m~. A 1 avvyer and a mechanic met up to
gether on our streets, a few days since, and
very naturally fell into conversation about
matters and things in general. It seems
that the conversation turned on loud and
boisterous speaking, so common among min
isters of the gospel in this day. The law
yer remarked that he saw no good sense in
a preacher’s ranting and halloing to the top
•of his voice, as a certain preacher (naming
him,) iu Cavtersville was accustomed to do;
that ho had practiced law for several years,
and had made many speeches during that
time, and he always spoke in a mild yet au
dible voice—easily understood by everybody
it) the court room; and, lie thought, that was
sufficiently loud for a public speaker. Stop,
said the mechanic, you forget. The preach
er speaks out boldly, so that everybody may
hear him, knowing that he is speaking the
truth; but you spoke in a suppressed tone of
voice, knowing that you were telling lies.—
That’s the difference between you and the
preacher ! At last accounts the lawyer had
not rallied from his set-back, while the me
chanic is still laughing in his sleeves.
fear In our last issue, speaking of the tri
al of those young men for the killing of the
negro Wright, at Corra’s mill, in June last,
we said “The impression was sought to be
made that they were Kuklux.” From the
connection of the sentence with the subject
preceding it, it might convey the idea that
the counsel for the State, in their
labored to create this impression. We did
not intend to be thus understood, as they
said nothing about Kuklux; we should have
said that “the impression had been sought to
be made, i. c., when the atfuir first occurred
it was charged upon the Kuklux as an or
ganization as the perpetrators of the bloody
deed. We say this much in vindication of
the gentlemen who were employed as coun
sel by the State.
We took a flying trip over the Cherokee
Railroad to Taylorsville and back, ou even
ing last, in company with Capt. Peacock,
lady, daughter and son, Col. Abda Johnson,
Rev. H. J, Sistrunk, of Houston, and others.
We did not return with a flea iu our ear,
but with a cinder in our eye and the tears
rolling freely, which confined our sight-see
ing to one eye. We saw cuough to see that
laylorsville was a bran new town with two
stores and a depot, surrounded with heaps
upon piles of lumber, laths, shingles, and
slate. If they haven't built up a very large
•own thereat is not for want of material.—
It ought to have been called ‘Lumbertown ’
Here the narrow gague track begins, which
is now being done up rapidly by Col. Grant
and his boys—(the convicts!. It is about
eight miles from this point to Van Wert, to
which point the road is graded, with the ex
ception of Deacon's Hill, where a portion of
the hands are now at work. From Van-Wert
to Ccdartown is twelve miles, upon which
the balance of the hands are now at work.
From Cedartown to Trior’s Station on the
Rome & Dalton R. 11., is seven miles,
taking the Cherokee K. R. about thirty
uine or forty miles long. But few roads,
’hus far, pay better than this one. Fifteen
c ar loads of lumber, &c., were brought in
last Saturday, bssides outward freights and
passenger fare. It runs through a fine
•ion of country, and brings into market
1 almost, inexliaustable supply of building
' tiial. Now for the Eastern extension.
feaST We have beeu sending our paper to
several gentlemen in and around Cartersville
ever since the war, or for several years, at
least, and they seem to think that they are
never expected to pay for it—or they don’t
do it anyway. VVc wish it distinctly under
stood that we don't publish a paper for free '
circulation ! We don’t wish to insult any j
gentleman by abruptly cutting him off of our
subscription list. We appeal to the reader
of this note to know bow long it has beeu i
since you paid up your subscription for the ,
Express V By virtue of what do you think
you are getting your subscription free while i
others have to pay for it in advance? Met
chants are excepted from this class, as they
all pay up, if not in money they do in kind.
Come, gentleman ! pay the printer, and sit
down and read your paper with a clear con- !
science. What if your neighbor does trou- !
ble you about borrowing your Express to j
read? It is not as bad as you are doing, if!
you liavn’t paid for it; and you can’t tell
him to do as you have done, take a paper
and promise to pay for it and never do it*
You don’t feel that lie would be doing right.
Your wife and children at home are not a
ware of the fact that, in reading the Ex
press twice a week, they are reaping the
fruits of the toils of the honest, laboring j
printer unremunerated. They think you
have paid for it. We ask every wife aud
child in Cartersville to propound this ques
tion to the husband and father who takes
the paper. If you have paid for it you can j
answer so affectionately “Yes, my darlings j
I have already paid my subscription for the '

Whiskey.
Who cau estimate the evils resulting
from drinking whiskey? Who can
calculate the losses caused by it—of
time, of money, of character, of peace,
of happiness, oflife ? Such reflections as
the above, are caused by events which
have recently transpired iu our midst.
The adjourned term of the Superior
Court of Bartow County has just
closed, and the result of its sitting
briugs sadness to many a heart. One
poor wretch has been sentenced to be
hanged for murdering his own child \
What a sad fate ! And whiskey has
had much to do in bringing him to
such an unhappy end. If his father
had been a sober man, and saved the
hard earnings which he spent for
whiskey, and educated his sou, and
taught him to walk iu the paths of so
briety and virtue, he would not have
committed the unnatural and horrible
deed, for which his miserable life is
soon to pay the forfeit. And three
tine locking young men are doomed to
spend the remainder of their lives at
hard labor and confinement in the
Penitentiary, for being concerned in
the perpetration of a brutal deed,
from which they would have shrunk
with horror if it had not been for
uhhkey. One of them, in the examin
ation before the preliminary Court,
was heard to say that he went to a
certain place, on a certain night, for
the purpose of drinking whiskey. Sa
tan was in that whiskey, and entered
into that youug man, and his ruin is
the result.
All Outrage upon Decency.
We have it upon reliable informa
tiora, that there is a young lady in
Cherokee Couuty, who frequently
takes evenings rides upon horse-back
with a large buck nigger for a gallant!
That young ladh is the daughter of
Gov. Bullocks Superiutendant, who
runs the splendid from of his excell ncy
in the couuty aforesaid. Whe decent
people in the vicinity, are disgusted
with this proceeding and regard it as
an insult offerd to those who are op
posed to the social equality of the ra
ces. But after all, it is a mere mat
ter of taste,
For Birds of a feather
Will flock together.”
This is a progressive age, and the
Government is in the hands of a pro
gressive party. Let them follow their
indinetx, and set their examples, but
the consolation is, we are not obliged
to follow either. The wise man says,
“Shame is the promotivo of fools.”
Many of late have been promoted in
this way, and many more are seeking,
a notoriety from wich all honest, de
cent. people should pray to be deliver
ed.

Grover and Baker Sewing Machine
rrVI IS celebrated Sewing Machine has been in
1 nsefor nearly twenty years, and is now us
ed by over three hotwired thousand families,
and has gained a reputation far a hove anr oth
er sewing Machine. It has been awarded more
national prizes than any other machine in the
world; at the Great World’s Fair at New York,
it was awarded the Gold Medal; at the London
Fair it won the very highest prize, and in 18(57.
at Baris, it was awarded the Gross of the Legion
of Honor; liesides this, it has \von the First
Premium at all the State Fairs where it has
been exhibited. However, we do not claim that
premiums won at our state and County Fairs
any great honor or mark of distinction, as it
depends more on the operator than the machine,
they seldom have judges who are mechanics,
and judges of a Sewing Machine. At National
Farrs there are a sworn Committee, who are
judges of machinery. The following are some
of the reasons why the Grover & Baker is the
best:
It is the tightest running Machine in u«e; it is
the simplest; it is more rapid in its movements;
sews directly from two spools without rewind
ing; sews all kinds of work without haisting.
can do twice as ninch work in a dav as any
other machine; it ts the most durable, anil
almost noiseless; it sew- equally well on all
kinds of goods, from the finest srwrss muslin to
the heaviest Beaver cloth; makes the elastic
lock-stitch much the strongest in use, anPevci v
machine is fully warranted. Who can desire
any more in a sewing machine. There is every
variety and size of these machines, from the
lightest family to the heaviest leather machine.
These machines are now for sale at Carter-vilb*.
Ga.. by Leon A CAMP, in one of Judge Parrott’s
new Store Houses, under the City hall. Ma
chines will be delivered to customers either in
or out of the city, and full instructions given
free of charge; and should any of our machines
sass short of <>t»r recommendation, the money
will he cheerfulTv refunded or placed in its
stead any other machine in nse. <>M Machines

shortest notice.
