Wore great moral questions involved, but

Tho only question about which they
roomod to b© interested was concerning the
Wages and tho salaried positions. Tho silver

t»o inaugurated tho business will go down,
tho laborers will be thrown out of employ
ment and the whole city will suffer. Well,
What is to bo done? “(’all a convention *
says so mo one, for in all ages a convention
nas been a panacea for public ovils. Tho
convention iu called, and as they want tho
largest room in the city they take tho theatre.
Having there assembled, they all want to
get the floor, and they all want to talk at
one©, 1 ou know what excitement that al

umnv people want to talk at once. Soma

Wanted to denounce, some wanted to resolve.
Aftor awhile a prominent man gets the floor,
and he begins to speak, but they very soon
hiss him down, and then tho confusion rlsoa
into worse uproar, and they begin to shout,
nil of them together, and they keep on until
they are rod in the face and hoarse in tho
throat, for two long hourscrying out “Great
Is Diana of the Ephesians. Grout is Diana
OX tho Ephesians !”
t Tho whole scone reminds me of tho excite
meat we lmve almost every autumn nt th«
elections. While that goddess Diana lias lost
her worshipers and her temples have gone
Into tho dust, our American people want to
set up a god in place of her, and they want
us all to bow down before it, and that god ia
political party. Considering our superior
civilization, I have to declare to you that
Ephesian idolatry was less offensive In the
sight of God than is this all absorbing Ameri
can partisanship.
F While there are honost men, true men,
Christian men, who stand iu both politico!
parties, and who come into the autumnal
elections resolving to servo their city ortheii
State or the Nation in tho best possible way,
I have noticed Also that with many it is a
mera contest between tho ins and tho outs—
those who are trying to stay in and keop the
outs out, and those who are trying to get iu
and thrust tho ins out. And one party cries,
•‘Great is Diana of tho Ephesians !” and the
other party cries, “Groat is Diana of till
Ephesians !” neither of them honest enough
to say, “Great is ray poeketbook !”
• Onaa or twice a year it is my custom t«
talk to tho people about publio affairs front
what I call a Christian standpoint, and
this morning I have chosen for that duty. I
hope to say a practical word. History telle
ns of a sermon once pronohod amid the high
lands of Scotland—a sermon two hours long
—on tho sin of luxury, where thero wore not
more than three pairs of Shoos iu tho nu*
dienoc, and during our last war a good man
went into a hospital distributing tracts and
Save a tract on “Tho Sin of Dancing” to a
man both of whoso legs had boon amputated I
But I hope this morning to present hn ap
propriate and adapted word, as next Tues-
iay ut tho ballot box great affairs are to bo
lot Med.
Tho Rev. Dr. Emmons, in tho early his
tory of our country, In Massachusetts
f (reached about the election of Thomas Jef-
omon to tho Presidency. Tho Rev. Dr.
Mayhew, of Boston, in the early days of our
republic, preached about the repeal of thfe
stamp act. There are times when ministers
of Christ must look off upon public
affairs and dis.juss them. Wo need go back
to no example. Every mint is, before God,
responsible for his own duty.
If tho Norwegian boasts of his home of
rocks, and tho Blbori&u is pleased with his
land of perpetual snow; If tho Roman
thought that the muddy Tiber was the
favored river in tho sight of heaven, and li
tho Laplander shivers out his eulogy of his
native clime, and if the Chinese have pity
for anybody born outside of tho Floworj
Kingdom, shall not wo, bom under these
fair skies and standing day by day amid
those glorious civil an l religious liberties,
bo public spirited? I propose to tell tho peo
pie very plainly what I consider to botheii
Christian duty at tho ballot box !
First, sot yourself against all political false
hood. Tho most monstrous lies over told in
this country are during tho elections. Istor
nttho door of a Democratic meeting ant
listen and hear that tho Republicans are liars.
I stoo at tho door of a Republican meeting
and listen and hear that tho Democrats ari
scoundrels. Our public mon raicroscopizod,
and the truth distorted. Who believes i>
tenth part of what ho reads or hears in tin
autumnal elections? Men who at other soft*
sons of the year nro very carefulln theU
speech become peddlers of scandal.
fn tho far east there is a place where once
n year they l u t the people do as they please
and aay what they please, an 1 tho place is
full or uproar, misrule and wickedness, and
they caU it the “devil’s day.” The nearest
approximation to that in tills country has
been the first Tuesday in November. Th«
community at such times seems to say, “Go
to, now, let us have a good time at lying.”
Prominent candidate! for office are de
nounced as unprincipled and renegade. A
smart lie will start in the corner of a country
newspaper, an 1 keep on running until it has
captured the printing presses of the whole
continent. What garbling of speeches ! What
misinterpretation of motives! What mis
representation of individual antecedents!
The trouble is that we have in tills country
two great manufactories—manufactories ol
lies—the Republican manufactory of lies and
the Democratic manufactory of lies—and
they are run day and night, and they turn
out half a do/.-m a day all equipped and
ready for full sailiug. Largo lies and small
lies. Lies private and lies public and lies
prurient. Lies cut bias and lies cut diagonal.
Long limbed lies and lies with double back
action. Lies complimentary and lies do-
famatory. Lies that some people believe,
and lies that all the people believe, and lies
that nobody believes. Dies with bumps like
camels, and scales like crocodiles, and necks
is long as storks, and feet as swift as an an-
lelc&e's. and stings like adders. Lies raw
and scalloped and panned and stewed
Crawling lies and jumping lies and soaring
lies. Lies with attachment screws uni
rafflers and braiders anil ready wound bob
bins. Lies by Christian people, who nevoi
lie except during elections, and lies by peo
ple who always lie, but beat themselves in a
political campaign.
I confess I am ashamed to have a foreignei
visit this oountry in these times. I should
think he would stand dazed and dare not gc
out at nights ! What will the hundreds ol
thousands of foreigners who come here to
live think of us? What a disgust they must
have for the land of their adoption ! The
only good thing about it is that many of them
cannot understand tho English language,
put I suitor^ the Gorman and Italian and
Swedish and French papoM translato it all,
and peddle out tlib Infernal sluff to their sub-
•criboM,
Nothing but Christ 1anity will over stop 9uch
a flood of indecency. Tho Christian religion
jvtll speak after awhile. Tho billingsgate and
low scandal throvigh which wo wade almost
ever) autumn must bo rebuked by that ro-
llglon which speaks from its two great moun
tains, from tho ono mountain intoning the
command, “Thou shalt not boar false wit
ness against thy neighbor,” and from the
other mount making plea for kindness and
love and blessing rather than cursing.
0 Christian mort, frown upon political fulso-
hood! Remember that a political lie Isas
black as any other kind of a lie. God has ro-
•orde 1 all tho falsehoods that have boon told
it the city, State or National elections since
the foundation of this Government, and
though tho perpetrators and their victims
may have gone into the dust, in tho last day
judgment will bo awardod.
The falsehoods that Aaron Burr breathed
Into tho ear of Blonnorhassett. tho slamlor<
that Lieutenant Oeuoral Gage proclaimed
about George Washington, the misrepresen
tations in regard to James Monroe, are ,*u
fresh in God’s book to-day as the lies thal
were printed last week about our local can-
tidates, “And all liars shall h-ve t^dr pari
In tho lake wKloh nurnoth with fire and brim-
•tone, whioh is the second death.”
Again, I counsel you as Christian mon to
lot yourselves against the misuse of money
in political campaigns. Of tho thousands of
dollars already spent this autumn, how much
of t no amount do you suppose has been prop
erly used? You have a right to spend money
for tho publishing of political tracts, for the
establish incut of organizations for the carry
ing out of what you consider to bo the host
you have a right to appeal to tho reason of
men by argument an 1 statistics and by facts.
Printing and renting of public; halls and po
litical meetings cost money, but he who puts
a bribe into the hand of a voter or plies weak
men with mercenary and corrupt motives
commits a sin agulnst God and the Nation.
Bribery is one of tlie most appalling sins
of this country. God says, “Fire shall con
sume the tabernacles of bribery.” JIuv«
nothing to do with such a sin, 0 Christian
man ! Fling it from the ballot box. Ham)
over to tho polio© tho man who attempts to
tamper with your vote, and remember thal
elections that cannot be carried without
bribes ought never to bo carried at all
Again I ask you os Christlrn men to sot your
selves against tho dissipations that hoverovei
tho ballot box. Let mo say that no man ear
nftonl to iro into nnlitic.nl life who is not J
teetotaler, llot political discussion somehow
creates an unnatural thirst, and hundreds of
thousands of mon have gone down into
drunkenness through political life.
After an exciting canvass through the
evening you must “take something,” and
rising in tho morning with loss animation
than usual you must “take something,” and
going off among your comrades through the
forenoon you meet political friends, and you
must “take something,” ami in tHo afternoon
you meet other political friends, an 1 ym
must “take something,” and being night has
come something lias taken you. There are
lmt few cases whore mon have boon able to
stand up against the dissipations of politic il
Joseph was a politician, but ho maintained
his integrity. Daniel was a politician, but
ho was a teototalor to tho las*. Abraham
was a politician, but ho was always charac
terised as tho father of the faithful. Moma
waii a politician, tho grandest of thorn, but
uo honored God more than he did the Phar
aohs, and there are hundreds of Christian
men now in the political parties maintaining
their integrity, even when they are obliged
to stand amid the blasted, lecherous an 1
loathsome crow that sometimes surround the
ballot box—these Christian men doing their
political duty and then oomlng back to the
prayer meetings and Christian circles as pure
as when they went out. But that is not the
ordinary circumstance—that is the exoei>
tlon. 1
How often you seo mon coming back from
tho political conflict, and their eye is glazed
and their cheek has an unnatural flush, and
they talk louder than they usually do, and a!
tho least provocation they will bet, and you
say they are convivial, or they are exceed-
ingly vivacious, or you apply some other
sweet name to them, but God knows they are
drunk ! Home of you, a month or six weeks
npo, hurt uo more religion thon you ought to
have, nml nftor tho citations nro ov«r to cal
culate how muoh religion yon luivo loft will
lw n sum In vulgar fraotions. Oh, tho nres-
luro Is tremendous !
IIow many mighty Intellects have gone
downunrter the dissipation of politics! I
think of ono who came from tho west. He
wns ablo to stand out against tho whole
American Honato. God hurt given him fac
ulties enougn to govern a kingdom, or to
frame a constitution. His voice whs terri
ble to his country’s enemies and a mighty in
spiration in the day of National peril. But
twenty glasses of strong drink a day were
his usual allowance, and ho wont down into
tho habits of a conflrmod Inebriate.
Alas for him ! Though a costly monument
has boon reared over Ids resting place, tho
young men nt this oountry shall not lie de-
alert the awful lesson that the agency by
which tho world was robbed of onu of its
mightiest Intellects, and our country of om
Df Its ablest constitutional defenders, was the
dissipation of political life. You want to
know who I mean? Young man, ask your
father when you get home. The advursotlde
fearful, and I warn you against it.
You need not go far olT to find tho worn-
out politician. Here he is, stumbling along
the highway. Ills limbs hardly able to hold
him up. Bent over and pale with exhaust
ing sickness. Burly to anybody who noeosts
him. His last decent article of apparo:
pawned for strong drink. Glad If, when go
ing by a grocery, some low acquaintance In-
vites him in to take a sip of ale and then
wiping his lip with his greasy sleeve
Kicked off the stops by men who once were
proud to be his constituents. Manhood ob
literated. I,Ip blistered with a curse. Bean
of brutal assault on cheek and brow. J-’oul
mouthed. A crouching, staggering, wheel
ing wretch. No friends. No God. No hope.
No heaven.
That Is your wornout politician. That is
what some of you will become unless by lids
morning’s warning and tho mercy of Go!
your steps are arrested. Oh. there are no
words enough potent, enough portcntlous.
enough consuming, enough damning, to de
scribe the horrible drunkenness that ha-
rolled over this land, and that has bent dowc
the necks of some of tho mightiest intellects,
until they have been compelled to drink out
of the trough of bestiality and abomination I
I warn young men against political life, un
less they nro teetotulers uud consecrated
Christian men.

Again, X counsel you that when y
the ballot box at the city, or Ihe Btat

O Christian men, take out your Bible tldi

est kind of a patriot is a Christian patriot
Gonsecrntu yourselves, first to Got, then
you will know how to eonsuerato yourselves
to your country. All these political excite
ments will bo gone. Ballot boxes nod gu

A Chicago special says: Sucli scones
woro never before enacted in the cham

Chicago ns transpired Saturday. Be
fore tho crepo-drapod speaker's desk
stood two aldermen, opponents politi
cally in tho council, each declaring

eject him from tho stand. A clerk of
tho body tore up a resolution regular
ly introduced, because it was not in
lino with what his party desired. Over
tho orepe-drapod rail of tho speaker’s
stand leaped another alderman upon
tho book of tho clerk. To his aid
flocked his colleagues. Upon him
jumped an alderman of the opposing
faction, throwing oil' his coat ns he

WORK OF BOMB THROWERS.
Fifteen People Killed nnd Many In
jured by an Explosion.
A special of Wednesday from Bar
celona, Spain, says: Tuesday night,
during tho performance of "William
Toll," nt the Dycourn oporn liouso, a
place mu oh frequented by the elito of
Barcelona society, two bombs, pre
sumably loaded with dynnmito, wero
thrown from tho gallery. Ono ex

every person iu the house sprung to
to his feet in terror and dismay. Wild
shrieks and erics of agony rose from
the lower pnrt of the honse, nnd it was
known that many persons had been
injured.
FIFTEEN BODIES IN ONE HEAP.
When the wreckage was in Homo de

fifteen (lead bodies, of which six wero
