Southern Statesmanship—The
Reul Reason.*
Tbe editor of an Episcopal paper
published at Baltimore, whose glowing
pen is handled with signal force and
skill, has a recent article on the wick
edness and impolicy of excluding the
statesmen of the South from the
councils of the nation ; He says:
“If the world, as we have said, does
not exhibit as rapid a rise in progress
as America presented under Southern
counsels, neither can it suppress the
sudden and profound descent which
has been made since Southern men
were driven off by the aggressive
means of Radicalism, and kept out by
its continued triumph. There is not a
material or political interest of the
country which has not deteriorated in
Radical hands.
The change in our condition is as
great as from the genial temperature
of summer to the freezing atmosphere
of mid winter. In nothing have we
progressed under Radical ride save in
the wholesale increase of debt, national
and State, and in taxation unequalled
iin any part of the world, and h an
amount of official corruption which
h L <s never been surpassed from the
earnest history of mankind. Yet jn
the faC*e of these facts Radicalism per
sists in ostracising and excluding from
the nation*! councils the statesmen of
that section which has heretofore fur

Roman in its integrity and power, and
on the very spot where the Southern
giants once stoed, we now see,
representatives of the South, narrow
browed, stunted, evil-eyed adventurers
and scalawags, who look like the im
penitent thief. And this at a juncture
when the country needs, more than
ever » its best statesmanship. The
South doep not ask to cqptrol this
country; but as its future fate is bound
up with the rest, to have some voice
in its control and in the general
guidance. Is not this a reasonable
request ?

Cheering Facts for the Billions*
Every day demonstrates more clearly that
liver complaint, in all its distressing forms,
can be controlled and cured without difii
culty or inconvenience. It is is an obsti
nate disease, but its obstinacy is not proof
against the pertinacious, remedial and re
storative operation-of Hostetler’s Stomach
Bitters. That genial corrective compels the
organ to do its duty. It must secret regularly
and healthfully under the influence of the
Bitters. Their action brings it back from
a state of rebellion into perfect harmony
with the laws of htalth. If their is costive
ness, it disappears ; if there is side-ache or
back-ache, it ceases; if the skin and the
whites of the eyes are tinged with superflu
ous bile, they recover their natural hue ; if
the appetite is-gone, it returns; if the di
gestion is impaired, it is restored ; in brief,
whatever the symptoms of tho complaint
may be, and whatever the phase it has
assumed, a cure is certain Such are the
uniform effects of this preparation where
billious disease has been already developed;
but in cases where there is merely a con
stitutional tendency to liver complaint, it
may be prevented throughout life by the
regular use, in small quantities of this
palatable antidote. These are proven facts,
and should be seriously poudered-r-or rather
they should be promptly acted upon—by all
persons of billious habit.

Tuscaloosa, Ai.a.. )
December 32d,*870. f
Col. IF. D. Jfann:
Sir.—Your Circular of the Is; inst. came to
hand. As we found the Langdon Fertilizer the
best that we tried, I give you mv experience
with it. Our land is poor, red hill land. Used
200 lbs. to the acre. We used one ton of Glllam’s,
at $75; three tons of Zell's, at $53 per ton; two
tons of the Longdon. at SOO per ton. The land
wag all worked alike, and the some quantity
used of each. I did not keep the weights of each
Held separate, but attended to the picking anil
weighing myself, and khowthat there was more
cotton gathered to the acre on the Langdon than
any other part of t lie place, The Zell’s was next.
From my own experience, and in the opinion of
all farmers, who toox notice of it, the Langdon
Fertilizer was far superior to any that we used.
Respectfully yours, fees,

cheapness—l am fully convinced that, at the
price now fixed l»y you, to-wit: $55 per ton, it
is much the cheapest Fertilizer in our market.
Pound for pound, I consider it more valuable
than the preparations that are Selling at $75 to
SBO. For my own w, I would greatly prefer it
to Peruvian Guano at the same price.” Os its
merits, he says: "The result is the best Fertil
izer in the world for our Southern lands, in my
opinion. w
Again: “It contains more fully and complete
ly than any other, the elements neceessary for
the production of Southern crops and the reno
vation of Southern soil.
Prof. Charles u. Shepard, Jr., M. D., Professor
of Chemistry South Carolina Medical College,
and fyfpeefor of Fertilizers tyr South Carolina,
who made a full and careful analysis of the
Langdon Fertilizer, says of it: “It is a very su
perior article.”
