O. HUDSON, .July 22, 1871. RONALD JOHNSTON. The neighborhood of Francis Fontaine’s, some six miles up the Tennessee road from this point, was visited by a heavy fall of rain and hail, on Sunday last. A little fur ther np that road in the neighborhood of the Poor House, there fell also a moderate sea sonable shower, on the evening of that day. Only a light sprinkle fell at this place. It is very much needed, at this time, herea bouts. ? *? , The “Rock Mart Slate” is the title of a new weekly newspaper soon to be started at the young and rising town of Bock Mart, Polk county, Ga., by J. TANARUS, Gibson & Co.— Rock Mart is the present western juuc tiou of the Cherokee Railroad, and about one mile below old Van Wert, in the midst of the inexhaustable Slate beds of that aec tion of north Georgia, Polk county, by ac tual minerological investigation, has been pronounced the richest mineral county in the State. In addition to its miner.l pro ducts, it is also one of the best agricultu ral districts of the South, through which runs one of the finest belts of yellow pine timber in the Southern States, in almost in exhnustable quantity. Immense quantities of lumber is shipped over the Cherokee R. R., now daily, from this belt, to this and the Atlanta markets. The cars are now running over this railroad to Taylorsville, a distance of thirteen or fourteen miles, and two hundred hands are now employed in constructing the remaining eight miles to Rock Mart., to which point the authorities aim to have the cars running by the first of September next. Here this road will inter sect with the Georgia Western from Atlanta* and branch road from Marietta, via Van Wert and Cedar Town to Prior’s Station on the Selma, Home & Dalton R. R. At no distant day, the Cherokee R. R. will be con tinued westward to Cross Plains, Ala., also on the S., R. &D. 11. R., and eastward to some point on the Air-Line R. R., from this place (Cartersville), making a chain in the link of railroads frem New York to New Orleans, at least a hundred miles shorter than any other route. Possessing all these facilities and advantages, Rock Mart lias a glorious prospect looming up in no distant future. The object of the “Slat*/’ is to be come the mouth-piece in the consummation of all these great, enterprises, We urge tlie people of l’olk county, in consideration of the fact that this paper is designed for the furtherance of every man’s interests, in the building up and development cf her ma terial resources, to go to work in its behalf, by subscribing yourselves and obtaining subscribers for the paper. It will be con ducted by an old citizen of your county, and one who has long been wedded to its hills and yallies, not only in interest, but by all the ties which bind one to the home of his childhood and youth—he being a native of your county. Honor him with your smiles and by your exertions, and he will repay you for all your trouble, good measure, sha ken together, heaped up and running over. Long may the “Rock Mart Slate” hang out, and upon it may the consummation of these grant enterprises, together with the com plete success of the place as a great manu facturing centre, be reoorded to be seen aed read of all men. So mote it be. Among the many manufactories springing up in our State, for the amount, of capital invested, but few promise a more remunera tive return, than the Soap Factory of Mess. Hitchcock & Spencer, Atlanta, Ga., whose advertisment appears in another column of this paper. We received samples of their soaps, and hesitate' riot to pronounce them to be all that is claimed for them, and recommend these gentlemen to the patron age of our merchants. Why is it that some party or parties do not establish a Laundry in this place? It would certainly pay a handsome income, be sides it would be a great, convenience to our citizens who have to hire out their washing and ironing. Our Bakery, we learn, is in full blast, and soon the candy manufactory will be in like condition. It seems, from the Atlanta New Era of the 22nd, that Gridin is following in the wake of Cartersville, or vice versa, as we find in its State news columns, under the head of “Griffin,” an account of a Methodist church they are building, of the same size and de sign of the one we described as being built in this place, in our i>iday morning's issue, costing exactly the same amount of money, dirt was broke for building it on the same day, the old church was sold ai public out on the same day of ours, and w bought by the same who had it rolloa «# 0" “ “ Ooming ju , t a, „„„ is having it fixed up for school rooms, just a.’ ours , 8 being done, Rather a strange coin-' cidence, that. Correspondence of the Journal of Commerce. Cartersville, a pleasant, thrifty and beautiful town in the valley of the Et owah river, in Cherokee, Georgia, fifty miles on the way from Atlanta to Chattanooga, is said to be the garden spot of Georgia. The natives consid er it “a right smart town, with a heap of people in it.” It is situated exact ly on the line between the cotton and grain regions of this section, and sends to market from surrounding sections a variety of products that cannot be du plicated in quantity and variety by any place of its size in any foreign country. The town commenced after the war with about 500 inhabitants, and now has about 3,000. Cartersville has maguificent sur roundings. The beautiful plantations in the vicinity are planted mostly in grass this year, with some cotton, and it all looks well. The sots is very rich and productive. The cotton in this section of Georgia will make two | thirds of a crop if the ruin does not continue with its u-.ual regularity and destroy the stand by preventing the work. Being high rolling ground the water has washed off and allowed a chance to work it some, but it cannot endure much more rain. This is in the midst of the iron re gion. Some five furnaces of large ca pacity are engaged in making pig iron from ores taken from the neighbor hood. The iron is sold to foundries and machine shops in other localities —Chattanooga (80 miles from here,) Atlanta, etc. Among the other indus tries are a large car factory, two mer chant flouring mills, an extensive car riage manufactory, plaining mill, sev eral wagon shops, and a number of stores and warehouses. This is the residence of Gen. P. M. B. Young, who represents the Atlanta district in Congress. The district is as fine and prosperous as any in the South. It is traversed by twelve rail roads, which furnish an outlet to mar ket for the products of all parts of it. The climate is delightful. Cartersville is a famous summer resort for visitors from the Southern seacoast who desire dry and elevated summer residences. There is said to be iron ore enough in the mountains surrounding tuis place to supply the entire world for years. It is singular that it has not been developed before and that it is not now being utilized more rapidly. W. P. c. ‘ The above is from the pen of a dis interested and impartial witness, as he gave our town and county a passing glimpse. But the half has not yet been told. Seeing is believing and needs no further affirmation. We are a great people and have a great town. People who want to buy goods and groceries cheap, come here to do it ; Messrs. Gower, Jones & Cos., manufac ture vehicles for, and sell them to, par ties for a hundred miles around, and their business still continues to in crease. Messrs. Gower and Hall built up an enviable reputation while at Gainesville, Ga., and Rev. R. H. Jones has done the same thing here, as man ufacturers of vehicles, of all kinds; all are experienced hands at the business. Our steam mills cant be beat for good flour and meal. Grover and Baker Sewing Machine m YUS celebrated Sewing Machine has Veen iu JL use for nearly twenty years, and is now us ea by over three hundred thousand families, and has gained a reputation far above any oth er sewing Machine. It Las l»een awarded more national prizes than any other machine in the world; at the Great World’s F’air at New York, it was awarded the Gold Medal; at the London Fair it won the very highest prize, and in 18H7, at Paris, it was awarded the Cross of the Legion of Honor; besides this, it has won the First Premium at all the .State Fairs where it ha.- been exhibited. However, we do notclaim that premiums won at our State and County Fairs any great honor or mark*of -distinction, as it depends more on the operator than the machine, they seldom have judges who are mechanics, and judges of a Sewing Machine. At National Fairs there are a sworn Committee, who are judges of machinery. The following are some of the reasons why the esrover A Baker is the best: It is the tightest running Machine in usfc; it is the simplest; it is more rapid in its movements; sews directly trom two spools without rewind ing; sews all kinds of work without baisting, can do twice as nint h work in a dav as anv other machine; it is the most durable, anil almost noiseless; it sews equally well on all kinds of goods, from the linest Swiss muslin to the heaviest Beaver cloth; makes the elastic lock-stitch much the strongest in use, an devery machine is fully warranted. Who can desire any more in a sewing machine. There is every variety aud size of these machines, from the lightest family to the heaviest leather machine. These machines are now for sale at Oartorsville, Ga., byLeon A (.AMP, in one of Judge Parrott’s new .Store Houses, under the City hall. Ma chines will lie delivered to customers either in or out of the city, and full instructions given free of charge; and should any of opr machines fall short of our recommendation, the monev will be cheerfully refunded.tar placed in its stead any other machine in use.
