lam partial to (logs. Always like to
have th'-iti about the house. They
have such an intelligent way ol running
right into the entry, and letting you
know when anybody is lurking around,
and then they "buy a deep - muuthcd
welcome home,” when you’ve been
out, which is very relresshmg. To he
sure, they sometimes howl a little too
much at night, when you chain ’em up
in the hack yard, but this is easily
remedied by a proper application of
boot-jacks and paper weights. I own
a dog, black and tan terrier. Has his
ears clipped lo a sharp point, and his
tail amputated. Ta'.l points straight
upwards now, when it was first cut it
was inclined to curl. Tendency was
so strong that it threw the dog into a
frightlul scries of somersaults, that
must have ended liis existence if I
hadn’t tied him down. After that I
nut the fragmentary caiidut-in splints,
and he gets along now with only a
slight liilch in his hind legs, that gives
him the appearance ol travelling in a
continuous canter.
He was a nice dog, used to look very
ferocious and llv around the room
when anybody siid "rats,” although l
never knew him to catch any. Rut he
was great at raw beef. In that respect
I never saw his equal.
He answered to the name of“Jar*.”
I suppose there must be several mil
lion dogs who reji i e in the same
corrupted cognomen. Jack strayed
away a week or two ago, left the
manna of my hotisfc for the flesh-pots
of some beguiling stranger, 1 suppose.
Missed him when l came home ; house
seemed empty without him. His
‘ hark” wasn’t on the sea” or m the
parlor, or in the second story Iront, or
any where else. Children erjed for
him, while our Thomas cat no longer
mounted hurridly on the chairs and
tables as he approached. 1 was dis
tressed* I consulted with my wife, I
advertised lor him, offered live dollars
reward. Advertisement appeared in
the morning papers.
Ring at the door bell about 6 A. M.
Whole family in bed, Rise and put
my head out of the window. Alan
with two spotted dogs, that looked as
if they had just recovered from a severe
attack ol the measles. Fellow looked
up ami wanted to know "if either one
ol them was him.” Don’t use profane
language, so simply said "no,” and
shut the window .
Door hell rang eighteen times w ithin
the next hour. Got up at last and
dressed. Began to eat my breakfast.
Anoiln r ring at the bell. Short man
with shiny hat. Wore what my oldest
girl called “spit curls.” llad a hull
dog, with a head like a cast-iron water
spout, and crooked legs. Said he’d
found my dog. Told him that wasn’t
him. Said he knew tl was, rather
savage. I) g began to giowl, and
looked hard at me. Assumed a mild,
I er.-uasivc tone, and tie. cribed my lost
canine. Fellow said, anyhow Ins was
a better dog than mine, and he guessed
he would leave him. I said I wouldn't
have him under any circumstances.
Fellow pushed the dog. and said B—s
—ketch ’em.” Hog made a dash at
me. Springing inside, and shut the
door in his face. Went in the parlor
ami watched him lease through the
front gate. Saw another man coming
in. Had a redieulous poodle with a
brass collar .troutnl bis neck. Threw
up the window, and told him that
wasn’t my dog, so he needn’t bring
him in. He eyed me with a sarcastic
smile, and said 1 couldn’t afford to
own a dog like that. Told him I
didn’t want to, either. Said that dog
had killed his nineteen rats in four
minutes, he had* Said I wouldn’t be
lieve him it he crossed his bieast to it.
Fellow then dared me to come out.
Said he would poke me in the nose,
something ol that sort.
i didn’t go out.
Another ring at the bell. This time
a lellow in a fur cap, and a yellow
mongrel that had but one eye. Asked
me if I had lost a dog. Said yes. Fur
cap said he hail found him and wanted
the reward. Told him that wasn’t my
dog. Fur cap wanted to know if my
dog wasn’t named Jack. Said he was.
He then called his bilious looking can
ine by that name. Dog flapped his
attenuated tale against the pavement
three or four times, and flung his un
damaged optic around in a wild sort of
style. Wasn’t convinced however, and
the lur cap left after breaking the third
commandment in the most horrid man
ner.
Hadn’t got lairly "t the house before
there was another call. This time a
chap in tattered raiment, nothing pur
ple about him but bis nose, and no fine
linen on him, or coarse either, r.s far as
1 could see. Had a big black and tan
terrier with him. Dog looked a good
deal scared. Had a way of putting his
tail between his legs, Alv impression
is that the fellow went out and limited
up the Jog to get the reward. Didn’t
seem to take kindly to his education.
Syntax was defective Said he had
“fetched back that dog ofyourn.”—
fold him that was not the one I had
lost. Fellow insisted that it was.—
Seemed rather downhearted because 1
wouldn’t take lum. Asked me if I
didn’t observe how glad thtf dumb beast
was to see me. Said 1 hadn’t observed
i*. Fellow said I’d regret it it 1 let
such a chance sltp to get a valuable
beast Said I guessed I'd ha*e to let
her slip. Then he thought awhile, and ,
asked me tl l Wouldn’t lend him live
dollars an\ how, and take the dog as sir*
curity. Told him 1 was unable to per
ceive it precisely from tear standpoint,
< o he w ut away, looking as if he Kit
hurt.
Then another man came wiih j fierce
looking hound, with hairless tail, Hound
rushed ri«ht at me. and commenced ex
ercising olfactories up and down mv
trousers, honked as if he might bile
with «*ery little provocation. Man stiid
he’d brought my dog. Told him rather
shaip my dog was a terrier. Saul so
was this one. ( aught rats before his
eves open, and had been engaged in
that blood-thirsty occupation every
since. 'Told him 1 couldn’t take him.
Man said he wouldn’t leave without
the five dollars. Said I would see him
in the tomb of theCapulets first. Fel
low thought 1 was swearing at him and
struck at hip. Dog look it upright off,
flew ad me and tore my imwsers, lie
sides tasting mv flesh. I escaped into,
the entry shut the door and locked it.
Determined not lo answer any more
rings. Bell was pulled two hundred
and seventy-five times more. Didn’t
answer it. I Uderstood afterwards
that several of my friends had been to
me, and gone away offended. About
dinner-time went up and looked out of
the window. Found seventy-five or
eighty men there, all of whom had dogs
Bull terriers, spaniels, setter pups,
bloodhounds double-nosed pointers,
Newfoundlands, lap-dogs, whiflils
grey hounds, mastifis, mongrels. Dogs
with straight tails, curly tads, hob tails,
and no tails at all Ye! «w black, while,
brown, spotted anil flea-bitten. I sup
pose that ever went on four legs or
three either, were gathered in my front
yard. Put the sash up. and attempted
to disperse the crowd. Crowd all com
menced to talk at once. Dogs all
howled, yelped, barked and snarled.—
Couldn’t hear my own voice, and shut
the window in disgust.
Haven’t seen in) dog yet. Don’t ev
er expect to see him. Don’t want ev
er to see him, or any other dog. Have
seen enough ol dogs to last me the bal
ance of my n i'utal Ii le.
Horrible stories, in circulation con
necting dogs with restaurant sausages.
Hope my dog is tucked away in some

made into one large sausage, and the

one sitting.
