I,OCA H ITEMS. Cartersville* Gu.» .Tul) til, IS7I. The new Methodist Church, in this place, trill be r plain but handsome and coinmodi ous edifice, when completed. It ia £0 X 75 feet in the clear, 22 feet from ceiling to floor, with an oval recess for the pulpit ven tilated and lighted by two large windows. In the front is an octagon vestibule sur mounted by a 103 foot tower and spire.— Two entrances from the front into the ves tibule, and two from the vestibule into the main building, each opening into jnouth of an aisle. Three tiers of benches, the middle tier being 16, and the side tiers I°. feet long each, with two corner tiers of 12 feet each, and will scut between seven and eight hundred persons. The edifice, when completed, will cost about $8,0u0.00. Dirt was broke for its foundation on Monday last, on the site of the old church. The old church was sold at public outcry, and knock ed off to Dr. VV. W. Leak, who has had it rolled off on an adjoining lot, and is fixing it up for school rooms. The new church being on an elavation, and frouting the rail road, with a hundred feet spire, will give it quite an imposing appearance, when viewed from that point. It is also located near the centre of town, and being convenient to all, and accessible to all parts of the town, will always command good congregations. The work will be put through without delay, judging from the character of the contract ors for building it. Lartow County contains a population of about twenty thousand people, aud polls a vole of three thousand and upwards. In her limits there are three growing towns, viz : Cartcrsville, the county site, with about three thousand inhabitants; Kingston, dis tant about eleven miles northwest of Car terßville on the Western & Atlantic It. It., with a population *of from five to seven hun dred inhabitants; and Ad&irsville, distant ten miles northwest of Kingston on the same line of railroad, with a population of from three to five hundred inhabitants, Carters ville is located in the valley of the Etowah, at the western base of the Blue Ridge range of inofmtains, and is now the eastern termi nus of the Cherokee 11. IL, (formerly Car tersville & Van Wert R. R.,) and the west ern terminus of the projected Atlanta A Blue Ridge R. ft. Kingston is located on the waters of Two-Run Creek, and is known far and wide as the eastern terminus of the Rome Branch JR. R, Adairsville is located in theOothcaloga valley, and watered by a creek of the same name—a very fine section of country. Then there are a half dozen small villages, at which more or less busi ness is doue, to-wit; Cassville, formerly the county site and once a flourishing town once the scat of two prosperous institutions ■of learning—the name having been changed at the time Cass was changed to Bartow ■ County, from Cassville to Monnassas, Sher man and his legions, on passing through it, paid thur most devout respects to it by ap- plying the torch and laying it in ashes, un der the sting of defeat at its illustrious name sake. The place is now looking up some what. Cass Station, on the W. &A. R. R., in two miles of old Cassville and formerly the shipping depot for that ill-fated town, is a locality of some importance, there be ing several stores, groceries, &c., at that point, it commands a smart little trade.— This is the central point of the county.— urn Trot, or Pine Log, P. <3., is the ral point of the northeastern portion of the oou»ty There is a high school, the Pine Log Masonic Institute, located here, under the direction of Rev. J. M. Brittain; in addition there are stores, shops, &c., commanding some trade. Stilesboro, on the Cherokee R. R., between Cartersville and Van Wert, is quite an active and interest ing incorporated village. Here is located the Stilesboro Institute, an institution of learning of no mean pretentions—neat col lege edifice, commodious boarding bouse, stores, shops, &o. The society in aud a round the village is not to be excelled in the State. Euharlee, located on a large creek by the same name, a little low er down the great valley of the Etowali, is also an incorporated village, with unexceptionable society, good school, stores, shops, &c., to gether with a large merchant flouring mill, hy the same name. Allatoona, is a small village of no great pretensions, located at the southern mouth of the W. & A. R. R. Pass through the Blue Ridge range of moun tains, and known as the Allatooua Hills, is noted as the base of Federal supplies dur ing the latter days of the late war, and where Confederate Gen. French was defeated in an attempt to storm the Federal strongly entrenched position on the heights, in order to reach theit supplies. But little business done here, except as a shipping point, and a large wood and water station for the R. R. Bartow county ranks about sixth in the State, taken singly, but first when classified with others, in every material resource.— As an agricultural county she stauds at the head of the list. For mineral resources, none excel her. For refinement and intel ligence of her people, she measures arms with any of them, though there is still room fer improvement. In wealth, free and easy. In internal improvements, factories, mills, iron furnaces, and railroads, she abounds. In education and religion, her churches and school-houses speak for themselves. In cli mate, soil, and production, she combines the be.J of all. In pure water and air, none is in advance of her. For beautiful women and smart children, we defy the world.— We might say much more, and truthfully, too, aboutour county—it? picturesque scene ry, its lovely streams, its fruits and its flow ers, its birds and its songs—but, for fear that someone will think that we are over estimating tfae true worth of our county, we w ill desist from saying more at this time, hoping that all good people who are casting about for good lands and comfortable homes, "ill call and see Bartow county. A great man y have done so, and have gone away dis uPpointed, not at the general features of our chtnafo, soil, and society, but at the high l' U, <'s for good lands, not remember - that the reason they appear high is at mtable to the advantages they possess bu lands, though equally as fertile, ! yet possessed of no other advantage. Our good lands are high priced because they are well improved, productive, heahhy, seMled np with good society, convenient to rail roads and markets, and chequred by j school houses and churches. If these ad vantages dont make valuable lands, what does? Land buyers usually pick tjie most valuable places possessing all these advan tages, and expect to pay such prices for them as if they were on the frontiers. Those who come to Bartow county with such an expectation will always go away disappoint ed. -""■■y TOWN MATTERS. .T.T.Gibson, Lotuil Editor. W. Mt'UPHY is our authorized Agent and Collector. The new brick buildings of Messrs. Jones and McGinty are fast going up* the brick work of the first story is completed. Passenger trains ou the State Road have been on a “bust” for a day or two past, we suppose, they haviug been behind time one or two days. Business is reviving. Skinner & Clayton have some of the finest cigars in town. Lym*n Chapman is going right ahead with the brick work of the new jail; when finished, it will be one of the most secure in the State. Work has been commenced on the new Methodist Cnurch. It is to have a spire one hundred feet high. i&F Our devils amuse themselves when at leisure, by throwing water on one another. Fine sport this. It may he safe ly assumed that not one man in ten throughout the State, to say nothing of the softer sex, will fail to take his risk in securing a fortune from the 2404 prizes to be drawn in October next.— Hence, the ladies should be eminently success ful in the sale of tickets, and in earning the le gitimate profits which attach thereto. Sophomore Day, Oxford Ga. The exercises, this morning Were very in teresting, and, in spite of the great heat, the Methodist ch arch “was crowded to excess to hear the declamation of the Sophomores. The programme opened at 9,30 a. m., with prayer by Rev. Mr. Parks. The Oxford Brass Band discoursed sweet music in a very efficient manner during the exercises. The programme of declamation was as fol. lows: 1. A. F. Barnett, of Milledgeville, “Rien za to the Romans.” 2. I. L. Fielder, of Cuthbert, “Grime its own Detector.” 3. J. VY. Grover and Baker Sewing Machine THIS celebrated Sewing Machine has been in use for nearly twenty years, and is now us ed by over throe hundred thousand families, and has gained a reputation far above any'oth er sewing Machine. It has been awarded’ more national prizes than any other machine in the world; at the Great World's Fair at New York, it was awarded the Gobi Medal: at the London Fair it won the very highest prize. and in 1867, at Paris, it was awarded the Cross of the Legion of Honor; besides this, it has won the First Premium at all the State Fairs where it has been exhibited. However, we do not claim that premiums won at our State and Geurtty Fairs any great honor or mark of distinction, as it depends more on the operator than the machine, they seldom have judges who are mechanics, and judges of a Sewing Machine. At National Fairs there are a sworn Committee, who are judges of machinery. The following are some of the reasons why the Grover & Baker is the best: It is tne lightest running Machine in use; it is the simplest; it is-more rapid in its movements; sews directly tromtwo spools without rewind ing-; sews att kinds of work without baisting, can do twice as much work in a dav as any other machine; it is the most durable, and almost noiseless; it sews equally well on all kinds of jjpoods, from the linest Swiss muslin to the heaviest Beaver cloth; makes the elastic lock-stitch much the strongest in use, an deverv machine is fully warranted. Who can desire any more in a sewing machine.
