THFBEjjI-WEEKLY EXPRESS. -*• w. lAMIl" \ 1 •- n. smith, t Editors and Proprietors. *• H. BItKWHTKH, ) CARTERBVILLE, Ga., OCT. 17, iSll The Legislature of the Stnte of Georgia will rood assemble at Atlanta, nnd the people of the State expect that it will discharge its duties fearlessly nud fully. It is composed of ain ijori- 1 ty of Democrats in both Hons'*s, un- , trammelled by Federal bayonets, and hat iu its power, for the first time since j the war to show to the world, that j the good of the jieople, niul the I>reser?a»iou of their rights and prop erty, rather than the success of cliques and rings, and covering over the mis deeds and malfeasances of men in au- j thority. is the purpose of their j assembling. A tax-ridden people, u people plundered of their means and j substance by the unhe rd of rascalities which have so afflicted them, and’ dis graced the Stute, ever since the coming in of the present State administration* demand of their Democratic liepresen t» lives, that the broadest and most I searching inquiries be made into all the actings and doings which have for ' so long, been a matter of serious pub lic complaint; and that such determin ed uiid thorough enquiries be made that not one of the nial-doers, no j matter who he may be, shall escape the , bar of public justice. They expect no sham work, no white-wasuing experi ments, no tender handling of those j who have so unblushingly peculated iq>on the public funds, but such an honest, thorough iuvestig tion as shall leave no loop-hole through which the guilty may et-cape. Let not the Leg islature be satisfied or put off with the farcical trials which have lately trans pired at Atlanta, but select their best, most he nest and capable men, who ahull enquire into the matters touching the public weal, and bring to light the C*vil deeds, and the evil doers, holding them up to public reprobation, and, if }H>ssible, secure somewhat of the plun dered treasures of the State. The State lload, and its manage ment demands, and must receive the strictest enquiry, and without this, the people w ill not, and cannot be satisfied* They wish to know what has become of its proceeds; how disposed of; who has got them, and such u showing made as will make them understand how it is possible that an honest ad ministration of the affairs of a great Stnte interest, such as the Western & Atl lUtic Railroad, yielding a gross! annual income of between Oue Mliliou ; nod Eighteen Hundred Thousand Dol lars, could only pay into the Treasury for that time, the pitiful sum of Forty- Five Thousand Dollars, while ail the b and tuce of th.tt euorw us sum, his Itoelt squandered or absorbed. Wlth uut charging any one as guilty of pub lic peculaiio , we wish to know how tne affairs of the road stand, and we r* peat, what has become of the income of the State, derivable from this large public interest ? The people demand it, and the Representative who goes back »o his constituents from the Leg islature without having made an effort to do the State justice iu this particu lar, will be very apt to stay at home ' iu the future. The people demand it. The annual proceeds of the State Road, under au honest and wise ad ministration of its affairs, are, they know and believe, sufficient to pay ev ery solitary expense of a Stale admin istration, itself wisely and honestly ' administered. But now the road is iu deb.; its proceeds vanished; the State almost on the verge of bank ruptcy, and the people poor, oppressed nnd beleagured by a thousand wants, are absolutely unable to pay their enor mous taxes, in many instances being compelled to sell property to meet the demands of the tax gather. The peo ple demand it, and we trust that when the L< gislature shall assemble, that that demand will be fully, promptly, satisfactorily met and answered. The lease of the road itself, will come iu, as a matter of course, under this enquiry, and the State will have the opportuni ty of knowiug whether it has beeu so fairly and judiciously made as to meet the requirements of the public inter ests, and stand the test of a fair aud honest investigation. We have faith in many, very many of the geutlemen who represent the people at Atlanta in the coming Legis lature—their ability, wisdom and in tegrity. We are not disposed to yield to the thought that any member of the De mocracy in that body, can be swerved from his integrity by any out-side influence, or worse still, could be pur chased by office or by gold, but yet the times are so disjointed; the people have suffered4SO much; are still hedged in by difficulties on every side; so many have already proved so fuithless, that it becomes the duty of every Rep resentative, conscious of bis own recti tude, not only to do right, but so to bear himself in all his office, as to m ike the people see that he is doing right. Not ouly to adminester justice, but to let the people know that justice is administered. A Trip to Canton. We had the pleasure, one day last week, of visiting Canton, which is about the first town we recollect ever seeing. Canton was a small place the first time we ever saw it, and held its own remarkably well, until the brave “boys in blue,” ournt it up, or rather dowu, notwithstanding it was defended by a few women and children and a few old men aud cripples, who were driven out-of doors, in the rain and cold. — We suppose there are many about Chicago now, who are prepared to ap preciate their condition, if they can not sympathize with such rebels. We shall always think that the burning of Canton was an uunecessarially mean trick. But let that pass. That little village is looking up now, and its inhabitants are staudiug on their tip toes, looking out for the engine, which is expected soon from Marietta. Who kuows but that Canton may be a right smart place yet 1 It is certain to be a place of some importance if the Railroad from this place and Marietta, too, are built* and form a junction there. If the lat ter is built, the, other must be too, or Cartersville goes up. But few of the orgiual citizens of Canton ure there now. R. F. Daniel, Esq., who run a hotel so long, is there yet; and his big brother, Mnj. Edward Daniel, is still on Laud. He is an old citizen, but not uu old man to hurt, for he is yet a bachelor. Some young lady might do worse than to form a matrimonial co partmiship with the Major. Besides the two above mentioned, Solomon Fuller, nnd William Grisham, are the only tuts who were there in the days of “auld lung syne.” There are two remarkable cases of longevity at, or near Canton. Aquila Shockley is ninety-two, and is still üble to walk about, and to woik a little.— Rev. Andrew Grumbling is also nearly a Lunched years old, and is very stout for oi eof his uge. His mind, how ever, has been impaired for several years. Il is said that he has forgot ten almost everything he ever knew anything about, except his Bible aud his Religion. He still loves the one and enjoys the other. It is said that he is regular in his family devotions, and frequently proposes to his aged companion to join him iu family pray er tiie second time, before retiring at night, forgetting that he had perform ed that duty. This shows how strong is the influence of habit—even a good one ! \\ e suppose that father Grumb ling has been a preacher of the Gospel for at least, sixty-five years. What a long ministerial life! It is said that he was a great singer in his day, and possessed musical talents to a consid erable degree, having composed sever al pieces. Those who are familiar with the “Southern Harmony,” will re collect to have seen the name of “A. Grambling,” as a musical author.— We were pleased to see that aged vet eran of the Cross, the other day, “leaning,” like Jacb, “upon his staff, ’’ and though*, he was “an Israelite, in deed, in w hom th re was no guile,’» for "his pi aise is in all the Churches.” Wi.h us, there are many fond, and some snd recollections associated with Canton, through a period embracing a third of a century We could tell of scenes of love, of joy, of sorrow which we witnessed during that time, along the winding banks of our owu loved Etowah. The receut nilio id barbecue at Can ton was a success. Cherokee, Cobb and Pickens counties where represen ted by a large number of ladies and gentleman. The Marietta Cornet Baud was present, discouising excel lent music. Major Petty presided at thei meeting. Able and very practica ble aud sensible addresses were deliv ed by Colouel James R. Brown, of Cherokee; Mr. J. C. Kimball, of At lanta; and Geuerul Phillips, of Cobb. The baibecue, consisting ol beef, mut ton, shoal, etc., was nicely prepared; and the subscription was exceedingly encourugiug. The Cherokee, Mariet ta aud North Georgia Ii alroad will be built. The graud jury of Cobb county, iu their presentments, express the opinion that in their judgment the District Court is a useless institution. —Marietta Journal. Canada. ' Montreal, October 12.—Official re ports state that the Fenian General O’Neil, with a force not stated, cross ed the border at Pembina, and seized the Canadian Custom House and Hud son’s Bay. The post was attacked by United States troops and O’Neil cap tured. It is reported that a larger party had crossed at St. Joe. United States troops are in pursuit. Hewitt, of the Augusta Globe Ho tel, has bought the Catoosa Springs property, and proposes to fit it up as a summer resort. Rome. —Eddie Stillwell, a prominent boy, about twelve years of age, the sou of Rev. C. H. Stillwell, committed suicide last Tuesday by hanging him self. Advertisemen ts.
