r Xu?' liASfbw SurEUiOft Cornr, adjourned
term, convenes, in this place, on Monday
following the fifth Sunday in this month.—
Much business remain* ott, and lias been
udded to, the dockets of said court to be
tried at its approaching session. We un
derst nd that there are about twelve or
thirt een prisoners now in jail, awaiting their
trials. The new jail, whieli is now in pro
cess of erection, is to be an almost impreg
nible bastile. Thbre are to be twenty-four
cells in all, or twelve two-story cells, in the
ell part of the building, and all under one
roof. They occupy the middle of the long
room or ell, with a passage aU around them,
no that, if a prisoner were to break through
the strong walls of the cell, before escaping
he would then have to penetrate also the
walls of the building. The main or front
building is two stories high. The jailor oc
cupies.the first, and the second story is the
debtor’s room. The whole is to cost $13,-
600.00. Messrs. Chapman and Wallace are
the wood and brick contractors and build
ers. It will be, when completed, perhaps,
one amongst the safest jails in the State.
From the signs of work we sec going on
at the old Bartow Iron Furnace, just across
the river between Cartersville and Allatoo
na, that establishment will soon be in full
blast again. We learn that fifteen houses
for operatives, arc to be erected there be
tween now and the first of Novembor next,
in addition to the largo shed around the
furnace, at which time they expect to put
on the blast and commence work. A side
track on the W. <St A. R. K., near the furn
ace, has already been constructed. This is
one of the best and most conveniently loca
ted iron furnaces in the South. It is loca
ted in a few hundred yards of the railroad,
and upon an almost inexhaustable bed of
rich hemetitc iron ore, and surrounded with
mountains of it, upon which grows fine for
ests of wood for coaling purposes, and hard
by flow# an unfailing little water brook,
headed by ns fine a spring of cold mountain
water, as Cherokee Georgia affords. Why
Is it y that the old Etowah Rolling and Flour-
Hug-M-Us and Foundry property is perrnit
? ictl to lie idle, with its immense water pow
»er? Who can tell us? There stands the
stone walls of what was once a five story
merchant flouring mill, which could be re
paired at, perhaps, less than half the ex
penditure of money and labour that it would
require to build anew one, with the bed of
i the old Etowah Branch railroad running
i immediately by the door, so that the cars
imay be loaded and unloaded without even
the necessity of switching them off of one
;track on to another. Then there is build
ing material in abundance lying spontane
ously around, much of which is covered up
in the ruins of the old buildings. We
would begin to think that the good old days
•of yore were returning if we could only see
this valuable property being repaired and
rebuilt.
The Marietta District Meeting of the
Methodist E, Church South, will he held, at
Ac worth, commencing on Wednesday night
/before, and embracing the fifth Sunday in
this month. Ample arrangements are be
ing made, we learn, for furnishing homes to
delegates and visitors, during the four days
continuance of the meeting, by the good
people of that place and vicinity.
The showers of rain are very partial, in
this section. Rain lias fallen nearly all
around Cartersville, lately, but none in the
place. Wc are beginning to need it here,
and in some other portions of the county.
P. S.—Since penning the above the hea
vens have been propitious, in sending upon
this section refreshing showers, which tho’
light in town, were much heavier in the
surrounding country. But we entertain
strong hopes that all will bo blest with an
abundant season.
The ring of the trowel and the noise of
the hammer and saw, still afford satisfactory
evidence of the upward and onward tenden-'
cy of our town. Never before has the ma
nia for building been greater than at the
present.
The tall stalk of corn standing in front of
our printing office, the growth of Mr. J. W.
Shepherd’s Pettit’s creek farm, .measuring
16$ feet high, excited the comments of the
darkeys generally, who had come to town
last .Saturday, some avering that they could
beat it, and others contending that it couldn’t
be beat. We are very much of the latter’s
opinion. » *
W. 11. Stiles & Cos., are now running a
heavy iron business, having Pool’s and
Lewis & Jones’ furnaces, on stamp creek,
in this county, in full blast. Mr. J. E.
Meister, an iron man, is superintending the
work.
We learn that the hay crops of Oothcalo
ga Valley are exceedingly fine, this season.
H will be remembered that Adairsville is in
this lovely valley. We guess our old and
highly esteemed friends, John W. Gray, J.
leach, J. H. Fitten, A. C. Trimble,
aad Baylis W. Lewis, will be able to supply
the market with a large quantity of fine clo
’ct and grass hay. Corn in this valley is
f'&id to be very promising, and at last ac
counts was beginning to need rain.
Two kid gloves, of different colors, have
recently been picked up and left at this of
nee, which the owners can get by calling for
them.

A New Kink in Divorces.
A LAWYER LEARNS WISDOM FROM A PRET
TY WOMAN.
A short time since a talented young
lawyer of a neighboring city, whose
name is not Smith, and whose briefs
have been like angels’ visits, was de
lighted by finding in his office a richly
dressed lady, who announced her de
sire to employ him professionally.—
With a beautiful smile that could
hardly be restrained from bursting in
to a full blown laugh the young Black
stone handed the lady a cushioned
arm-chair, and he assured her that he
was “entirely and devotedly at her
service.” Seating, herself in the prof
fered office-chair, the lady ungloved a
small white hand that literally glisten
ed with diamonds, and applied a
Suezseented handkerchief to her lips,
blushed, and, casting, her eyes upon
the floor, said:
“My business is very particular—it
is—pardon me, sir, but you will not
betray me?”
“Betray you ? Not for the world,
madame, you can confide in me with
the same reliance as in a priest at the
confessional.”
“The fact is—l want—that is I havo
been unfortunate in my marriage re
lations.”
The eyes of the lawyer glistened
with pleasure, and, drawing his chair
close to the side of the lady, he re
marked:
“I see—l see you want a divorce.—
lam just the man to get it for you. I
am perfectly au fait in matters of this
kind, although I have never had a case
of this kind in court. How long have
you been married ?/
“Nine years.”
“Nine years! You must have been
very young when you entered that
blissful—l mean wretched state.”
“I was a mere child—a foolish, inex
perienced school girl. A doting moth
er placed me in the arms of a man old
enough to be my father; but he was
rich, and for two or three years I did
not know the difference.* I was as
happy as though my husband had
been twenty years younger. But asso
ciation with other married women
opened my eyes, and I became wretch
ed. I pined for—well, for a heart
that was more congenial with my own.;
A man of your age, now, would have 1
suited mo better.”
“Exactly so,” exclaimed the lawyer,
lubbing his hands and twisting his in
cipient moustache. “But your suffer- ‘
ing will soon terminate. I will get
you a divorce, and then—”
“Oh dear me!—and then—but I 1
must not be too sanguine. My bus- j
band is very rich, and he will never
let me get a divorce if he can help it.”
“Madame, you don’t know the law
—its majesty—its glorious certainty—
its magnanimity. Consider yourself
divorced, and rest easy.”
“Well, sir, how shall I proceed?”
“Let me see—in the first place, give
me a statement of your grievances.”
“That Would take a whole week.—
You can imagine what a woman like
me must suffer with such a husband.” j
“Yes, yes cruel and * barbarous
treatment condition intolerable—
neglect, and nil that sort of thing. I
will just jot, : a few of these items.
YoUl' lliUUe is'
“Mm. . You- must know my
husband.”
‘What Lie uiciohant? He’a /ioh f
as Croesus.”
Yes, he s rich; but I don’t care for
his mon§y—l \vant a divorce.”
The lawyer wrote down a sketch of
the lady’s matrimonial infelicities, and
n> nred her that he would have no
difficulty in producing, a divorce, with
at least SIO,OOO alimony.
“How much are you going to charge
me for making me so happy ?” inquir
ed the lady.
“Well, I ought to charge you a
thousand dollars, but out of consider
ation for your sufferings I will only
take a retainer of SIOO, and when it is
accomplished you will increase it to
$500.”
“That is extremely reasonable. I
liave no change about me now. Oh,
yes, here is a check for S2OO that my
husband gave me to-day to go shop
ping, I will only want half of it to-day.
Will you get it cashed forme?”
“It is after bank hours, but the
check is all right I will give you a
hundred dollars for your shopping and
keep the check.”.
The lawyer had that day received a
remittance of SIOO from his fathei*,
and handed it over to the lady, and
placing the check in his pocket-book,
bowed his client to the door. He was
excessively happy at his good-fortune,
and that night dreamed of angelic
clients’ sensational divorce* cases, and
a huge pile of SIOO bills.
The next morning he vrent to tho
bank to get the check cashed, and was
thunder struck when the teller inform
ed him that the name of Mr. was
forged. Indignant at the thought
that his fair client bad been guilty of
so base a crime as forging her hus
band’s name; be hurried to the store
of Mr. with the intention of ex
posing the lady. Ho was still more
astonished when Mr. informed
him that he was a widower, and had
not been blessed with a wife for more
than ten years.
Young Blackstono was seized with a
fit of melancholly, which still affects
him, for all his efforts to find the fair
swindler have proved unavailing. He
has come to the conclusion to have
nothing to do with divorce cases, and
has written .to his father to send him
another SIOO bill to replace the one he
gave his client for a bogus check.
Wo call the attention of our
readers to the subjoined articlo in this
issue, signed ‘‘Tax-Payer.” The au
thor states facts which, if true, ought
to demand the strictest investigation)
and expose the parlies whomsoever
they may be to whatever of censure or
punishment they may deserve at the
hands of the public, or the law. It is
easy to impose upon the credulity of a
confiding officer, and we do not know
that Governor Bullock may not have
been made the victim of interested
persons in many of the rewards which
have been offered for the apprehension
of supposed evil doers. If it be so, it
would be a righteous act upon the
part of his Excellency, and one which
the people of Georgia would approve 4
if he would, by turning his attention
to such gentry, expose their corrupt
practices* to the public and bringing
them before the courts for trial and
punishment, relieve himself from the
odium which now attaches for rewards,
wrung from his ignorance'of the causes
st ated, by the wilful and interested
misrepresentations of otjiers.
Let the Governor do it:

Corruption and Fraud in Cher
okee County.
Messrs. Editors: As an humble citi
zen of the State, and lover of justice
and fair dealing, I feel it to be my un
pleasant duty to call attention to the
! system of fraud that has been practiced
upon the State and Cherokee County ?
during the past three years. Ido not
propose to give a detailed account of
the outrages that have been committed
against the people in the matters re“
ferred to; but I wish merely to state a
few facts, hoping that an investigation
may be made by the proper autliori,
ties, in order that a stop may be put
to the evil. The following startling
i facets I think can be made to appear,
!by refering to the record and other
I sources:
| Ist. The round little sum of Eigh.
teen Thousand and Five Hundred
i
Dollars has been offered and paid, or
I forthcoming soon, as rewards for per
sons imported to Mr. Bullock as crimi
nals fled from justice, during the timo
specified.
; 2nd. In but a solitary instance ha3
a trial and conviction been the result,
as yet.
3rd. In more than one instance, par
ties have been arrested, rewards re
ceived, the parties escaped and large
rewards offered and received for their
recapture, when it is a matter of doubt
as to whether there is a particle of
evidence to convict them.
4th. By rel'ering to one of Mr. Bul
lock’s Proclamations it will bo seen
that Six Thousand Dollars are now
offered for the apprehension of certain
parties suspected of. killing a negro.—
The same amount has been paid for
themjeefore; it was well known in the
first instance that they were in Texas,
and it is known now that they are in
the same place, and accessible at any
time, it is believed.
sth. In another instance it was rep
resented to Mr. Bullock- that a certain
party, charged with a penal offence,
was at large and might be apprehend
ed if a sufficient reward were offered
Upon that representation, a regard of a
Thousand Dollars was offered, and
the prisoner was arrested without the
slightest resistance, and. it was well
known that he was not trying to keep
4 oat of the way.
6th. And in another instance, a qui
et citizen, now living in Mississippi*
was reported to Mr. Bullock as having
lied from justice; a reward of One
Thousand and Five Hundred Dollars
was offered for liis arrest; ho was
' caught., carried to Canton, examined,
and turned loose, as there was nothing
against him !
I ° .
Now, is there nothing wrong in all
this? Is it right, is it fair that the
taxes of the people should bo thus
squandered ? Is it possible that Mr.
. Bullock has no more shrewdness than
I to be the victim of such shallow tricks,
so often repeated, and at the expense
of the whole country ? Whither are
we drifting ? How long shall corrup
tion and fraud stalk nnblushingly
j abroad at noon-day ? How long un
til the last straw shall be laid on
which shall break the camel’s back ?

Grover and Baker Sewing Machine
rrUTYS celebrated SewingMaehino has l>een in
A use lor nearly twenty years, and is now us
ed by over three hundred thousand families,
and has gained a reputation far above any oth
er sewing Machine. It has been awarded' more
national prizes than any other machine in the
world; at the Great World’s Fair at New York,
it was awarded the Gold Medal; at the London
Fair it won the very highest prize, and in ISG7,
at Paris, it was awarded the Cross of the Legion
of Ilouor; beside* this, it has won the First
Premium at all the State Fairs where it has
beeu exhibited. However, we do not claim that
premiums won at our State and Countv Fails
any great honor or mark of distinction, as it
depends more on the operator than the machine,
they seldom have judges who are mechanics,
and judges of a Sewing Machine. At National
Fairs there are a sworn Committee, why are
judge? of machinery. The foltowing are some
of the reasons why the Grover & Buluir is, the
best: «
It is the lightest running Machine in nse; it is
the simplest; it is more rapid in its movements;
sews directly lmm two spools without rewind
ing; sew■s> all-kinds of work without bailing,
can do twicers mnclj work in a dav as anv
other machine; it is the most durable, and
almost noiseless; it sews equally well on all
kinds of goods, from the linest S\iiss muslin to
the heaviest Beaver cloth; makes the elastic
lock-stitch much the; strongest in use, an devorv
machine is fully warranted. Who can desire
any more in a sewing machine. There is every
variety and size of these machine, from the
lightest family to the heaviest leather machine.
These machines arc now for sale at Cartersville

there is scarcely an individual upon the face of the
earth whose body is exempt from the presence of
worms. It Is not upon the healthy elements of thu

disease. No System of Medicine, no vermifuges, no
