A Matter of Health,
K Bomekoepere faintly *eaHi!o the
Banker of an indiscriminate nao of the
numerous baking powders nowadays
found upon every hand, and which are
urgad upon consumers with ench per
sistency by peddlers and many grocers
on aocount of tho big profits made in
their sale. Most ef those powders are
made from sharp and oaustio aoids and
alkalies which burn and inflame tho
alimentary organs and cause indiges
tion, Uesrthnrn, diarrhooal diseases,
etc. Sulphuric acid, caustic potash,
burnt alum, all are used as gas-prodne-
ll>ff agents in such linking powders.
Most housekeepers are aware of tho
painful effects produced whon these
chemicals aio applied to the external
flesh. Mow much more acute must be
their action upon the delicate internal
membranes 1 Yet unscrupulous man
ufacturers do not hesitatoto use them,
because they make a very lew-cost pow
der, nor to urge the use of their pow
ders ao made, by all kinds of alluring ad
vertisements and false representations.
All the low priced or so-called cheap
baking powders, and all powders sold
with a gift or prize, belong to this
class.
Unking powders made from oliom-
ically pure cream of tartar and bi-enr-
bonate of soda are among the reest
uaeful of modern culinary devices.
They not only mako the preparation
of finer and more delicious cookery
possible, but they have added to tho
digestibility and wholcsomeness of
our food. Hut linking powders must
bo composed of such pure and whole
some ingredients or they must lie ta
booed entirely.
Dr. Kdson, Commissioner of Health
of Now York, in nn nrtiolo in tho
“Doctor of Hygieuo,’’ indicates that
tho advantages of a good baking pow
der anil the exemption from tho dan
gers of bad ones in which tho harsh
and oaustio ehomioals arc used, are to
be seonred by tho use of Royal Huking
Powder exclusively, and ho recom
mends this to all consumers. “The
Hoyal,” ho says, "contains nothing
lint cream of tartar and soda
reflnod to a chemical purity, which
when oornbined under tho influence of
heat and moisture protluco puro oar-
bonio, or loavoning, gas. The two
materials used, cream of tartar and
soda, nro perfectly harmless even when
eaten, but in this preparation they nro
combined in exact compensating
weights, so that whon chemical action
bogina between them in tho dough they
practically disappear, the substance of
both having been taken to form ear-
bonio-ooid gas. ” Hence it is, ho says,
that the ltoyal Raking Powder is the
most perfect of all conooivublu agents
for lenvoning purposes,
i It seems almost incredible that any
.manufacturer or dealer should urge tho
sale of baking powders containing in
jurious ehomioals in plnoo of those of
a well-known, puro and wholesome
character simply for tho soke of n few
cents a pound greater profit; but siuce
they do, u few words of warning seem
to be necessary.

B. G. Dun & Co. ’a weekly reviow of

about $150,000,000, greatly surpassing
the record of any previous quarter.
For the past Aveek the failures have
been 329 in the United Htates, against.

“Hope deferred” explains the past
week in part, and it is doubtless true
that many indulged unreasonable
hopes, but business lias not entirely
answered expectations. Tho feeling
of disappointment is commonly as
cribed to delay of action on the silver
bill in the senate. It is ulso true that
ninny works, which have resumed op
erations, do not find orders us large
or the demand from customers as vig
orous us they anticipated, and with
some it is u question whether they will
not close lignin. While money on call
lias been abundant and cheap, and about
$4,500,000 clearing house certificates
have been retired, there is n percepti
ble greater caution in making com
mercial loans nt New York and at Some
western points. Confidence, prover
bially of slow growth, 1ms been some
what diminished, in part, because ad
vancing exchange suggests tlio possi
bility of gold exports. The cotton
manufacture is gaining more than any
other, and there is a stronger market
for print cloths and prints, while some
reduction has helped to stimulate trade
in other goods. The enormous de
crease in production for the pant two
mouths begins to be felt, and sales are
larger, though much below the usual
qantity.

miners were entombed beyond hope of
rescue of any of them alive. Tho ac
cident oocurred during the night.
Tho Avater of tho river rushed into tho
mine and the men were entrapped like
rats. It is not possible that any es
caped. Most of tho victims are Cor
nish men and nine-tenths of them are
men with largo families. The number
of the victims is now placed at thirty-
seven. Mansfield is an isolated sta
tion on the Chicago ami Northwestern
railroad. The mine was the only ac
tive one in tlio Crystal Falls district on
account of its being a producer of
high-grade bossemer ore. It had a
producing capacity of about sixty
thousand tons per annum, and gave
employment to about one hundred
men. The Mansfield mine lms always
boon considered a dangerous one to
work iu, and Thursday .night's disaster
often been predicted.
Jupnn has three native fire insur
ance companies, well conducted, it is

William McKcekan, Druggist at
Bloomingdale, Mick. ” I have had
the Asthma badly ever since I came
out of the army and though I^kave
been in the drug business for fifteen
years, and have tried nearly every
thing on the market, nothing has
given me the slightest relief until a
few months ago, when I used Bo-
sehee’s German Syrup. I am now
glad to acknowledge the great good
it has done me. I am greatly reliev
ed during the day and at nightgoto
