FOR SENATOR AND GOVERNOR.
Ahondy the pooplci ami press
of Georgia are calling out their
choice for governor and United
Stales senntor that are to he
elected next year. Any number
of good men have hern named
for both offices, and new ones hob
up serenely every day.
It is already conceded Hie the
governor is to he selected from
north Georgia, and the senator
from south or middle Georgia.
Mr. Turner is in the race for
senator, and Baron, DuRiguon
and Governor Northern are men
tioned as possible candidates.
Turner seems to he the general
favorite so far, hut it. is so far oil'
that all may yet lie relagatcd to
the rear in favor of a dark horse.
Blount, General Kvans, Atkin
son, Carlton and Clay have all
been mentioned for Governor,
hut, Hon. Steve Clay loads a full
length ahead and is immensely
populur throughout all north
Gcorgitt. lie is well known by
his record in our state legislative
hills as a man true to every inter
est that effect* our common wealth
and as a man of sound judgement.
Viewing the matter of a candi-
didute for governor from an im-
biysed and unprejudiced stand
point, we fail to see any one wlm
would fill tho gubernatorial chair
with more credit than Steve Clay.
WHITE COUNTY MINES.
Very lit tie talk is heard
just
now about the mineral resources
of this section, and little
new capital is being invested,
owing to the linuneial depression ;
but tliemiucsof White county are
attracting more interest to-day,
than they ever have done since
the first yellow nugget was taken
from the bed of Dukes creek.
Capitalist from the oast and
England are making impiiries
daily into our mineral wealth,
and a day never passes but the
pick and shovel of the prospector
tire heard among the gravel beds
of our mountain streams, and the
hammer of the mineralogist is
busy breaking into the golden
wealth of the quart/, ledge.
In the mean time the placer
works are steadily yielding their
wonted amount of dust and nug
gets, amounting to thousands of
dollars yearly. Not less than
twenty-live companies are at
The Queer Times we Live ip.
Nowadays, we urn constructing
the most expensive churches that
the world has seen since the days
of the ancient temples. They are
building one in New York which
is to cost +10,000,000. The meek
and lowly Na/.arenc use to teach
that the church of God was not a
“house made with hands,” or
composed of stviic and lime, etc.,
hut that God’s Temple was the
purilied 11uinn 11 Body. Suppose
that Christ,at. his coming advent
should wear what lie wore before,
a linen gown, a pair of wooden
-undid*, Ins feet sock less, and no
hat upon his head, do you imagine
the minister in t hat ten million
dollar church would be glad to
see .li’Hiis come in, that he would
welcome him with joy? ile
would he just as happy us the
money changers were in the tem
ple!
The liner our churches are I he
bigger does Mr. Krupp make his
death dealing camion. This miiv
seem •queer, nevertheless it i a
fact. lie now constructs those
a lion i ilia hie engines of destruction
so large that it requires several
tons of powder to load them, and
a hall is almost as heavy asa park
of artiilerv used to lie. We are
certainly strange creatures, for
we constantly build more church
es, and yet we constantly want
more guns.
The more wo embrace the doc
trine that we must love our
neighbors as ourselves, the more
thoroughly do we pnq a e to bore
a hole, through him with a Win
chester; the more we theorise on
returning good for evil, the more
do we practice trying to cheat
and get the drop on out lellow-
creature.—Morning Star.
Tho (iist days of golden, fruit
laden autumn are here. Alonir
the lanes the rosy cheeked apples
peep out fimn among the leaves,
and ripening fields of corn rustle
in the breeze, and how beneath
the weight of tluir own fruit.
The opening hull bleaches its libre
in the glorious sunshine, and the
market wagon creaks heavily be
neath its goodly load. Gentle
kino and snowy tlecced sheep
browse amid the rich grasses of
hillside and meadow, and the
gruntliug porker in the pen re
joice! h and waxetli fat. Truly,
the heart of man should rejoice
throughout this land, and amidst
a harvest of plenty, in a land of
peace, with his sturdy offspring
at his knee, give thanks.
M’liile other sections of the
country are suffering from the ef
fects of storms, riots and pesti
lence. the people of this sect Ton
are enjoying the most perfect
weather, peace and prosperity,
ami health. Wo of North Geor
gia have much for which we
should he ttally thankful.
Honest people, in general, do
not favor a “stay” law. Our
legislature is composed of honest
men, so lhere is little possibility
of the passage of such a bill. If
you will notice particularly, you
will see that the strongest sup
porters of the “stay" law are the
most liberal patrons of the home-
sli ad ami schedule laws.
