THE GOLD MIRES OF GEORGIA.
Recently the Constitution Inis
published several articles on
Georgia gold, and gold mining,
but by some strange oversight,
has not included in the counties
mentioned, one of the real gold
producing counties of the state.
We do not pretend to say there
is no gold in the counties that
have hcou ment ioned, for we be
lieve there is gold in piiyingquun
titles throughout the entire min
eral belt, in Georgia and Ala
bama, hut the idea of calling at
tention of capitalist, to localities
■Where there has never been a mine
that, was worked with success,
seems a laid policy. Doubtless
low grade sulpherretto ores exist
in paying quantities in all the
counties included in the gold
belt, if any of the new processes
for reducing refractory ores prove
successful, hut, these new pro
cesses all require expensive out
lay, and capital has reached the
point where it, will take hold of
no experiment at heavy expense.
Why not cite capitalists to the
gold producing counties of the
state—White, Lumpkin, Ralmn,
and ethers, where capitalists may
come and see with open eyes the
free gold crushed from its prison
of quartz, and washed from its
bed in the hills?
Once fnirely recognized as a
gold producing state, every foot
of land inside the limits of the
gold holt, will he eagerly sought
after by investors, but it is a laid
plan to call attention to the poor
est section of the gold belt tit the.
beginning, if we wish to secure
proper recognition.
It Dawned Upon Them.
The grand jury in their pre
sentments made a recommenda
tion. Uy some means it became
known to them, that, the county
jail is not what it ought to he
from a sanitary point of view,
and they recommended that new
stops leading to the jail door, be
constructed. After second
thought:alid, we suppose, through
deliberation, they also rcecom-
mended a new floor for the dun
geon, ns the present one is “damp
and moldy” anil that propper
ventilation lie given the building.
It seems to us that every dollar
spent in repairs on our jail is
thrown away. It is located in a
had place to begin with, and is
so constructed that it cannot be
made a safe prison at am expense
less than the cost of a new buil
ding. The best thing that could
he done with it, is to tear it down
and sell the remains for kindling
wood—then build a new one,
properly situated, and const me
ted so that prisoners could lie
kept at home safely, and with
proper regard for their health
and comfort.

Professor Yates will be in

In our young clays we used to
watch with interest the advent of
the new patterns of pipes. There
were Tilden pipe's, and Speer
pipes, and Hancock and Candler
pipes, but the most popular
among our people now seems to
be the well known Clay pipe.

and lined CiO and cost.
In the. State vs. Humphries,
Humphries was found guilty and
lined $JO and cost.
Several eases were nolle pres
sed, and other continued.
Th< eases of the State vs. Van
diver, and t ’ason, in hot li of which
great interest was felt, were con
tinued to next term.
The grandjury was dismissed
Thursday, having sat four days
in high stale and accomplishing
nothing. 'Their work was of so
little importance, that, they deci
ded among themselves that, their
presentments were not worth the
cost of publication in the county
paper. lienee, they do not ap
pear. We understand, however,
t hat eei tain members of t he grand
jury attempted to do some great
things—one amongst others, be
ing an eli'orl to put, on
foot a move abolishing
the board o( Roads and
Revenues. A want, of nerve in
the lender of the scheme-, and
apathetic support killed it. t!
does seem remarkable to us, that j
a grand jury will come together i
yeiir after year, and instead of!
addressing its iH’orts to the im-'
proveinent of tin; county, and its
institutions, that it should fritter
away nine-tenths of its Iime in
listening to personal grievances,
and doing dirty spite work.
There is no use denying that a
great deal of such work is done
each year. We make no imputa
tions against any member of the
grand jury in particular, but
every one knows that, there are
attempts made every year to have
the gland jury subserve some pli
cate interest.
