Editing A Paper. —Editing a paper is a pleasant business. contains too much political mat ter. people won’t have it. If the type is 100 small people won’t read it. If we publish telegraph Yc pdfls peo ple say they are lies. If tve omit them, jhey say we have no enterprise, cr suppress them for po litical effect, ll we have few jokes, people say we are a r:nile!iead. If we omit them, they say we are old fogies. Il we publish original matter, they damn us for tint giving selections. It we pub list) selections, men sav wc are lay,y for’not writing more and giv ing them what they have not read in some other paper. If we give a man a complimentary notice, then we are censured lor being partial. If we do not, all hands say we are a greedy hog. ll we insert an article that pleases the lad ies, men become jealous. Il we do hot cater to their wishes, the paper is not fit to have in the house. If we attend church they say it is only for effect. ll we don’t, they denounce us ;s de ceitful and desperately wicked. Il we remain in the office and attend to business, people say we are too proud to mingle with our fellows. ll we go out, they say we never at tend to business. Il We publish poetry, we eflect sen timentalism. If we do not, we have no literary polish or taste. Il the mail does not deliver our pa per* promptly, they say ivedo not pub lish “on the ti!nl*•” It it does, they are afraid we are getting ahead oj the time. If we do not pay all bills’promptly, folks say we are not to be trusted. If we do pay promptly, they say we stole the money. Habeas Corpus. It may gratify our readers to know that, om the seventeenth instant, Presi dent Johnson decided that his peace proclamation restored the privilege ol the writ of Habuas Corpus—the ques tion heinjr brought before him on an ap peal from .ledge Underwoods decision, denying the writ in case of a Virginian put in Linbo by the Freedmens Bureau for refi.si'yj to pay a fine of live hundred dollars-i-.-a oegru.* mediately on mis appeal being oiad*>oih the Presi dent and the Attorney tleneral decided against Unpcwood. and tlve Virginian, thank C-d, was set free from the Bu reau’s clutches. We would have been sorry to be lieve- as some would have had us— that Mr, John -on Was paltering with a people entirely in his power, and are, of course, proportionately happy in knowing he is standing squaie up to the honest meaning ofTiis peace proc lamation. The Washington correspondent of the Boston Post says: The colored people have not been slow tc apply to themselves the prac tical benefits of t he passage of the “civil rights” bill. To-day they elaimed ad* mission to all p ins of the galleries in both the lions'* and Senate, and not a doorkeeper h ol the intrepidity to dis pute iheir right to enter. The conse quence was. that there was a very con siderable diffusion ofthe sable element all through the spectators, and hi the gallery lor hi lies /heir nii; l K , rs much preponderated over the wh'tes. Even ! id; s extre mu'eal influences can scarcely suppress their aversion to this wholesale abandonment ofdistine- color, and in many instances were observed to githpr lip their skirts -and make a hasty exit because of the compulsory contact. General Robert Toombs - —The Montgomery Ledger relates that Gen eral Toombs is io Havanna, negotia ting fora sugar estate. The General says that lie intends to make Mexico his future home, hut first he would proceed to France, procure an inter view with the Emperor, and learn trom him his line of plirv. If the Emperor promised to sustain Maximilian, he would tell the Emperor that he had still a little money left with whit b to make a home in Mexico for his family, w hile the balance o| his fortune he was willing to invest in powder and lead.
