Avery convenient but rudely construct ed Chapel for pteuching purposes, has been erected at Gillums’ Limestone Spring, by the good people of that neighborhood, who have itching ears for the Gospel of Christ A flourishing Sabbath School has already been organized at that place. Let ministers of the gospel notice this fact. While in Atlanta, on Friday last, we were shown a Masonic Badge, made of solid gold, And engraven beautifully, by Messrs, Sharpe & Floyd, Jewellers, &c., for Mr. Pease, of the Empire Restaurant of that city. We saw another one—a sac simile, except the latter was hallow, manufactured in N. \ ork. Ihe former was as handsome as the latter, and sold at the same price—one solid and the other hollow—one made at home and the other abroad. In buying which would you prefer ? The solid, of course ! These gentlemen assured us that this differ ence was not alone confined to badges, but run through the entire catalogue of goods sold by them, consisting, in part, of Sterling f "ul Plated Wares, Jewelry, Watches and blocks, Diamonds, Spectacles, Cutlery, P’onzed Statuary, Ladies’ Work and Mu «ic Boxes, and many other things too nu merous to mention, of which they have, not only a mammoth, but very fine stock. They Also manufacture and engrave any kind of gold jewelry to order. See their advertise ment in another column of this paper. Tub Atlanta Sun makes a vain attempt to ridicule the stone image found on Col. Turn- Jin’s plantation, and noticed in a previous issue of this paper. It heads its article, as follows : “The Cartersville Idol—Let us fall down and Worship.” We are not at all sur prised at the Sun man for wishing to “fall down and worship” this idol, for it is char acteristic of his sort. Bill Tumlin, of Cuthbert, Ga., was in town yesterday, looking well and hearty, and i3 as jovial as ever. Tiik farmers of this section pay laborers from 10 to 12 dollars per month. Wc frequently meet with gentlemen who reside in other states, who visit our town and county for the purpose of purchasing land or embarking in some kind of business. This speaks volumes in favor of our beauti ful Cherokee Georgia, and our people should be careful not to turn the cold should er to these strangers seeking homes in our midst; sell them land as cheaply as you can, and welcome them in our midst, and by so doing, increase the tide of immigra tion, and ere long, we may truthfully term our section the Garden spot of Georgia, and with the poet, exclaim; “The Land that we live in—tlie land that we live in Oh! where is the heart does not think it more fair Than the brightest of scenes to which nature has given Iler clearest of sun and her purest of air?” Just received at Satterfield, Py ron & Co’s., Full Line Ladies’ Dress Trimmings, Laces, Edgings, Inserting, Fringes, Ribbons, &c. Line Lawns, Percales, Swiss and Nainsook Muslin, Bishop and Victoria Lawns, which they are offering at Extremely Low Figures. Thk Sabbath School Pic Nic which was to have come off on Friday next, baa been postponed until Friday the 2d of June, in order to make necessary preparations. It will be remembered that the Dalton Sab bath Schools will be present on that occa sion. We again offer an apology for the scarci ty of local items; the fact is there are none in this berg. We learn from a gentleman who was present, that the Sunday Schools of Cass villc had a pic-nic, Saturday last, in that place. It was a deligtful occasion, and who were present pronounce it a success.— Dr. W. H. Felton delivered the address, which was well-timed, instructive, enter taining and charmingly eloquent. Igk, Fine assortment of Gents Dress Shirts, Fancy Shirts, Collars and Cuffs just opened by Satterfield, Pyron & Cos. Wk greatly regret that our business was such as of necessity, deprived us of the pleasure of attending the party and supper* given by the “Hermesian Debating and So cial Association,” at tlie Female Academy, on Thursday night of last week. From par ties who were in attendance, we are inform ed that it was a brilliant success, and entertaining in the highest. The ladies and gentlemen who presided over the culinary department were fully adequate to the task, for in this line nothing was omitted. The evening was most pleasantly passed in promenading, playing and social conversa tion, in fact all were gay and festive, and everything went as “merry as a marriage bell.” The young men who compose this Society deserve great credit for the very nice manner in which the whole affair was conducted. We wish them great success and speed in the ascension of the moumt of knowledge, and that in after years, they may look back upon the time when they were members of the “Hermesian Society,” with no small degree of pride, and fully realize the great benefits which they derived from having had their names enrolled on its list of membership, aad if they will con tinue to apply themselves as at present, the time will surely come, wben they will see and knew, and properly appreciate tire many useful things they learned while members of the debating society at Carters ville. Long wave the members of the Her mesian Society. Wa are requested by the members of the Society to return their sincere thanks to Col. R. A. Crawford for his liberal dona tion towards the supper. A short trip into the country on Sat urday, satisfies us more than ever, that the wheat crop is a decided failure. Whatever the cause, not more than half a crop can be raised if everything in the future, until the harvest comes, shall be of the most favorable character. We do not believe it will reach that amount. On some of the best lands in the country there is almost a total failure.— The corn crop, however, is most promising, while the oats were never better. Much of the cotlou planted has died since coming up, and is still dying. We do not know that the last fact is to be materially regretted; and it may prove a blessing in disguise.— At all events, the breadth of land in wheat, corn and oats, promises ‘-bread for the eater and seed for the sower,” and as our people are not much in debt, we can, perhaps, postpone a money crop, for the future with' out much serious inconvenience, and thank fully uiing the mercies of the present, await with hopeful confidence. The rain, and fly, and rust, have damaged our farming inter ests materially, it is true, but our people, as a whole, in North Georgia, are in better condition than any other portion of the State, and amidst all our lo*se.< by ‘-field and flood,” have ample cause for gratitude.— Provisions ,are abundant and cheap; prop erty of all kinds bears a good price, and is in demand; mon<-y, we know, is a little scarce, and trade, with the merchants, r über du'l, but the farmer is at work, and the people economical, and we have no doubt, with the blessing of Providence, but that the year, upon the whole, will, at its close, see us still nearer the prosperity of ante helium times than ever before. Grover and Baker Sewing Machine THIS celebrated Sewing Machine has been in us* for nearly twenty rears, and is now us ed by over three hundred thousand families, and hais gained a reputation far above anv oth er sewing Machine. It Las been awarded more national prizes than any other machine in the world; at the Great World's Fair at New York, it was awarded the Gold Modal; at the Condon Fair it won the very highest prize, and in 1867, at Paris, it was awarded the Cross of the Legion of Honor; besides this, it has won the First Premium at all the State Fairs where it has been exhibited. However, we do not claim that premiums won at our State and Countv Fairs any great honor or mark of distinction, as it depends more on the operator than the machine, they seldom have judges who are mechanics, and judges of a Sewing Machine. At National Fairs there are a sworn Committee, who are judges of machinery. The following are some ot the reasons why the Grover & Baker is the best: It is the lightest running Machine in use; it is the it is more rapid in its movements; sews directly troni two s(tools without rewind ing; sews all kinds of work without (misting, can do twice ast ninch work in a dav as anv other machine; it is the most durable, and almost hoiseless; it sews equally well on all kinds of goods, from the finest Swiss muslin to the heaviest Beaver cloth; makes the elastic loek-stiteh much the strongest in use, and every machine is fully warranted. Who can desire any more in a sewing machine. There is every variety and size of these machines, from the lightest family to the heaviest leather machine. These machines are now for sale at Cartersville. ,Ga., livLeon A CAMP, in otic of Judge Parrott's new (store Houses, under the City hall. Ma chines will be delivered to customers either in or oat of the city, and full instructions given free of charge; and should any of our machines fall short of our recommendation, the monev will be cheerfully refunded or placed in its stead any other machine in use.
