LAST WEEK".; CONVENTION,
' The Democratic convention
which mot lust week in Alliintii.
proved ilsclf worthy of tin; cause
it represented. If, wits a nolnhle
gathering, in that li, placed at the
head ol tin 1 party oni! of the most
active, honest, and brainy men in
the state of Georgia. The elec
tion of Steve Clay to the clnir-
lllllllslnp of the State Kxeentive
Cimimittee means a victory for
Dem.ieraev as brilliant as the
campaign of 1802.
William V. Atkinson of Cow
eta, was nominated by aeohima-
4ion for (jovernor, and will mill
'Georgia u chief magistrate who
will do the oillco honor. He is
young; he is active; lie is pro
gressive; ho is an honest man,
and a statesman. He has had a
broad licit! of experience in all af
fairs of state, and when he shall
take posession of the (iiihernatn-
lial chair, we will rest in the as
surance that(ieorgia'saffairs will
he wisely administered.
All the old state house oHicors
were renominated hy neclamtion
except lion. A. I). Candler, Sec
retary of State, who had an oppo
nent. Candler's majority over
Clifton was 47.
Thu platform adopted is one
that is highly satisfactory, and
may he considered a compromise
of both the extreme views of
those favoring the Presidents (i-
nancinl policy, and those oppos
ing it, which threatened trouble
at one time in the state.
Now all together for thegrand-
-ost victory Democracy has ever
achieved. We have able leaders,
and good men on cur tickets, the
finest speakers in the south to
stump the state, and the same
strut hearted yeomen we had twi
years ago.
The quest ion is not t he mere
heating of the Populist, hut the
heating of them so badly thc\
will never reco\ cr.
MAJOR BACON ANT
NTS TLAI UCERS.
Then • seems to tie an almost
unanimous public sentiment in IV.-
vor of electing Hon. A. (). Ilacon
to thel’niled Stull's senate to
succeed lion. Patriot Walsh. The
counti \ papers of the state are
speaking out for Huron, and nine
times out of ten the eoimtn pa
pers represent public sentiment.
i here are, however, a few pa
pers in (icorgia whose cdilois
seem to have a personal grudge
against Major liacoii, and wo no
tice that they arc turning llmii
batteries on him and abusing him
at a terrible late. 1'hese sore
heads mistake the i> mpor ol the
people if they think they < an dc-
tiact from Maj. ITnou's superim
lit ness lor t he senate hy uniting
their hags o( gall and dc-ing an
innocent public " ith them.
Those who have boa id Majoi ,
Hm on’s speeches for the last three |
weeks sov ,|,ut no other ir-.n in
(Icorgia possesses a hryadergrasp
of public questions-. Me softYis to
thoroughly understand American
institutions and is a lover of
them. He sees, with the keen
eye of a ■stat'esnian, the evils that
beset us, and ventures, with com
mendable patriotism., to create a
sentiment, which will re-olt in
I lie correction of them. On the
financial question he is outspoken,
yet reasonable and conservative,
oecupymg a position to unite the
factions In the demooratic party.
We believe it will require a.
great deal of trickery to defeat
Major Huron for the senate,—

several counties in this valley arc
so destitute that the riiiliomls arc
