JL o c a I. 1 arc authorized to aiiuiuince the name of JESSE R. WIKLE, a candidate for Judge <»l the Con ity Court of Bartow, In ft!! the va cancy of Judge Trippc, deceased. — Election on Saturday, the 23d, iust. Fcb’y 8, 1807. Bartow villk, Jatji. 28. 1867. The friends of Col. E. C. SAXdN announce him a candidate for Judge of the County Court of Harlow, made va* cant by the death of Judje I rippe. K. HENDERSON, J. BOOLE. Old SigllM. Almost every aged sire in the land, has his peculiar signs—his wet moons and his dry moons —his hard winters and his hot summers —his time to kill meat and hie time to hang meat his tunc to plant and his time reap. The following article respecting the proha. bilitiesofan early or a late Spring, we take from the BouisviUe Cturite, ol late date, which sign, it is said hy the knowing ones, to be infallible : j It is the well entertained belief ol m my that the first two or three days ol February determine the weather that is to prevail during the balance of the winter term. Coupled with this is the faith of a number of others, farmers and boatmen, in the instirjets of animals and birds, while others think the weather changes with the moon. Well, this is the 2d of February, the day on which the ground-hog, marmot, or pcccari is supposed to awake from Ins long winter nap, creep forth from Ins hole in the ground, snuff the upper air, take a survey of the premises, a j„:ep at the sun, and make up his mind whether to stay out orj return to his burrow for another snooze until another in-in ol winter is over, Il the sun shines out and the creature can its shadow discern, it x.t once goes back, and lor six long weeks will not return. But j| iii<» Hun id overcast with clouds, or ,*iii~ arc tailing, then it stays out, and Jrnks about, to shake all its lethergy, ,j [s instincts telling tin t winter is ®ver. 'l’u is, a s all good Catholics well know, is ••Candlemas day,” and the weather-wise of the old country have tenaciously clung to the following dis ilteli as a suk r . ..tf.K.ct ie of the coming weather. It very singularly comports with the. supposed Intlnt* and instincts of the giound-hng. too, but whether 4aLe or true our readers can make a note of it, and time will tell the w eat her -u isc : “If Can 1 loin is il iv be clear and bright, Then winter h-» taken another flight; Jf (‘.indicia is ilnv brings clouds and rain, Then winter is gone, not to return again.” t hindlcin isd.l v and the ground bog's advent jire both supposed tut occur on the 2d «1 Ft*b ru ary. Now’s the day, and nnvr’s (he hour, Wo hone grim winter’ll shorn of his power. Stay in bright sun! Heeeavi, come out! Hunt, I Itio lioggy, and risk about. The weather was Warm yesterday, the thermometer ranging about 47 at noon, with heavy clouds prevailing all day. The barometer had fallen only one point toward rain yesterday morn ing, and did r.ot vary until evening, when il receded another point, and was going down very slowly at dusk. The wind, however, had held to, or rather from, the north, with fears en* tamed of another freeze. We will here venture the prediction, that if cloudy or rainy weather prevails led ay, there will he a permanent resumption of navigation, and no more hard winter this season. The Finance Committee of the At lanta City Council have made their re port in relation to the City Treasury, bringing him in a defaulter to the a mount of $47,000. The exhibit also shows the city badly in debt, and pay ing as high as three per tent, a month on borrowed money, ! ' ifirMessrs. A. A. Skinner <s* Cos. are out in an interesting advertisement, in this week’s paper. Their catalogue is a pleasing one to hungry people.— They keep Bacon frfr sale by the cord, or in smaller lots, if you want it. You have heard, doubtless, of lute, a good deal said about Kirkpat rick’s Neuralgia Specific. We were suffering from Neuralgia in the face, last week, and sent down to the Drug Store, late at night, and got a bottle of the Specific, and applied it internally' and externally, and the result was that in an hour we were comfortably snooz ing away upon our couch, as if noth ing had been the matter. We can as sure our readers that this is no yarn manufactured for lilt; benefit of the ven dor, hut a bone flit must so.” If you would act sensibly, under similar cir -ns'ances, imitate our example. 4-# The attention of our readers is •ailed to the advertisement of NTessrs. S. Clayton A Son, who have just o pened out a fresh stock of goods. Ac., in their new and beautiful brick store — just completed. They have an ele gant, new stock of goods, and now is the time to make selections, before they i are picked over. Best A Kramer, Druggists, are out in anew advertisement this week. They have just received and opened a large stock of fresh Dings and Medi cines, many of which should be used immediately to purge and purify the system ere disease ensues. They are both good druggists, and thoroughly understand the critical work of com pounding medicines and putting up prescriptions. They keep a very re spectable stock on hand all the time, and are prepared to furnish almost any thing in their line of business at the most reasonable prices. fi£*y*The finest chewing Tobacco, and we might say the cheapest , in town, is at A. A. Skinner A Co’s store ; or, at least, wc find it so. Try your hand and see if we hav’nt told the truth. 4fe>“lt will be seen, from an adver tisement in this paper, that Mr. R. G. Johnson, of Kingston, proposes to open a school of high ortier, in that place, on Monday, the 25th i:ist. Mr. John son is a crippled Confederate soldier, bears the reputation of a good scholar, and, we think, a nice gentleman, and well deserving the patronage nl the people. Kingston is an accessible place, healthy location, good society, good water and moderate board. Wc wish Mr. Johnson entire success in his very commendable enterprise. fcasjuCocoa-Nuts, a bountiful supply for sale at A. A. Address, JOSEPH T. INMAN, Station D, Bible House. New- York City. Beautiful Extract. The following inimitable extiact is said to have been written by Bishop Herber in one of the very earliest of hie memorable productions: It cannot be that earth is man’s only abiding place. It cannot be that life is a bubble cast up by the ocean of eternity to float a moment upon its waves, and sink into nothingness. Else why is it that high and glorious aspirations, which leap like angels fiom the temple of our hearts, are forever wandering unsatisfied ? Why is it that the rainbow and cloud come over us with a beauty that is not of earth, and then pass off to leave us to rnuse on tl.eir loveliness? Why is it that the stars which “hold their festival around the midnight throne are above the grasp ofour limited facul ties ; forever move us with their un approachable glory And, finally why it .is that bright forms of human beauty are presented to our view and then taken from us, leaving the thousand steams of jur affections to flow back in the Alpine torient upon our hearts ? We are born for a higher destiny than that of earth. There is a realm where the rainbow never fades ; where the beautiful beings which pass before us like shadows, will stay forever in our presence.
