CarforsvllltjC»*> July I S, *S7I.
We were preeenled on Thursday morning
with a Curloifty in the shape' of a hybrid
between an apple and a grape, by Mr. Win,
C. Edwards, of this place. At his residence
a grape vine had taken possession of an ap
ple tree, and wound its coils and tendrils
completely around the bonghs of the apple
tree. Both are producing their legitimate
fruits—the apple tree apples and the grape
vine grapes; but upon the grapevine has
grown four well formed aud defined apples*
of which the sample we have is one of them.
Mr. Edwards is n newly married gentleman,
and a member of the Methodist Church, and
his wife is a member of the Baptist Church.
A friend at our elbow suggests that this
may be ominous of something. But then,
by what name arc we to distinguish that
something ?
In this connection wo would take occa
sion to state the following fact, which we
have from good authority : Rev. J. G. Ilyals,
living near this place, has upon his premis
ses an aged apple tree, upon which the sap
suckers had preyed until they had complete
ly perforated the bark from the ground to
the houghs, and the tree woe giving evident
signs of blight, A passing friend advised
him to skin the hark off the trunk as high
up rb the boughs, on a certain day in June,
which he did, and now, we learn, anew
bark is forming where the old was taken off.
Again, it is said that a good way to dead
en pine trees, is to first blare them with an
axe, in the month of August, and then turn
the poll of the axe and deal two or three
heavy blows with it iu the blazed place.—
It is further said that trees, of all kinds, are
more easily killed iu August, than at any
other season of the year.
The upland corn crops of this section,
■where they have been well worked, promise
an abundant yield of corn, up to this time.
Lowlands are not doing well, owing to the
fact that they have been drowned out. On
Tuesday hist we were in a field of corn be
longing to Col. Lewis Tumlin, said to con
tain 130 acres. The rows were about five
feet apart, and would average three feet be
tween stalks in the drill. The Btalk is not
overly tall, but very stout, and a majority of
stalks have two ears of corn. This field has
been thoroughly cultivated this year, and
the galled knolws were well manured, which
give the crop a uniform appearance but sel
dom observable in fields of this size. We
have no idea there is a better field of corn
to be found in North Georgia than this one.
Col. T. is a model farmer in more ways than
in raising corn, as any one can plainly see
who will visit him at his home. Upon his
.premises be has a thousand dollar stable in
which to house his mules and horses, built
by Messrs. Z. W. A M. C. Jackson & Cos., iu
which is a commodious loft for storing hay.
lie also has a fine merchant mill, on his
premises, where, from his refuse he can raise
hie hogs. No man in Georgia lives more
independently and plentifully, than be, with
less ostentation. He treats his visitors like
princes, and puts on no airs to do it. He
has his faults, like other men, but, withal,
pusses ics many very noble traits of charac
ter, and is a type of true Georgia hospitality
about his house; works himself and learns
his child ten to work, though one of the
wealthiest men in Upper Georgia. This is
no newspaper “puts” as some please to call
it, but is a collation of facts too apparent
to be gainsaid.
Cartersvillc is beginning to assume some
lie lendingf eatures of a manufacturing town,
though she has not shot out lier boughs to
a very great extent, as yet, but the bud is
swelling and soon the bloom must appear,—
The first stationary steam engine that ever
blew a whistle within her limits has bem
planted here since the war, and that was at
the old Magnolia Flouring Mill, which was
subsequently burnt down, but has since been
rebuilt, and is still one of her improvements.
Then went up, in close proximity, both the
Cartersville Foundry & Machine Shop, by
B. Scofield, and- The Steam Planing and
Matching Mill and Door, Sash and Blind
factory, by Z. W. & M. C. Jackson & Cos.,
which are now daily singing the song of
steam, to the admiration of her citizens. —
Within the last six months the Cartersville
Car Factory, by an association of gentle
men, has been put in full operation, and al
so the Holly Flouring Mills, by I. C. Mans
field & Cos , which is now supplying her cit
izens with fine, live flour. Five stationary
steam engines, driving as many different
establishments, already add interest to her
rising enterprises of still greater magnitude.
Off to the west, where, but a year or two
since, was heard nothing but the ’lowing of
cattle and braying of mules commingled
with the pierry songs of the industrious
plowman, as he plied his daily labor, now
in addition is heard the keen, shrill whistle,
of the flying steam horse and roar and clank
of rumbling car wheels as they bear preci
ous products and heap them into her lap.—
Soon, we hope, to see the thing repeated al
so from the east, where curls the black smoke
irom already belching iron furnaces, and
"here slumbers the mineral wealth which is
t 0 ra i&v her above a mere county town. —
a population of three thousand inhab
-11 antb, and it daily increasing, and a work
>ug people, too, w hat is to prevent her from
becoming a manufacturing town in the full
est sense of tbe word?

Campbell Wallace.
This gentleman arrived iu our city
last evening. He came upou the so
licitation of a large number of our cit
izens, who desire him to be made
President of the Georgia Western
Railroad. We learn that he says he
will build the road without delay if
chosen its President; that he will* at
once remove his family to Atlanta, and
put forth his whole might, earnestly,
zealously and unfalteringly, till the car s
are running from one eud of tne road
to the other.
We are uot Mr. Wallace’s personal
advocate for that important office. We
have no personal favorite. We want
the road ; and for the man who can cer
tainly build it ! Atlanta Sun.
We tie on to him, brother Sun, and
advocate him, too, and am glad to
learn that he has been unanimously e
lected President of said road, which
argues the full and entire success of
the project. All we ask to secure suc
cess iu almost any undertaking, are a
few more such men as Mai. Campbell
Wallace—the railroad prince of the
age.
Kailroml*—How to Prevent Ac
cidents.
Upon one of the main railroads of
England, over which thousands of
trams run each year, no accident of
any character lias occurred for the
past half decade. When called upon,
by the proper authorities to account
for this most gratifying fact, the Su
perintendent of the road credited it to
the adoption and rigid enforcement of
anew signal system. The system is
thus explained: No train is allowed to
leave one sigual station uutil that sta
tion has asked leave from the station
in advance, and received an affirma
tive reply. When the train has beeu
so allowed to leave, the sending station
must inform the receiving station that
the train has left, and the receipt of
such information must be acknowledg
ed.
Meanwhile, until these signals have
been made and ausw r ered, the danger
signals are kept up. Lastly, an imme
diate record is to be made of all these
signals, and the precise time of their
occurience. When to these precau
tions are added a strict watch over
the road at all points, constant atten
tion to the rails and bridges, and
double guards at all crossings, the ex
emptions from accidents can be traced
to the real causes. Such suggestions
are valuable to the railroad meu of
this country, and they should be well
considered. The Age.
Happy Death of Lillie Children.
‘
I knew a little boy not two years
old, who looked at his father and said,
‘By-by, pa, baby is going to sleep;’ and
he shut his eyes, aud never opened
them any more. And I knew anoth
er, thiee years old, who was sinking
into death, and said to his father, who
was near his side, “Father, there is,
beyond the sky, a heaven of joy and
love.” There was another, who was a
blind boy, who looked up as he was
dying, aud said, “I see a light; it is in
heaven. 1 * And a little girl, who was
motherless, when lying upon her back
and thought to be dead, all at ODce
opened her eyes, reached out her arms,
aud cried, “My mother I” and then
died. There was a little boy, who,
when taken sick, was afraid to die, and
said, “Mother, the valley of death is
very dark; will you not go with me ?”
His mother could only burst into tea» - s.
The little boy then put his face toward
the wall, and prayed, and then turn
ing to his mother with a sweet look,
said, "Mother, tho valley is not so
dark now, for Jesus is with me. I can
go now.”
DEATH OF CHRIST.
Did He Die of lSupfure of the
Heart!— A Opinion.
The theory tho death of Jesus of
Nazareth was produced by rupture of
the heart adds immensely to the trag
ic character of the event, if we consid
er it merely as the death of a human
being, aud render far more vivid our
conception of its sacrificial mature, as
being the death of one weighed down
w’ith the woes of man aud the wrath
of God if we view it as an expiatory
offering. This theory had been ad
vanced, with some force, by a number
of divines, but it was reserved for
William Strout, M. D., to demonstrate
it with as much of certainty as the na
ture of the, subject wills admit. A a
physician, thoroughly conversant with
the anatomy and physiology of the
human system, and a biblical student
fully versed iu the Bacicd Scripture*,
he brought to bear upou the subject
an accumulation of learning and re
! search, enforced by an enthusiasm of
conviction, an appreciation of the far
! reaching consequences of theory and a
power of txxtessioii, which have been
|so applied as to leave nothing to add
by way of pruoff and no iooib to an
swer by way of negation. “The Bn vs-
I ical Cause of the Death of Ch ust” is,
[indeed, a rare combination of medical
aL.d biblical learning, and of theologi
cal reasoning. Well authenticated
cases of death from excessive mental
emotion are qioted;it is proved that
tLis theory is the only one which ac
counts for the flowing of “blood and
water” from tbe skU- prophecies are
shown to have their real fulfillment
only on the assumption th it this the- |
ory is true; the insufficiency of other
theories account for the speed deceas
ed of the Saviour is demonstrated, and
the event itself clearly explained.
That we have in an appendix numer
ous cases of actual exudation of blood
tLr ugh the tkin, under severe meutul
emotion, to explain “the agony and
bloody sweat” ck the garden, and the
darkening of tbe sun and the eclipse
of the moon, which is not uncommon
in Palestine, is shown to accouut for
"the thick darkness” which prevailed
for three hours. The relation of the
theory to the principles and practices
of Christianity is fully and ably dis
cussed.

Grover and Baker Sewing Machine
mills celebrated Sewing Machine has been in
use for nearly twenty veare, and is now us
ed by over three hundred thousand families,
and has gained a reputation far above anv oth
er sewing Machine. It has been awarded more
national prices than any other machine in the
world; at the Groat World’s Fair At New York,
it was awarded the Gold Medal; at the London
Fair it won the very highest prize, and in 18«?,
at Baris, it was awarded the Cross of the Legion
of Honor; Imsides this, it has won the First
Premium at all the Slate Fairs where it has
been exhibited. However, we do notclaio Ih.vt

any great honor or mark of distinction, as it
de|M Uds mnreoirtbe njterator than the machine,
they seldom have judges who are mechanics,
ami judges of a Sewing Machine. At Nat ional
Fairs there are a sworn Committee, who are
judges of machinery. The following are some
of the reasons why the Grover & Baker is the
best:
It, is the lightest running Machine in nsu; it is
the simplest; it is more rapid in its movements;
sews directly from two spools without rewind
ing; sews all kinds of work without toasting,
can do twice as much work in a (lavas anv
other machine; it is the most durable, anil
almost noiseless; it flpwf eipiallv well on all
kinds of goods, from the ttiipst Swiss muslin to
the heaviest Beaver cloth; makes the darth
lock-stitch much the strongest in use, an eevorv
machine is fully warranted. Who cat, desire
any move in a sewing machine. There i- every
variety and size of those machine-, from Ulin.
