Bank of Knglnntl Ofldlilw.
Among the curioalties which are oc
casional)/ shown to favored visitors
arc Home spcci/nmis of ancient notes, a
number of them for denominations no
longer in vogue, hiicIi hr £J, XI5 and
X2.3. Them in nlno careful 1/ preserved
the oldest surviving note, one of tho
year 1009, tho amount being written
with ink, nays tlio Pall Mall lUid(/ci.
A nother curiosity is it note for £1,000,-
000, ($5,000,000) which was required
for Home transaction between the bank
and the government, but in this case,
too, tho amount, in written with the
pen. The longest time during which
a note linn remained outside tlio bauk
i« 111 yearn, ft was for £25, and it
is computed that tho compound
interest during that long period
amounted to no Hjhh than £6,000.
There i« quite a labyrinth of vaults
where the dimmed notes are stored un
til they have reached the necessnrv
maturity of live years. They are esti
mated to weigh ninety-one toim, and
number about. 77,745,000, tilling 13,-
400 boxen, nml wore of the original
value of £1,750,626,600. The Hank of
England note m a legal tender for any
amount in ozcchh of its face value, but
not. for less. Thus a person might re
fuse to take a £5 note in payment of a
debt of £4 10» Gd, though, as a matter
of fact, it must be remembered that
bank notes are only legal tender as
between members of the public, so
long as the bank pays in gold on de
mand. If such an unlikely thing were
to happen aft the bank being unable to
redeem its promises to pay, then itH
notes would at once cease to bo legal
tender. Even as it in, their legal ten
der quality does not extend to Ireland
or (Scotland.

Williams' Pink Pill* for Palo People In the
Kentucky To»L This whs something new, 1
and as one more drug after so many others !
could not do so much harm. John prevailed
Upon me to try the Pink Pills, It was, I
think, in the first week in May tho pills nr- j
rived. I remember I was not expected to
live for more than three or four days at the
time. The efTect of the Pills, however, was
marvelous, uud I could soon eat heartily, a
thing I hnd not done for years. Tho liver
began almost instantaneously to perform its
functions, nnd has done ho ever since.
Without doubt, the pills saved my life, and,
whilo I do not crave notoriety, I cannot re
fuse to testify to their worth.
Tho reporter called upon Mr. Hughes, the
