'Democratic Mass Meeting
On Tuesday the Democrats of

Was decided not to nominate

crats made only one nomination
—Col. Oakes for representative
He was nominated unanimously,
’receiving 57 votes.
After the balloting Col. J. M.
Bishop, of Dawson vi lie, Demo
cratic nominee for the State sen
ate from this district, was intro
duced by Judge Kitnscy and spoke
for a short while, lie gave an ae-
•oount of his own nomination and
that of his Populist opponent—
Mr. J. F. Castleberry. Col. Bish
op said that Air. Castleberry had
taken active pail in the Democrat
5c nomination and a few weeks af
terward accepted the Populist
nomination for the senatorsliip.
That this could he easily proven
by two hundred witnesses in Daw
son county. Air. Cnstlebeiry is
evidently a turn-coat. Col. Bish
op is a staunch freo silver Demo
crat, and stands squarely upon
the platform recently adopted at
Chicago. He is a clever, high-
toned gentleman who has the in
terest of the laboring people at
heart, and would represent our
district creditably and efficiently.
Ho will receive handsome majori
ties in Dawson and Lumpkin and
if White looks well to her inter
ests she will give him a majority.
The colonel’s election is assured.
Col. Bishop was followed by
lion. Carter Tate. Air. Tate stat
ed that ho would not enter into a
lengthy discussion of the issues
before the people, but would re
turn in October, during court
week, and discuss fully pending
questions, llis address was brief,
and n goodly portion of it was di
rected to the Populist brethren.
Ho demonstrated to them that
Air. Winn had practically indor-
ed him(Tato)bv indorsing Bryan,
for Tate and Bryan have like rec
ords. Air. 'fate said ho could not
believe the Populists wore sincere
in opposing him. Air. Tate is a
popular man, and will roll up a
handsome majority for Democracy

“If our people will devote more
time to the cultivation of tho soil
