Atlanta, March 25.
Hon R. T. Nesbitt, Commissioner ol
of Agriculture:
I)KaK Hih—At your request, i vi.dted
tho lumberwood of Messrs. O’Neal &
Gross, at l'onia, Dooly county, Ga., on
tho nineteenth to investigate a disease
among their work oxen. Fivo were
dead and buried when I arrived and
four sick in tho lot in Ponia. We went
out on a tram car four miles in the
Woods, where tho oxen worked. The
oversoOr reported about ”0 more sick.
From a hasty examination 1 was satis
fied that there was an epidemic that
would go through tho entire herd and
I. advised them to be sent into Penia,
where they could bo put under proper
treatment. The following morning I
went throngh the entire herd raid found
uli affected. I took tho temperature of
ouch one, many going as high as 10H
and m:: 1.
Thediseaso is a well defined epidemic
of red water (hauuew aibominvoria),
character!z d by emissions of red color
ed urine; the di -charges from tho bow
els were tinged wirh blood and mu
cous; the pulse was quick and breath
ing horrible.
The causes of this outbreak, I think,
are duo to impure water from u well
the oxell were watered from. Owing to
the low flat situation the surface water
from the lot was washed into It.
I consul**!- the epidemic a mild form
that readily responded to treatin' nt
which we gave fir.-.t by purgativ* s, fol
