fla?"* Walking slowly down Main
street Saturday evening about nine
o'clock, thinking of everything in gen
eral and nothing in particular, our ears
suddenly caught the sound of music,
which caused us, almost involuntarily,
to proceed toward the place from
whence the melodious sound emanated.
Having arrived at a point where dis
tance lent enchantment—not to the
view, but the sound, we halted and
enrapturously listened to the dove like
•voice oi the moon-struck youth, and
the dulcet notes of the banjo with
which another youth who had evident
ly been drinking moon-beams, accom
panied him, we were more forcibly
than ever before impressed that mu
sic did really have charms to soothe,
&c. The harmony was complete, the
voice of the young man aud notes of
the banjo cording so precisely that it
was diflieut to distinguish “which from
tother.aud tother from something else.’’
Ko discords, no harsh or grating notes,
nor anything repulsive to the “most
refined and educated musical ear,” but
as the melodious sounds floated forth
upon the evening zephyrs, and were
01 ne gently away, verberating and re
verberatiug ots’r hill and dale, uowr’js
! ing now falling, gradually yet sooth
ingly and sweetly dying away, it made
|us feel like we had been suddenly
caught up from this mundane sphere,
to the abode of the muses, a place
resonant with the “concord of sweet
sounds,” or were again listening to
the fascinating voice of the “Sweet
Singer of Zion,” or had unconsciously
been transported to, and were wander
ing through Elysfan fields. All
things earthly are evernesceut, and
have an end, and although the music j
to which we had been listening, we 1
thought rather unearthly, it too, came |
to an end, thus breaking our reverie*
and the last we heard of the young
enchanters they were earnestly en
treating someone to ‘ Put them in

hearted fellow did, after which a sol

While liiiigrniitM for Hie South.
[From the Augusta Chronicle and Sentient.]
The attention of tiie readers of the Cron
cle k Sentinel is directed to the advertise
ment of Messrs. Butler, Chadwick, Gary &
Cos., which appears in another column of
this paper. It will be seen that they have
formed a Land and Immigration Association
for the purpose of bringing to South Caroli
na immigrants from Europe and the North
ern States, arul settling them upon lands se
lected by the Assocition. The manner in
which they propose to raise funds to carry
out this most commendable design is briefiy
as follows: One hundred and fifty thousand
tickets are to be sold at five dollars per tick
et, which will entitle the holders to admis
sion to a series of concerts to be! given in
Charleston during the month of next Octo
ber. Each purchaser of a ticket will also
be entitled to a chance at two thousand four
hundred and four gifts, which will be dis
tributed during the progress of the concerts.
The prises amount to five hundred thousand
dollars, and all of them are in cash save
one. The first prize is the Academy of
Music—a magnificent buildiug recently
erected in Charleston- It is one of the fin
est buildings in the South, is situated in the
centre of the city, brings in an unusal rental
ol si-0,000, and cost $200,000. The second
prize is one hundred thousand dollars, the
third, twenty-five thousand; the fourth, ten
thousand, and so on. The scheme is re
commended, and its managers endorsed by
the best and most prominent citizens of
South Carolina and New York city. Some
ot these managers certainly need no en
dorsement. Generals M. C. Butler and M.
W. Gary, for instance, are too well known
among us to need backing, and their names
aloiic show that there is nothing bogus til
the Association. The purchaser of a five
dollar ticket may become one of the wealth
iest men in the South, and whoever draws
a prize is sure of getting it—no matter
where he oornes from or whom he may be
But, laying aside a pecuniary view of the
matter, the objects of the Association are
such as will receive the support and approv
al of every m.n in the South who desires
the material prosperity of his country.
South Corolina is overrun with anative col-,
ored population idle and thriftless. It is
with the greatest difficulty that laborers for
the plantations cau be procured ; vast tracts
ot laud are not cultivated at all, and every
species of real estate has greatly deprecia
ted in value. In order to remedy this dis
tressing condition of affairs, in order that
education and reliable laborers may be se
cured, that the vast resources of the btate
may be developed, and the price of land
may appreciate to something near their val
ue, the aid of immigration must be invoked.
Intelligent and industrious laborers must
be procured from England, Ireland, France,
Germany, Sweeden, the Northern States
and the Eastern. To get this labor requires
capital at first. It is folly to talk of bring
ing immigrants to the South unless induce
ments are held out to them. Immigration
Societies have hitherto attempted to do bus
iness in the South withaut money—and
hence their failure. The passage money of
the immigrants^must be advanced to them,
and lands sold cheaply and on long time, or
good wages must be paid. The managers of
the Association above mentioned know and
appreciate these facts, and are working in
accordance with their teachings. While this
Association is a Carolina institution, it is
not the State alone which will be benefitted.
We, of this State, are fully as much interest
ed in its success. If the stream of immigra
tion can be diverted from the West, though
South Carolina may be the first State to feel
its effects, Georgia will soon be reached, and
every other Southern State will be a gainer
also. We trust that the scheme will receive
the liberal encouragement of our citizens.
Messrs; John J. Cohen & Sons are general
agents for the sale of tickets in Augusta.
A Knotty Law Question. -One of the
oldest questions ever submitted to law
yers, is now puzzling those of Hart
ford, Connecticut. It seems that a
man who recently died there left a
widow, childless, but expecting shortly
to become a mother. By his will he
provided that if his expected child
proved to be a boy, two-thirds of the
property should go to him and one
thira to the widow ‘ mother. If, how
ever, the child proved to be a girl, only
one-third of the estate was to go to
her and two-thirds to the mother. The
result was, of course, awaited with an
interest even greater than that usual
ly bestowed upon such events. The
result is, the widow has become the
mother of twins —a boy and a girl.

Grover and Baker Sewing Machine
THIS celebrated Sewing Machine has been in
use for nearly twenty years, and is now us
ed by over three hundred thousand families,
and has gained a reputation far above any oth
er sewing Machine. It has been awarded’more
national prizes than any other machine in the
world; at the Great World’s Fair at New York
it was awarded the Gold Medal; at the London
Fair it won the very highest prize, and in 1887,
at Paris, it was awarded the Cross oft he Legion
of Honor; besides this, it has won the First
Premium at all tl>e State Fairs where it has
been exhibited. However, we do not claim that
premiums won at our State and Countv Fairs
any great honor or mark of distinction, as it
depends more on the operator than the machine,
they seldom have judges who are mechanics,
and judges of a Sewing Machine. At National
Fairs there are a sworn Committee, who are
judges of machinery. The following are some
of the reasons why the Grover & Baker is the
best:
It is the lightest running Machine in use; it is
the simplest; it is more rapid in its movements;
sews directly trom two spools without rewind
ing; sews all kinds of work without baisting,
can do twice as ranch work in a dav as anv
other machine; it is the most durable, anil
almost noiseless; it sews equally well on all
kinds of goods, from the finest Swiss muslin to
the heaviest Beaver cloth; makes the elastic
lock-stitch much the strongest in use, andevory
machine is fully warranted. Who can desire
any more in a sewing machine. There is every
variety and size of these machines, from the
lightest family to the heaviest leather Machine.
These machines are now for sale at Carter*rate,
Ga., by Leon A CAMP, in one of Judge Parrott’s
new Store Houses, under the City hall. Ma
chines will be delivered to customers either in
or out ot the city, and full instructions given

MILLIONS Bear Testimony to Ihelr
* Wonderful Curntlve Effect*.
They are not a vile Fancy Drink, Mads of Poor
Rum, Whiskey, Proof Spirit* and Refuse
Liquors doctored, apiced and nweotened to pleaao the
taste,called “Tonics,” “Appetisers,’' “Bcstorers,”fcc.,
that lead the tippler oil to drunkenness and ruin, but are
a true Medicine, made front the Native Root* and Herbs
of California, free from oil Alcoholic Stimu
lant*. They are the GREAT BLOOD PI Kl-
FIERaml A LIFE GIVING PRINCIPLE,
a perfect Renovator and lnvigorstor of the Sytua.
carrying off all poisonous matter and restoring thebloe A
to a healthy condition. No person esn take these Bit
ters according to directions and remain K»ng unwell,
provided thoir bones are not destroyed by mineral
poison or other means, and the vital organ* wasted
beyond tlio point of repair.
They are u Gentle Porgntlve n* well n* is
Tonic, possessing, also, the peculiar merit of acting
as a powerful tgrnt in relieving Congestion or Inflam
mation to the Liver, and all the Visceral Organs.
FOR FEMALE COMPLAINTS, in younger
old, married or single, at the dawn of womanhood or at
the turn of life, these l’onic Bitters have no equal.
For Inflammatory and Chrenir lihesms*
lism and Gout, Dyspepsia or ludigo*ti*u.
Milieus, Remittent and Intermittent Fe
vers, Disease* of the Blood, Liver, Kid
neys and Bladder, these Bitters have been most
successful, Sucli Diseases are caused by Vitiated
Blood, which is generally produced by
of the Digestive Orgnna.
DYSPEPSIA OR INDIGESTION. ’ o

the Heart, Inflammation of the Lungs. Pam in the ..
gioui of the Ridnejs, and a hundred other painful i;nu
tome, are tho offsprings of Dyspepsia.
They invigorate the Stomach and stimulate tbc torpt
Liver and Bowels, which reuacr them of unequal
efficacy in cleansing the blood of all impurities, ana ir»
parting new life and vigor to th# whole system.
FOR SKIN DISEASES, Eruptions,Tetter. Sait

bu tides. It ing-Worms, Scald Head. Sore Kyqe, Eryslpe
las Itch. Scurfs. Discolorations of the Skin, Humors and
Diseases of the Skin, of whatever name or nature, are
literally dug up and carried out of the syetem in a shoft
time by the use ot these Bitters. One bottle in sack
cases will convince the most incredulous of their sura
tive effects.
Cleanse the Vitiated Brood whenever you find Its fm
purities bursting through the skin In Pimples, Erup
tions or Sores ; cleanse it when you find It obstructed
and sluggish in the veins : cleanse It when it is foul,
and your feelings will tell you when. Keep the blood
pure, and the health of the system will follow.
Pin, Tape, and oilier Worms, lurking lathe
system of so many thousands, are effectually destroyed
and removed. Bays a distinguished physiologist,
there is scarcely an individual upon th# face or the
earth whose body ii exempt from the prvsenes of
worms. It is not upon the healthy elemeata es the
body that worms exist, but upon ths diseased humor*
and slimy deposits that breed these living monsters of
disease. No System of Medicine, no vermifuges, a*
anthelmintics will free the system from worms Ilk*
these Bitters.
