be found in another ooluinn. The next sea
son of this young but fteufisltias institu
tion of learning will b# opened oaAhi 19 th
instant, Mr. James U. Vincent, Principal,,
I# a youn£ man of rare qualifications as an
instructor of til# young. Possessed of an
amiable disposition, open expression of
countenance, kind heart, genteel manners,
of unquestionable moral character, highest
type of literary attainments, and, as a des
ciplinarian, tender and gentle yet’ firm and
decided ; hi# school jffs also backed up by a
corps es assistant teachers worthy of the
Principal, a majority of whom, together
with the Principal, were formerly citizens
of this county; which fact commends the
school to the patronage of Bartow county
deople.
Camming, the locality of the school, is in
Forsyth couuty, and is a very desirable
place for such an institution. High, dry,
ami healthy# the student breathes a pure
afmoiphere, and drinks good w .tcr; free
from excitements and corrupt associations;
no occasion for gaudy raiment or costly ap
parel to divert the minds of students; society
refined jet unaffected; board almost nomi
nal as to price and best as to quality. In
fact, the whole community are interested in
building up this school, And the result is no
stone is left unturned, by the citizens of
that village, that will add attractions to the
school or comfort to the student. With 'such
a corps of instructors in such a community,
the school is necessarily a success.
Union Sabbath School Pic-Nic,
»t this place, on Friday last, passed off very
pleasantly, notwithstanding the extreme
heat of the weather, and disappointment in
not being honored with the presence of the
invited schools of Marietta, Ac worth, Cal
houn, and Dalton, and the schools generally
of this county. Owing to the lack of trans
portation on the State Road, and the very
great press of labor among our farmers, the
three Sabbath Schools at this place and one
from StilcsbofO, together with a few visit
ors and citizens of the county, were com
pelled to forego the pleasure of meeting so
groat a number as was anticipated on the
occasion, and had to divide their hospitali
ties, and share their friendly greetings,
with the comparatively small number pres
ent, which was ample for the crowd and no
little to spare. Good cheer and smiling
faces marked the leading features* of the
day. At the appointed hour tho three
schools of this place met at the Methodist
Church, were arranged in procession, and,
under the direction of the prince of sabbath
school superintendents, Mr. John A. Erwin,
were marched to the Depot, and were there
joined by the sabbath Bchool of Stilesbore,
under the direction of Mr. Irby G. Hudson,
ahd the procession were then marched to
the beautiful grove in the fork of the Row
land and Doutlutt’s Ferry Roads, where
a stand and seats had been arranged. The
exercises of the hour were opened with a
welcoming address by Mr. Judson Attaway,
which was chase, spirited, and well deliver
ed, especially for one so young and unac-
eustomed to public speaking. The first or
ator of the day introduced was Rev. Win
A. Milner, who also addressed the audience
in a pointed and forcible manner fora short
time. The speaker is the eldest sod of the
late lamented ltev. Richard A. Milner, the
first pastor of tho Presbyterian Church in
this place, whose remains now sleep in the
valley of the Etowah—a man universally
loved and esteemed—upon the shoulders of
this son has fallen the mantle of the father.
He is just out college, and, having his feet
Bhod with the preparation of the gospel of
peace, now enters fully upon his labor of
love in his master's vineyard. The second
and last orator introduced was the Rev. R.
B. Ileaden, pastor of tho Baptist Church in
this place, who, with hat in hand, ascended
the stand, and addressed himself to the
children, in a pathetic and simple style,
thereby eliciting their undivided attention.
He is also a young man cf much promise,
a Bartow county boy, raiged in Cassville,
and educated at the Cherokee Baptist Col
lege. With a well ballanced mind and vig
orous intellect, coupled with studious hab
its, he bids fair to make a minister worthy
of the great and powerful denomination
wliioh he now stably represents The ex
ercises were Iwerspersed with beautiful
sabbath school songs by the schools. The
speaking over, the tables were spread, and
all hands engaged in discussing the merits
of the rich viands so temptingly set before
them, aftet which they felt at liberty to
roam over the grounds singly, in couples,
■or in parties as to them seemed best ; or
indulge in innocent amusements, sweet con
verse, or silent glances. A number of the
belles and beaux, not wishing to confine
their rovings to such circumscribed limits
as the picnic grounds, indulged in a buggy
ride to Rowland Springs. Nothing, at all,
transpired during the day to mar the peace
and enjoyment of any one, as far as we could
learn. Messrs. Pattiilo & Baker were early
on the ground with their elegant Soda Foun
tain, dispensing their cooling and invigora*
ting beverage to the thirsty ones who huug
around its exhilerating waters. The thing
tnost peceptibly m ; s sed, was the mellodiou
and 'rains of the Cornet Brass Band, which
)’ previous arrangement, were filling an
engagement at Pine Log and Sonora Acad
emy Exhibitions, an account of which will
be found in another column of this paper—
One after another dropped off, as the even
ing wore away, until there was nothing left
but the empty stand, vacant seats, and scat
'ered fragments, to rftmiW one of the pic
me and social reunion, in Cartersville, on
Friday, the 9th day of June, 1871.

Skd* On Wednesday morning l;ud f
accompanied by the Cartersville Brass
Bund, we took our departure for
’Possum Trot, to attend the Examina
tion and Exhibition of Pine Log Ma
sonic Institute. Our engineers, Shaw
and McCarson, notwithstanding the
inclemency of the weather and the
very bad condition of the road, land
ed us safely, and ou schedule time at
our journey’s end. Nothing of any
note transpired after our arrival, until
afternoon, save the Annual Address
delivered by Col. It. C. Saxon, whiih
wusablo, eloquent and very interesting, ,
but we thought rather elaborate. The '
address concluded, the Band played a
piece of music, after which dinner was
announced, and the entire crowd re
paired to a beautiful grove a few rods
distant from the Academy, where they
found two long tublea laden with eve
rything in the culinary line that heart
could wish, of which they were invited
to partake. No rushing, pulling or
crowding to get to the tables, but on
the contrary, perfect order was main
tained, and the result was, that none
were slighted, and all had plenty.
During the whole of the forenoon
it rained almost incessantly’, and oven
at noon, dark, murky clouds which
were gathered overhead betokened
nothing but rain in the afternoon.—
But, to the great joy of all, about 1
o’clock, tho great King of Day% made
his debut, dispelling those ugly clouds
which, during the first part of the day,
Dad obscured his smiling face and shut
off Iris genial ard invigorating rays,
inspiring all with new life and energy.
After an hour’s recreation and rest,
the crowd were summoned to the
arbor by the notes of the Band, and
the exercises resumed, viz: the ex
amination of the students; and just
here we desire to remark, that we nev-
er saw pupils more rigidly examined,
or more perfectly and thoroughly un
derstand the studies over which they
had gone, and upon which they were
examined. The examination was got
ten through with by 5 o’clock, and a
recess of fifteen minutes given, at the
expiration of which time, the people
w ere assembled in hko manner as be
fore, and tbe time between that and
G o’clock, was occupied by the juvenile
exhibition, and the speeches of the
boys’ and the compositions of the girls
were all new, and quite interesting.—
Six o’clock having arrived, a dismissal
was granted until 7 o’clock, at which
hour the Senior Exhibition commenc
ed.
After supper, the hour for assem
bling having rolled round, the Baud
again gavo the signal by discoursing
a piece of music which rang out upon
the stilly night air, echoing and re
echoing over hill and dale, and finally
dying away on the gentle evening
zephyrs far away among the moun
tains, and then, for a short time, si
lence reigned supreme. The people
all having congregated, the exercises
were opened by a s lutatory speech
delivered by master Albert Weems f
who acquitted himself in a manner
highly creditable to himself and teach
er. Following the salutatory, were
many other speeches, compositions and
dialogues, all of which were interesting
iu the highest, and reflected great
credit upon instructors and students*
We very much regret that time and
space forbid us from giving, in detail,
a report of this Examination and Ex
hibition. Rev. J. M. Brittain, the ef
ficient and gentlemanly Instructor,
knows how to conduct exhibitions, and
examinations so as to prevent them
from becoming monotonous and tire
some. He is a ripe scholar, good
teacher, a Christian gentleman, and
enjoys the good will and respect of not
only his pupils, but of all who know
him.
In behalf of the Cartersville Brass
Band, we return our sincere thanks to
the whole-souled people of ’Possum
Trot generally, and especially to Mess.
Thompson, Gordon, Walker, Barton,
Shaw and McCarsou, for the very kind
and hospitable manner in which we
were entertained.
Long may the Pine Log Masonic
Institute flourish, and we hope to have
the pleasure of attending other Com
mencements at ’Possum Trot.
In our next issue, we will give our
readers a report of the Commencement
exercises at Sonora Institute, in Gor
don County, thither we went from
’Possum Trot.
Owing to the extreme scarcity
of local items, and the press of other
matter, we won't trouble our brain try
ing to manufacture any, for this paper.

The South Carolina Land and liu

portant Enterprise.
By Veference to tbe advertising columns of
thi# morning's Courier, it will be pereieved
that an important enterprise has just enter
ed upon its inception in Charleston. Gen
eral# M. U. Butler and M. W. Gary,.and our
fellow townsman, John Chadwick, Esq-,
have entered into an association for the pur
pose of facilitating and pronmtiug immigra
tion into our State. The importance of this
enterprise will at once be perceived, and it
will be equally apparent that in order to
make it a success, our people throughout the
State will have to lend their cordial assist-
ance te it. The Association proposes to es
tablish agencies in the principal cities of
Europe, and the North and Northwest, for
the purpose of inducing immigration, and
assisting such persons who may desire to
come to the State and become permanent
settlers upon the sotl. The land proprietors
throughout the State, to whom particularly
immigration is of the vastest importance, can
facilitate the association by offering their
surplus lands for sale on easy terms of cred
it. The Association proposes to negotiate
the purchase of such lands for immigrants,
and call# upon its friends to furnish it at
once with the information as to the amount
of land they may have to dispose of. The
names of the gentlemen who form the Asso
ciation are a sufficient guarantee of its reli
ability, and we commend the enterprise to
the support and encouragement of our citi
zens, with our best wishes for its success.

The * Tain Killer” may justly he staled
ihc great medicine of the world, for there ip
no region of the globe into which it has not
found its way, and been largely used and
highly prized. Moreover there is no clime
to which it has »ot proved be well adapted
for the cure of a considerable variety of dis
eases; it is a speedy and safe remedy for
burns, serious cuts, bruises, wounds and va
rious other injuries, as well as for dysente
ry, diarrhoea and bowel complaints general
ly, it is admirably suited for every race of
men on the face of the globe.
It is a very eignfieant fact, that notwith
standing the long period of years that tbe
“Pain Killer’ 1 has been before the world, it
has never lost o*he whit of its»popularity, and
at uo previous time has the demand for it
been so great, or the quantity made been so
large, as it is to-day.
Another significant fnfct is, that nhwhere
has the Pain Killer ever been in higher re
pute, or been more generally used by fami
lies and individuals, than it has been here
at home, where it was first discovered and
and introduced. That the Pain Killer will
continue to be, what we have styled it, thz
use at MKixcncit or thk woku>, there can
not be the shadow of a doubt.—Providence
Advertiser.
A Chap! cr of Facia.
Space is valuable in a newspaper, and it
is therefore proposed in this advertisement
to condense a variety of facta, important to
the public, into a small compass. Those
facts refer to Hoetetier’s Stomach Bitters—
what that celebrated medicine is and what
it will do, In the first plaee, then, the arti
cle is a stimulant, tonic and alterative, con
sisting of a combination of an absolutely
pure spirituous agent with the most valua
ble medicinal vegetable substances that Bot
anic research has placed at the disposal of
the chemist- and the physician. These in
gredients are compounded with great care,
ani in such proportions as to produce a pre„
p&ration which invigorates without exciting
the general system, and tones, regulates and
controls the stomach, the bowels, the liver,
and the minor secretive organs.
What this great restorative will do must
be gathered from what it has done. The
case of dyspepsia, or any other form of in
digestion, in which it has been persistently
administered without effecting a radical cure
is yet to be heard from, and the same may
be said of bilious disorders, intermittent fe
ver, nervous affections, general debility,
constipation, sick headache, mental disabili
ties, to which the feeble are so subject. It
purifies all the fluids of the body, including
the blood, and the gentle stimulus which it
imparts to the nervous system is not succeed
ed by the slightest reaction. . This is a chap
ter of facts which readers, for their own
sakes, should mark and remember.

Grover and Baker Sewing Machine
THIS celebrated Sewing Machine hns been it,
use for nearly twenty years, and i\nwW «i#-»
ed by over three hundred thousand faaußie*,-
and has gained a reputation far above any oth
er sewing Machine. It Las Imen awarded mere
national prize* than any Wuar machine in the
world; at the Great WorVlhiTaiwatt New York,
it was awarded the* GOttYModal; at the
Fair it won khe very highest prize, and in 1887,
at Paris, it was awarded the L ross of the Legion
of Honor; besides this, it has won the First
Premium at all the State Fairs where it has
been exhibited. However, we do net claim that
premiums won at o«r State and Oounty Fails
any groat honor or mark of distinction, as i;
depends more on the operator titan thc.machftisj
they seldom 2mve'lodge, whotiare ineehanie..
arid judges of a Sewing Machine. At Natienal
Fairs there are a sworn Committee, who are
judges of.machinery..< The following are some
of the reasons why-the Grover A Baker is the
best: -
It is the lightest running Machine in use; it is
the simplest; it is more rapid in its movement*;
sews directly from two spools without rewind-,
ing; sews all kinds of work without baiting,-
can do twice M much work in a day as any
other machine; it is the most durable, and
almost noiseless; it sews equally well on all
kinds of goods, from the finest Swiss runslin to
the heaviest Beaver cloth; makes the clastic
lock-stitch much the strongest in tise, andevciv
machine is fully warranted. Who can desire
any more in a sewing machine. There is every
variety and sine of these machines, from the
lightest family to the heaviest leather machine.
These machines are now for sale at Cartersville,
Oa, l>v Leon A CAMP, in one of Judge ParrwW's
new Store Houses, under the City hall. Ma
chines will be delivered to customers either in
or out of the city, and full instructions given
free of charge; and should any of our machines
fall short of our recommendation, the oion-*y
will be cheerfullv refunded or placed i» it*
stead any other machine in use. 6M Machines

shortest notice.
