“The tangle of the tickets in the
political unpleasantness uiidonlit-
olly drove some men to suicide
and others.to the insane-asylum.
There has come to ho too much
politics. The number and ar-
lamroment of the tickets, the
methods iif voting, and the red
tape in general of a very simple
thing, tiro confusing and unsatis
factory ; and there is no more
honest voting now than there
was under t he old system. One
doesn’t like to contemplate the
ousting of a hallift as he would
the sawing of a cord of wood."
'Vo commend the above to
those of our own General Assem
bly who are favoring the Austra
lian system.

simpler methods.
THE JUbICIAL ERMINE.
Tho biennial criticism of the
present method of electing Judg

tho rounds of our '.exchanges—
especially those who were disap
pointed as to the “getting there”
oi some favorite candidate; and
we read a great, many forcible
phrases about “dragging the ju
dicial ormino” i„ the dust, mud,
slime, etc.
Ho are well awaro that the
system is open to criticism and
that abuses do and will creep in,

nemo ol the lii'Hhren are exer
cising, wonderful fertile imagina
tions in the way rtf story tolling
of late. Wo give space for the
following little episode, because
we know the witnesses who were
our informants, are the very soul
of truth: In n back-woods dis
trict of one of our mountain coun
tie# there came from somewhere—
no one over knew—a >onng man,
lithe of limb nnd quick of eye,
who settled on a small clearing.
He had many peculiarities, and
was regarded with fear almost,
by his mountaineer neighbors.
Among his many idiosyncrasies
was his fondness for reptiles, nnd
ho possessed that wonderful pow
er of handling tho most deadly
of them without harm to himself.
VVlmt influence ho wielded over
tho scaly writhing things
was never known, but of the half
score of deadly poisonous reptiles
that were his daily companions
•u tho mountain paths, every one
seemed to understand perfectly
tho wish of its master. He never
spoke to them, but by a slight
motion of tho fingers or pass of
the hand, lie fixed tho attention
of this or that one, nnd eyeing
its master closely the snake pro
eroded to perform his will.
Ho could put his pels, or “com
panions'’ as ho called thorn
through all sorts of evolutions for
the entertainment of any neigh
bor who happened to pass his re
mote cabin and stop to inquire
about him, which was indeed a
raro, occurrence. Without
word they would come wriggling
up to where their master stood,
with a rustling shuffling noise,
and nslio willcdfcueh would quick
ly coil, sing, and give the dead
ly spring at some fancied object;
oi one would climb up into his.coat
pocket, another in tho bosom of
his open shirt, or still another
■would vest, itself in nd'cctiomita
folds around its masters neck.
Truly lie was a serpent king, nnd
knew not himself by wlmt force
or power ho controlled thesedond-
ly poisonous, loathusomo creat
ures. lie only “willed" ho said,
and they obeyed.
And so ho lived for several
years, until one dav while sitting
in bin own yard, fondling and
playing with bis pots, a brawny
.young bully of the neighborhood
walked up, and singling out
of tho snakes dealt it a blow with
a heavy stick stunning, but not
killing it. “You are a dirty
coward!” Almost hissed the
snaki charmer, r,s lie bent over
the wounded snake to examine it.
“I5y the devil, I’ll finish it, and
you too, you snakodovil" exclaim
ed tho bully, and raised his stick
for a blow at tho snake-charmer
Hut before ho could strike, there
was a sound like the rush of wa
ter, Hilda ringing and singing like
a hundred electric bolls calling at
one tune, and ton pair of poison
ed fangs lmd fastened themselves
in tho body of tho brute bully.
Death was instantaneous; and tho
charmer like ono in a dream
walked away from the terrible
scene, straight into tho heart of
tho mountain followed by his
