A 1,1 v. Tarantula.
A tarantula is something of a curiosity
in most sections of the United States,
and especially is this the case when tho
poisonoug little nnimul happens to bo
imported from Brazil. Such an animal
was found at the wholesale house of
Church, Anderson & Co., Jacksonville,
Fla.., but fortunately it did not have an
opportunity to bite anybody before be
ing killed. A sack of coffee was being
shipped away, when the colored porter,
saw a black spidery-looking animal
crawl out of a hole in the saok, and
make a jump at him, lie jumped back
ward, and picking up a stick, «oon bad
the tarantula lying on the top of a bar
rel, cold and lifeless. The tarantula was
about three inches in diameter, and
was a vory ugly-looking specimen of
the spider family. A number of people
stopped into the store to see the animal.
The firm had tbo coffee in stock about
three weeks, getting it from New York.
It was originally shipped from RioJan-

Sarsaparilla
Sense.
Any sarsaparilla is sarsapa
rilla. True. So any tea is tea.
So any flour is flour. But grades
differ. You want the best. It’s
so with sarsaparilla. There are
grades. You want the best. If
you understood sarsaparilla as
well as you do tea and flour it
would be easy to determine.
But you don’t. How should
you? When you are going to
buy a commodity whose value
you don’t know, you pick out
an old established house to
trade with, and trust their ex
perience and reputation. Do so
when buying sarsaparilla.
Ayer’s Sarsaparilla has been
on tlie market 50 years. Your
grandfather used Ayer’s. It is
a reputable medicine. There
are many Sarsapnrlllae—
hut only one Ayer's. It
cures.

Fox passed there after a passage of fifty-
five days from Now York. The two oc

from the effects of their long row. The
masters of the Norwegian barks Sito
and Fugen, both of whom spoke the
Fox at sea, examined the boat when they
spoke her and gave certificates that, oars
were the only propelling power used.

six weeks ago tho boy was bitten on tbe
wrist and ankle by a cat as he was walk

grow restless. At midnight he asked to
be strapped to the bed as he felt that he
was going mad. Ho frothed at the
mouth aud was in convulsions the
the remainder of the night and died the
next morning.
Nervous debility is a common com
plaint, especially among women. Tbe
best medical treatment for this disorder
is a persistent coursa of Ayer’s Sarsupa

This being accomplished nature will do
the rest.
Stmt In by • Big Fire.
Tho boiler room and buildings of tbe
Gardner Wilmiugton Coal company, at
Clarke City, Ills , were totally destroyed
by fire last week.
Tbe fire started in the roof of the boiler
room around the smoko Btack. The
mine was working full force. By des
truction of the machinery and hoisting
apparatus 300 miners were entqmbed
500 feet in tho earth.
The miners were placed in tho gravest
peril by the shutting off of the supply of
air. For a Bhort time there wus groat
excitement in tho villuge among the
friends and relatives of the imprisoned
men. As soon as the fire had completed
its work the miners escaped by climbing
long laddors in the air shaft.
All of the men escaped without injury
and none the worse for their experience.

For kicking, tie the horse’s hind foot
to his under jaw and make him kick.
If he then kicks with his loose toot, tie
both feet to his jaw and make him kick.
Three or four kicks will oure him.
For colic: Equal parts of laudanum,
chloroform and tincture assafuetlda;three
or four ounces for a horse, teaspoonful
for a man. Keep tightly stopped, shake
well when going to use.
If the meal barrel has from long use
become musty, pour a little sulphur on
a piece of old pot or on the ground and
set It on fire. Turn your barrel bottom
up over this and smoke it well. It will
no longer be musty.
For foot evil whioh causes the boof to
shed, take two parts of vertigris and
one part calomel, mix with lard or oil
to make a salve. With a flat stick rub
well in at lop of hoof. Repeat every
two days. In a week the humor will be
killed and tbe hoof will not shed.
To waterproof osnaburgs, take one
and a half pounds alum and one and a
half pounds sugar of lead, dissolve in
separate vessels, put your doth in a tub
and pour this fixture over it. Bet it
stand twenty-four hours, then dry with
out wringing. This quantity is sufficient
for ten gallons of water.
Saturate some sawdust with carbonio
add and sprinkle it along the rows of
cabbage when very small, and tbe flea
bug will leave in u hurry. Neither will
the common flea stay where it smells
carbonio acid.
If your horse slips his bridle, put
bits to a halter and use It for a bridle.
If he pulls back and breaks the tie rein,
tie a rope around his neok, pass it
through the ring of the bridle bit, then
back through where it goes round his
ncok and tic with this. After using
this a week, he will be cured of this
habit.
Being satisfied there were bugs in the
bedstead, a sheet was spread on the

dead or dying, lying on the sheet. The

Mrs. Julia A. Brown, of Covington, Tenn.,

are best described by hersolf, as follows:
For 18 years I suffered from nervousness

Dr. Miles’ Restorative Nervine,
I was then unablo to get to Bleep until

after taking ouo-half bottle of the Nervine
I could sleep all night just as well a* I ever

When the nests arc where the dog can
run before and around them, either the
dog, the nests or the laying hens are
out of place. Baying hens need to be
kept quiet.
Thousands upon thousands of ducks
are raised every year without more
water than is necessary for their drink.
Young ducks are less liable lo disease
when raised in warm, dry quarters than
when allowed to run at large and spend
much of their time in the water. A
good way is to set the eggs under hens.
Hens one to three years old are the
best breeders. The eggs of pullets are
often infertile under the most favorable
conditions.
It may not be generally known that all
kinds of feathers are salable. The de
mand is increasing, and most country
merchants will take them and sell them
upon commission. The fowls must be
pioked dry, and the feathers kept e'eau
and'in good condition. Keep separate
the coarser ones, as well as those of dif
ferent kinds of fowls.

Little Things Worth Knowing.
For an eating sore, use carbolic salve.
It will kill the virus.
To fatten poultry, feed them on one
part charcoal and two parts meal.
For mending marble, dissolve gum
arable and thicken with plaster of Paris.
If cutworms trouble your cabbage
plants, sprinkle a little salt along the
row.
Cloride of soda will instantly remove
stains, but must not be allowed to get on
colored goods.
If wiggle tails get in your cistern or
well, put three or four Tittle fish in and
the wigglers will quickly disappear.
Stick a cob in a hill of your melons or
squashes and pour some kerosene on it
aud the melon bug will keep at a dis
tance.

one part pumice stone, one part fine
ohalk. Mix with water and apply—apply

Ohicken Cholera.
One of the latest cures for chicken
cholera Is hyposulphite of 8od&, gven In
doses of half a level teaspeonful of the
or.vstals in as much water as will dissolve
it. We hope our friends will give the
remedy a trial, as it is highly recom
mended, and we should be glad to hear
from all who use it. Hyposulphite of
soda should not be oonfounded with sul
phlte of soda. Sulphite of soda is the
union of sulphurous aoid and soda. Sul-
pliurio aoid is oil of vitriol and is distinct
from sulphurous acid which oontalns
less oxygen.
Ilyposulphurous acid is made by dis
solving pure sulphur in a solution of sul
phite of soda, the first containing twice
as much as the latter. Pure sulphur
will not dissolve in water, but will dis
solve in a solution of sulphite of soda or
ourbon bisulphide. Sulphur fumes will
instantly destroy the germs of all oonta-
gious diseases, and we believe that It is
by the breaking up of tho hyposulphite
of soda in the system that the sulphur
ous aoid, sulphur and soda, kills the dis
ease. We certainly feel gratified to hear
of a cure, but will feel more assured if
we oan hear of good results from our
readers who may be pursuaded to try
the remedy.—Prairie Farmer.
Flowen Three Thousand Years Old.
The oldest herbarium in the world is
that of the museum of Egyptology, at
Cairo. The Bondon Telegraph's special
correspondent says of it:
‘‘The flowers are in crowns and gar
lands from the ancient Egyptian tombs,
and most of them are preserved in ex
cellent condition. This is certainly sur
prising, since most of this sarcophagi
dated back twenty-five centuries B. C.
None of tbe flowers in this collection
can be less than three thousand years
old, while the oldest oolleotion of flowers
and herbs in Europe is hardly four hun
dred years old.
"Among the plants of the Cairo col
lection are found blue and white lotus
flowers, red poppy blossoms, the oriental
larkspur, the hollyhock, several species
of chrysanthemums, the pomegranate,
leaves from the willow and oelery, and
several other species of flowers, of which
we also hear in the Grioco-Roman
period."

Poultry Notes,

A well hen, if not loo fat, is full of

Neither poultry nor babies can stand

When the bird begins to wheeze, you

Use plenty of dry earth or sifted coal
