The government hirelings are
doing unmet hing every day to
wreck the Democratic pavty.
'I’he other day in Iowa they capt
ured Hie State Convention and
declared for the gold standard.
The most prominent Democrat*
in Hie State repudiate the work
of the Convention, and one of
them truthfully says that “there
is no difl'ereiice today between
Hie Cleveland faction nnd the
Republican party.” Ilosnys that
there were 125Federal oiiieohold
ers in the Convention, holding
their placed by proxy bought
from other people. The whole
mitehinen of tho government is
1 ding used to oppress and defeat
ii free people hut it will not. suc
ceed.
Missouri, Mississippi and
Texas have declared for the free
coinage of silver, and Joe lilaek-
hurn is winning in the Kentucky
(‘lections. This looks like the
South is for the gold standard,
doesn’t it? If Blackburn wins in
Kentucky it " ill prove that the
Convention held there a few
months ago was a gathering of
oflice-holders and not of the peo
ple.
The Atlanta Constitution is
right when it says that if it should
come to that point, silver mono
metallism is preferable to a sin
gle gold standard. Silver is the
money of the people an 1 gold of
the Sh.vloeks. Anything raHier
than Knglish domination, even if
it is a currency of pig tail-.
It is given out that the bond
syndicate will again har e to pro
tect the Treasure gold icserve.
AVe would like to know the use
of electing officers of the I'nited
States ii they are not able to pro
tect the government. What are
Cleveland and Carlisle for? AVe
might as well turn the govern
ment over in F.mdush and Amer
ican hankers and all of us put
win solve- under their protection.

Mrs. John Bryant, of Halier-

There has boon a ) minified

The Anti-Barroom Bill.
Kdilor of The Progress: This
bill was introduced in the House,
at the last session of the
Legislature, by the Hon. .1 A.
Bush, and in the Senate gy the
lion. M. G. Boyd, and vvdl come
up for final action at the next
session ul the Legislature. It has
become the center of folia fill agila- I from time fl
lion. It is said to lie the rallying' Rout( -. No
point of the temperance senti- j *H ,< |-'*t* “!»/• ■
ment of the Stale. This hill, if it |
becomes a law, will complete the
work of prohibition in Georgia.
AA’e wish every good and intelli
gent citizen of the State could se<
Hie necessity of this bill becoming
law. If llm. A. J. Hughes,
of Lexington, Georgia, ho cor
rect, “it will stop nil government
distilleries and breweries, and
close nearly a thousand saloons,
It will slop the waste of lot,000
bushels nf grain every* year, and
ifiKPAv iff save flic State of Georgia
♦5,000,000 the lirst year and in a
few years will save to Hje people
of the State *8,000,000, annually.
Will save thousands of families
from penury and want. Removing
temptation it will prevent more
sorrow and save mure souls than
any and every thing else possible
to human instrumentality.”
'I’he liquor traffic is imposing
great burdens upon society and
especially upon the poorer classes.
That being true it ought to be put
down. It is making millions of
E lpers in America but does not
o care of them. They arc
turned out to the State and Chris
tinn charity. Tho honest, the
sober and virtuous have the hill
to pay. Herein the little peacea
ble county of While, these tin
ders in iniquity increase our
burdens and multiply our woes.
We believe that nearly uino-
tenths of the crimes of the county
and the Slate are traceable to
whiskey, yet weave asked to al
low these men to go on in their
work of multiplying drunkards
and orphans and pauperism and
starvation and crime. Brother
ministers and all good Christian
people of Georgia, can v on look
God in the face and allow it?
Can it lie that those are ministers
or Christian men who have not
studied this subject and who are
so untrue that they are like the
Indian’s pole, so straight up that
they lean tho other way, and hav e
arranged themselves with those
who are rallying round the black
rum or whiskey?
Let every preacher and Chris
tian and good citizen u-e all his
influence to induce tho Legisla
ture that in the name of God and
humanity they remove, from the
State the worst enemy that re
ligion and tho Stale ever had.
Let us do all we can to till peti
tions with names that by the lirst
of October vv e may have the grand- j
esi petition for the grandest cause
ever seen in Georgia. If friends
will rally all along the line for
sixty dais we iii.-iv win tliegrand-
