report says that 250,000
laborers look possession of Wall
street last week, tearlii" up the
pavements and demolishing tho
houses with dynamite lionihs—
and that war has actually been
declared. All the result of a
democratic administration.
But here is a stunner. “Presi
dent Cleveland has run away—
loft tho country—and taken with
him two ear loads of money.”
That is the way it is being told.
We regret that there exists igno
rance so dense, as to give cre
dence to such reports,
Latku. The last rumor among
tho natives is, that President
Cleveland was shot and instantly
killed near Gainesville, while re
sisting arrest. Wo wait with
■open ears for the next report.
WASHINGTON NEWS.
No suTpiso was felt by anybody
when tho house passed tho bill
for the unconditional repeal of
tiho purchasing clause of t he Sher
man silver law. So nearly all
the members had announced in
advance now they would vote
that the result was a foregone
•conclusion days ago, The man
-who accepts this action of the
llouso as an indication Unit a ma
jority of its members oppose sil
ver as money makes a mistake.
It indicates nothing of the kind.
On tho con truly, an overwhel
ming majority ot ibe ! louse favors
bimotalisni, as will he shown by
future legislation. Those who
voted for repeal did so because
they agreed with President
Cleveland in believing that the
purchase of silver bullion by the
government was the main cause
of the country’s financial troubles
and that it ought, to bo stopped,
if for no other reason, because the
business sentiment of the country
is so strongly opposed to it.
Although the Wilson repeal
will not go to the Semite it is not
probable that it will be acted up
on, because tho Yorhees repeal
hill, with the clause declaring
liimctalisin to be the policy of the
United States, is already before
the Senate,bind is more preferable
to the democratic leaders in the
Senate. Although the opponents
of unconditional repeal still man-
tain a hold front in tho Semite,
since the great silver speeches of
Senators Yorhees and Hill, last
week, both of whom took strong
ground in favor of repeal, the sen
timent in favor of repeal has been
steadily growing, and it is now
the general opinion that tho ma
jority of the Semite will vote for
repeal when the bill can be voted
upon, hut when that will lie no
man can safely prediet, certainly
Out until there shall have been
one of the most memorable strug
gles in the aniMiU of the Senate,
as the Senators from the silver-
producing States will make use
of everv known p'liiiamoiitun
weapon to'prevent a vote.
Secretary Herbert cm see no
good reason why an Hgent of the
s P'ol Company, men
though that agent lie a naval of
ficer “on lcaveo" shall be furnish*
ed free of charge with a desk in
Ordinance bureau of the Navy
department, where he has access
to all tlie plnusoftliedepartment.
So he lias notified Lieutenant
Charles A. Stone, the Carnegie
agent, that he can no longer usi
the Navy department building
for hi« private office.
President Cleveland returns
to Washington this week to re
main until die close of the extra
session, and when that will he
depends on the Senate.
WAR REMINISCENCES.
JIT VI Win MOOSK.
Written for Tun l’lioiimcss.
Your paper last week in speak
ing of Ben < 'ampbell, t lie color
hearer of the 52nd Ga. Vols.,
calls to my mind several reminis
cences of him in tlie war.
Ben came to this county
(Lumpkin) just before the war,
a mere lmv from X. so you
see he is a tar heel by birth which
was a great help to make him
stick like he did. He was one of
the first to volunteer his services
in the Jst Ga. Ynl., m March,
IKfil. After serving his lime out
in that, regiment, he reinlisted in
our Co., (!. 52nd Ga., and was
elected a non commissioned ofli-
eer.
The first regular battle that we
were engaged in, was in Decem
ber 1852 at. Vicksburg Miss. Wo
went into (lie light about '! p. m.,
to reinforce some Louisnnu sol
diers, who wore hard pressed by
I he Yanks.
I shall never forget my feelings
as we marched into the breast
works among those bravo Lmiis-
au« boys. How they cheered us
as we took our position and pour
ed volley after volley into the
charging Missioiirians. There il
was 1 saw the first dead and
wounded of the war. We drove
the enemy hack. I guess »<>
must have hurt some of their feel
ings. Soon, however, they com
menced yelling and hooting and
here they eonm again. I just
stuck my head up above the
breastworks the smallest fraction
of a second and I thought that
the whole world was turning to
ynnkecs. I thought there must
have been some six or eight mill
lions of them. I thought then
that it forty cyclones mixed up
with n thousand thunder-storms
and old Bill Jones’ cane-brake a
burning could never have made
one tenth the noise that those
Yanks were leaking.
Our officers ordeied us to lire
low. I thought then that I never
wanted to see my mamma so had
in my life, but I happened to east
my eye to the left and there was
Ben Campbell on top of the
breastworks and the hoys were
handing Him loaded guns and lie
was firing right into that mass
"t least filly shots to the minute.
Why he was not shot into sau
sage im-.’t, " ill forever he ;i mys
tery to me.
The tight was continued until
after dark, they charge.! to the
very top of our breastwork; «(>
that the Maze of their guns was
in our faces. They also tried to
dig our breastworks down and
came very near succeeding but
they finally fell hack which put
an end to the battle for the time
being.
That night it rained and wo
stood in water knee deep all
night. Think of that, young
men of today, would von do that
for a cause \ on thought was right?
Some of you will say that this is
a lie, that the southern soldiers
never suffered half the hardships
that they say they did. Ask Jim
McAfee, Beit Campbell, John
Cantrell, any one that you think
will tell you the tiuth. Some
times I may borrow a little from
imagination but I don’t mean il
as an untruth. But we did stand
in the water all night amid the
cries and groans of the wounded.
Daylight the next morning, tl.e
battle was renewed with thesaue
result. About ten o’clock they
came with a white ting and asked
our Colonel (Phillips) for leave
to remove their dead and woun
ded, which was granted, the
ground was almost covered with
them, l'hoy must have lost ten
to our one. They were Missoer
soldiers anil lueve fellows. 1
have often wondered why they
would right against their own
people, hut history shows that
there was ns many in the Union
army South of Mason and Dix
on’s line as there was in the
southern army, that is, by throw
ing in the niggers as gougers.
As this letter is already ton
long I must quit, Imt I am not
done with Ben Campbell yet.

The Alliance is a mighty weak
thing in this county as it now

E:,s| year the alliance had a
