ON TOURNAMENTS.
A respected correspondent writes to
know our opinion about the propriety
of holding tournaments for the pur
pose of assisting to build churches.
The subject had never received our
consideration, because we bad not
heard of tournaments in the character
of financial religious devices We had
neard of benevolent balls, and pious
lotteries, and sanctified bazars, but not
of consecrated tournaments. Now, we
believe as Paul did about some com
mon practices of his day, that tourna
ments are nothiug at all to religion.
If a number of young men think it
worth while to spend months in train
ing to compete with one another in the
noble trial of poking a broom-handle
through a curtain-ring, and if the con
testants in this pretty game can call
themselves ‘'knights” and their piny a
“tournament” without a keeue sense of
the ridiculous, in short, if the burlesque
of the old knightly contest can be en
joyed, we see no impropriety iu it more
than in any other juvenile frivolity.
ON JSAIXS.
Many of our young women are en
tirely destitute of resources of self-en-
Joymeut—Unless in eompany, or an
ticipating it, tbeir enui is dreadful; and
wlieu in company, as they have noth
ing in the world to say that any hu
man being ean 4oog endure to hear>
and as they a && incapable of compre
hending what any intelligent person
might attempt to communicate, the on
ly resource is to dance. They can do
that without brums; in fact, it is the
ultimate provision of exhausted society
for the brainlesa And a wonderful
provision it is which enables a graceful
idiot to bear the palm over the less
muscular women of the highest intel
lectual and moral caste, which gives to
man's legs J,he supremacy over all that
constitutes the image of God.
OUR CHURCHES.
But people are not satisfied with the
necessaries of life in religion more than
in other things. We all want to have
churches finer thau we are willing to
pay for. We are sensitive about our
“respectability” in this matter, and we
subject ourselves to mortification of
begging from and getting under obli
gations of recognition and respect to
men uDd men’s inventions really ob
noxious to us.
Cartersville.
Mr. Mainsfiekl not content with his
Steam Grist and Flour Mill in Mariet
ta, intends ere long, we learn to start
a similar enterprise in our sprightly
neighbor city Cartersville. He is a
man that don’t let capital remain idle.
Success to him in all such beneficial
enterprises. —Marina Journal.
LOCAL ITEMS.
«T. X. Gibson, Local Editor.
fitoff* The weather for the past two
days has been rather cool, but very
pleasant.
Good deal of cotton arrived
yesterday, and the top of the marke f
was 12$ cents.
l@u Poi k, by the wagon loads, dai
ly arrives, and sells cheap, ranging
from Bto 9 cents. This is encourag
ing, and there is no danger of a fam
ine—“not any.”
88k. We are informed that Col. J.
W. Pritchett has resigned his connec
tion with Rev. J. L. Pierce, in the Fe.
male High School of this place, and
Rev. Juo. T. Norris takes the position.
The enclosure around the Court
House was blown down Saturday
night, last. It does present a very
pretty appearance in its present dilap
idated condition.
We are pleased to see our ge
nial friend, Col. Abda Jonsou in town
again, after an absence of several
weeks in New York City. The Colo
nel is as sociable and jovial as ever.—
Going to New York didn’t affect him
in the least.
Owing to the fact that the
weather is good, the sky is cloudless,
and old Sol is shining forth in all his
resplendency, we omit calling the atten
tion of the Town Fathers to the fact
that the side-walks need a little re
pairing.
S&* J ohn Harwell has removed his
blacksmith shop from Sumner’s .--hop
further up the street to the one for
merly occupied by Aleck Headen. col
ored, where he is prepared to do all
kind of work in his line, with neatness,
cheapness and “quickness.” Give him
a trial; he can make or mend anything
from a rat-trap up to a steam engine.
The Cartersville & Van Wert
Railroad train now runs to the resi
dence of ltev. William Cuuyus, two
and-a-half miles beyond Stilesboro.—
Ve are informed that freight will be
received at said point next week; we
chronicle the progress of this road
with pleasure, and in view of its early
completion, hail it as the harbinger of
much good to our town, and the good
people of Stilesboro and Van Wert.
We noticed a train of wagons
passing through town yesterday, which
contained the goods and chatties of
emigrants bound for the heat West.
A v eil, we are fearful that it will not
turn out to be what they anticipate,
namely, an eldorado; and we opine
that their thoughts will often revert
to their old homes among the moun
tains of North Georgia, and that they
will long to return to them, there to
spend the remainder of their lives.
See the flaming double column
advertisement of S. & M. Liebman in
this paper. They mean what they
say, and say what they mean, when
they assert that they are selling goods
at reduced prices. They have a su
perb Stock of every variety of goods,
and sell them 'cheap. We heartily re
commend these gentlemen to the trad
ing public as reliable, accommodating
and in every way worthy of their pa
tronage.
fiSF" The Concert given by Miss
Myra Wilke’s, Music Class, Wednes
day evening last, was a success, and
reflected much credit both upon in
structress and pupils. Great taste
was displayed jn the selection of mu
sic for the occasion, soa.e of it simple
and familiar, and some quite difficult
aud new. We do not like to be invid
ious, where all did so exceedingly
bat we cannot refrain from express
ing our high appreciation of “Jockey
Hat and Feather,” and the “Merriest
Girl That’s Out/’ the manner in
which they were sung was very pleas
ing, and justly merited the applause
which followed them. There was a
large, appreciative and with the excep
tion of a few mischievous and ill-man
nered boys, quiet audience. We wish
that those boys who are so deluded
as to think that shrill whistling, bois
terous talking, and bad behav meat
everyway, make them look large, knew
how very small and insignificant it
made them appear in the eyes of older
persons, if tney did, surely th y would
never be guilty of such conduct again.
Miss Myra and her efficient class
have the thanks of all present, for the
very delightful manner iu which they
were entertained. Mr. W. W. Milam
contributed much to the evening’s en
tertainment, by the performance of
several beautiful pieces on the violin,
with piano accompaniment.
Our town continues to gi
ami will until it gets to be the eii\
North Georgia; there is no evade p
or contradicting the assertion. Eve
ry one who visits Cartersville take a
great liking for it, and almost it varia
bly take up their abode with us, and
thus day by day our population in
creases, which is encouraging, in the
extreme. At the close of the war,
nothing but ashes and debris were vis
ible where now is situated the flour
ishing and thriving town of Carters
ville. Nil dezperandtim was the motto
of our citizens, and undaunted by the
withering, blighting prospects which
were caused by the vandal hordes of
Sheiumn, \\h> al.vays left in their
wake destruction arid devastation,
they went L» work, and worked un

of their labor! If Sherman, whose

Well done, citizens of Cartersville!

Such unexampled success and popularity

their efforts have proved fruitless, while the

ALONE m A MOUNTAIN GORGE.
Snugly emteonsed nmid the wild* of one of

many years ago. with no known protector, save

Here, sniffling the ambient air, wafted from
nature's green sward clinging to the mountain

she iived solitary and alone lor many year*. —
The catamount’s unearthly midnight'yell.land

Now and then she would emerge from her un

around about for one or two months at a tint*.
She was eccentric in her acts, and all viewed
her as a living curiosity.
While from home, she apparently had but one
object, and that was the relief ol her afflicted
sex. Under a belt on her left side, could be seen

she relieve all who applied, that within a few

with only one woman, a noted midwife some
miles distant, to whom she promised to
DIVULGE HEB SECRET
Before dying. In a few years, as the sombre
shades of night began to close around her totter

friend,
* * * * *****
She too. gained quite a reputation for relieving
the stiflei tug of her sex, and strange it may ap
pear—she scarcely ever failM to cure those old
chronic female complaints that had resisted all
ordinary inodes of treatment. Many years ago
the writer of this. while engaged in the Practice
of Medicine, by a little strategy, succeeded iu
nroeuring the secret of this wonderful vegetable
Regulator, which had never been known to the
Medical Profession.
He gave it a fair and impartial trial lu the
treatment of various forms and stages of female
complaints with such decided satisfaction, that
in 11*0 he called public attention to its virtues
in
“GROSS’ MEDICO
CHIRURCICAL REVIEW.”
Combined \\it h other known vegetable Tonics,
having great power over the uterine organs;
with Black Root to act upon the Liver and Bow
els, and Soluble Citrate of Iron to correct the
blow!, he has formed a wonderful combination
for the enre of all Female, Complaints, consider
ing it the only Female Regulator known, and
now offers this valuable coin pound to the afflict
ed female, under the name of
ENGLISH FEMALE BITTERS.
The Medical Profession «t large, have long felt
the need of just such a medicine, consequently it
is not strange that they so eagerly prescribe and
recommend these bitters to their female pa
tients.
If you could see the pile of smiling approvals
and"ecomiunis from physicians and the public
who have cured their wives, their daughters and
their friends, by the use of these Bitters, no
sickly female would hesitate to use them. This
Female Regulator is adapted for old, young,
married or single females, who are affected witn
acute or chronic forms of Uterine derangements.
They cure painful, suppressed, scanty, profuse
or irregular Menstruation. Chlorosis or Green
Sickness. Fluor Albus or Whites. Hysterics,
