COUNTRY MERCHANTS
Can save money by culling on him.
ClenladV Ga., October 13, 1893.
A SURPRISE.
Tuesday during- the noon hour
of court, Col. Weir Boyd of Dah-
loncgn. addressed a large audi
ence in the court house. From a
man with u democratic record of
forty yearn Mtauding, his speech
wna a great surprise to his many
White county democratic friends.
In some points wo heartily en
dorse the views of the venerable
Colonel, hut consider his attack
upon the president and house, as
yet untimely, When after the
lapse of sufficient time for safe
legislation, nothing has been ac
complished, then we will join the
grnnd'chorus demanding that our
bullets ho not violated. Hut now,
no. Two months, or four or six
months is not too long time to
devote to the tearing down of a
financial system, that has been
thirty years building, and which
■whom done, must Jbe built up
again, after a different design.
The passage of any bill, totally
disrupting by ono stroke our
present financial policy, bad as it
is, would result in the most dis
astrous money panic the country
has ever known.
In the resolutions, which ap
pear Mow, and which were read
by Col. Boyd, and almost unani
mous adopted by the assemblage,
the brond shoulders of the presi
dent are made to bear the heavy
responsibility of all this delay,
und filibustering in house and
senate, when in fact lie has noth
ing to do with it. The president
has his own view of the silver
question, certainly; but every
democrat who knows his record,
sees him in precisely the same at
titude he was four and eight
years ago.
Just now, wo would pro
mulgate tlie doclrino of patience,
und after proper time, if our lead
ers have betrayed us, then it is
we would upbraid and condemn.
It is vagi.c'y reported that Col.
Boyd has an eye on a seat m our
next stale senate, as Lumpkin
county is entitled to the member
next time, and that he is taking
a policy course. That may do in
Lumpkin county, hut it won’t
work hero, for wo must know
just where to place our finger on
him now, before either pnrtv
takes him up. Come off the
fence, colonel; wo believe you to
have been always a staunch dem
ocrat, but it does strike us most
forcibly now, that praise of Tom
Watson, and the utterance of the
words to the effect that Tom
V atson or some man that be
lieves nearly like him would till
tho next governors chaii, indi
cates that the colonel is a little
more than half way over on the
other side.
Below are resolutisns read and
adopted.
Whereas, it is the r,institutional ei^-lit
sad privilege of American citizens, at
all times, to petu'uMy nail publicly as

«rwl measure* which may ami do affect I
the in tore nt and welfare of the people. |
The exercise of thin right become a very
esHenlial, when the people are in a crisis
if peril, a a at the prHAant time. The
president and U. 8. Senators and rrpre-
nenativ«*A in eengrcHB and all other offi-
rs, Hfiile o.t Kederaif are not rnnsterH,
but only servants of the people, and are
ally and politically bound to execute
the wish of the j*«i|>le, as fur an the surne
has been expressed.
We the people of White county Ga.,
und of other hi* (Toil tiding counties as*
milled at Cleveland, On. on this
the 10th, dny of October, 1803, without
regardtoour former political relation.
Resolved 1st, That we strongly eon-
detnn the attitude and efforts of presi
dent Cleveland und all other mem bets of
tile cabinet, and of eongrcBH who co-
pemte with him in refusing to imumdi-
alely providing relief to the people, in
the free coinage of silver, and restoring
it to its Constitutional statiiH. as fixed by
the fathers of the republic, and unpledged
by the platforms of all the parties in the
late presidential contest.
Resolve 2nd, That we respectfully and
earnestly request our present congress
to quit wasting’ their 1im * on imma
terial side issues, and ad Irens them
selves to the repeal of the 10 per cent tux
on slate bunks modify the tariff and
other remedial legislation in the adjust
ment of our financial system.
The foregoing is not to he considered
i a rebuke to those heroic senators and
represenatives who have so manfully
spoken and acted in the senate in favor
of the free coinage of silver. We hope
they will speak on 'till dooms-day rather
than silver should be further debased.
Resolved 3rd, That the secretary of
this meeting furnish Tub Clkvkland
Prouhehs with a copy of the foregoing
for publication, and that other news )ia-
l»erM in our state which are favorable to
these views advanced, be requested
publish.
A WONDERFUL REYIYAL.
Oiks of tho most, wonderful
meetings over held in Wbiti
county, or North-east Gooririii,
has just closed at Mossy creek
church, of which Rev. II. M.
Newton is pastor.
Tho whole number of conver
sions ran up to 121, and the ho
cessions to tho Methodist church
numbered 77. Many others of
the converted will unite with the
different churches.
This Hns been a wonderful mcot-
inir indeed. Feuds of years
standing have been settled, infi
delity trembled, religious bigotry
drooped its head, and scctari ni-
ism was made ashamed.
Prayer meetings were organized
by bands of young men and young
ladies, and it is stated that every
student of Mossy Crook High
School was converted. Nine in
infants were baptised Sunday
morning, at tho request of newly
converted parents.
Cleveland circuit has been most
wonderfully blessed this year.
All collections for missions, bish
ops, widows and orphans arc
paid to date, and the fact that
there has been two hundred ac
cessions to the church, and over
two hundred and fifty conver
sions, shows the light of a new
era has dawned.
Other protracted meetings are
to be held soon, one at Nuooo-
choo and one at Zion.
Ad Indian Legend.
In the shadows of Yonah mountain,
In a valley whore spruce pines wave,
On a lovely mound by the river's edge,
Is Naeooehoe and Santee's grave.
An Indian legend tolls u.v,
Jlow a century back, they mot
And plighted their* vowh to each other.
And those vows are unbroken 'till yet.
That. 8aut*e was tall and handsome,
Nacnochee, no pen could describe,
8ho, belonged to the Cherokces,
And he, to the Chickasaw tribe.
How the chiefs of these tribes had forbid
den,
That these indinn lovers should wed,
Rut Santee came and stole tho girl.
And away to the mountains they fled.
The wily chief of the Cberokoes,
Called Ihh warriors to his side,
Then a race began, to lose, lost his child,
Rut to Nautco, to win, was a bride.
For weeks wore they gone, not a trace
coul I tie found,
Though the search was kept up with
out pause,
For the Cherokees thought [hat Nautco
had gone,
To the land of the Chickasaw's.
At last to the mountains, the lovers were
traced,
Then upward they climbed, hand in
hand.
Till at lnsCThe cliff on tho Yonah was
reached,
Anti naught couhl they do but to stand.
Relow, in pursuit came the chief and his
braves,
Tho race, to him, nearly won,
Haute®, kissed the lust time, the girl by
his side.
In the rays of the setting sun.
Nucoochee begged for Santee's life,
Rut they sternly answered her, “No,"
Anti by the brawny hands of two stalwart
braves,
lie was hurled to the rocks below,
'Twas her father's command she witness
hiH death,
Then the air with her shrieks she rent,
“Santee, Santee, Nautee," she cried,
Then over the cliff, site went.
On the cruel, jagged rocks below.
The dusky lovers died,
And the sorrowing chief had them car
ried away.
And they buried them sftlt* by side.
On a picturesque mound, in tho valley
below,
’Till time and all else shall cease,
Nautee, by the side of his beautiful brhle,
.Shall sleep in Eternal peace.

A Temperance Lecture.
Tuesday night the people of
Cleveland enjoyed the rare treat
of listening to one of the masters
of eloquence, in the_ person of
lion. M. 0. Boyd, of Dahlonega,
who delivered a lecture on the
emperuneo question.
The Baptist church, where he
delivered his lecture, was crowd
ed, and he held his atidiancc for
an hour and a half, eager listen
ers to the truths, he told them of
the danger attending tho youth
and manhood of this mountain
country. His talk was neither
theoretical nor hearsay, but he
spoke as a man who has experi-
anced all the evil effects of intem
perance, and whoby the help of
a most wonderful cure, has lifted
himself out of a most horrible
condition, can only speak.
