JLoc a I. BCS-'Wc are authorized to hiiiiounce the name of THOMAS R. COUCHB', of Kingston, Ga., a cantli date lur Judge of the County Court oj B'ftow, at the Election on Saturday the 23d inst. Feb’y lu. 1807. are authorized to announce the name ol JLSSE R. WIKLK, h candidate for Judge ot the County Court of Bartow, to till the va cancy of Judge Trippc. deceased.— Election on Saturday, the 23d, inst. Feb’y «, 1807. Bautowvillk, Jan. 28. 1867. The friends ot Col. R. C. SAXON announce him a candidate (or Judge of the County Court of Bartow, made va cant by the death of Judge Trippe. R HENDERSON, J. BOGLE. VST We are requested to state that a Union Prayer Meeting will be held at the Methodist EL Church, in this place, on every Wednesday night. The pub lic are respectlully solicited to attend. UstfrVVe urge upon our town author ities the importance of discontinuing the burial of the dead in the grave yard lomerly attached to the Baptist church in tins place, and the the taking of steps for its removal. The town is rapidly building up m that direction, and it is located on one ol the most commanding eminences around the place. By removing it, many more beautiful building tots will be brought into in n ket, which, otherwise, will j mar the uniformity of our streets and j place, m well as brmg the grave yard ii the very heart of the private resi deuce part ol the town. Stop the in terment of the dead there now, and it will not I e a very great undertaking to remove those who have alrcad) been buru-d there, but let it continue anoth er year ot two, aud U Will be impracti cal to attempt it. Tut: Election Saturday.— Don’t forget the eiteitoii for Judge of the Count) Court, to-morrow. There are lon e candidates in the held, and all ol them are worth) men and well quali" tied lot iht-pout. A). 11. Hill, late of the Confederate States Army, at $3 00 per annum. We -are in receipt of the February number ol this excellent monthly, at:d find it well stored with interesting reutintseu ajcs of the late wai, to which tl is largely ly devoted. Every one who was a sol dier in the late war ought to take it. Bankrupt law has been re vived and passed the Senate, with a mendments, and now goes to the House ior concurrence. Il it is passed and again becomes the law of the land, it will be a great measure of relief to men who are hopelessly involved in debt. My-Ageuts are wauled to sell the life ind campaigns of General (Stone wall'' Jackson. See advertisement. The Washington Chronicle states that General Grant favors Slevens”Mil itary bill, wnich recently passed the House of Representatives. iwy-The weather is beginning, very much. to resemble the Spring of the year, it is mild and pleasant. The birds are renewing thesr carolls, and the earth to dou her verdant robe.— The farmer is busily engaged in pre paring the soil for the reception of seed. Gardening is commenced in earnest. — May we not reasonably hope that the chilly blasts of winter are over, aud But spring is drawing near ? Me publish a sensible article under the head of•• Stand Firm,” which we take from the Daily Louisville Ky. Courier, and commend it to our readers. The day. we fear, is porlculious of e \il to the South. We arc now in the midst ot a perilous ocean, the waves <*f fanaticism roll high, and the surging biilows threaten the overthrow of the old ship of State. The storm rages v Uh great fury, therefore, let each man be at his post, aud determined to do his whole duty, let come what will.— Let tis maintain our Christian integrity and dignity of character, by meekly submitting to whatever requirements the national authorities may, by brute force, impose upon us; but let us ‘stand firm.’ True patriotism is admired by the brave aud magnanimous every where, but false pretensions are detest able alike to God aud man. YY bile we are to manifest an obedient aud law abiding spirit, let us not compro mise our dignity by selling our buth right for a mess of pwttage. Let us only be true to our God, our Gounlrv, ourselves and the principles of consti tutional freedom, and, notwithstanding our political horizon mey be environed by cloud alter cloud rising dark o’er the way, these clouds may be big with mercies, and, ere long, burst aud scat ter blessings all over our conqueied laud. The poet has beautifully said : “God moves in a mysterious way His wonders to perform." Let us accept the situation without murmuring, “lest,” as Getnalial said to Paul in regard to persecuting the saints, “ye be found lighting against God,” for, if the present or any future measures ol Congress for our humilia tion be adopted simply as such, it will come to nought, but if by divine di rection, we cannot prevent it, resting, at the same time, in the fact that •T. uth crushed to the ground will rise again-’ ®csuCoiigress seems to disagree as to the best plan to govern the South.— Several bills have been oflered and fully discussed, and divers amendments and substitutes urged, con ercnce commit tees have revised old r< jeeted bills and presented them tor adoption, and each bi oicli ol the great assembly have la bored to concur in their respective measures, but up to the present noth ing has received the constitutional vote of that hod) ; though we need nut be surprised to learn, at any time, the pas sage of a law again inaugurating the sword and bayonet as the law power ol the South. Lotus expect the worst and hope for the belter. If any mea sure is adopted, we will, in due time, advise our readers of it. How to Kii.l a Town. —Run every one oil w ith unreasonable charges for lots, and Broadway, New York, rents. Slick your hands in your pockets, and discourage every enterprise in every wav, if you do not see a dollar in it for your greasy stocking. Loaf about the street corners, content to curse a bad fortune and sponge on somebody for a drink of mean whisky. How to Build a Town. —Encourage every one who is worthy and active in spirit, ti) purchase and improve pro perty. Go to work, stimulating enter prises that are legitimate, by uniting your industry, influence and capital in the common “poi.” Live for others as well as lor yourself. Cultivate a public spirit, and talk less than you work, mean what you say, and demon strate your sincerity by a strict obser vance of punctuality, liberality and in dustry. Prefer to wear out your pants about the feet and let no one see they aie patched in the seat. ®f%,Fflder the late law. Congress re" assembles on the 4th of March. Per haps no further legislation will be at tempted on any of tlie important mea sures now belore Congress, as they would be subject to the President’s pocket veto. The terms of office ol several U. S. Senators expire and new ones will take their seats, a majority of whom are radicals, which will aug ment their ranks and make them more invincible. Then we may look out. JS-We are in receipt of the first number of the j aihj Opinion , which has just commenced its career, in the city ol Atlanta, with new type, nevr presses, and a complete new outfit, and is published by our old friend and con- Irere, YY illiam L. Scruggs, late of the New Era , Editor and Proprietor, at $G 00 a year, $4 00 for six months, and $2 00 (or three months. It is quite a neat aud readable sheet, with well filled columns, and is ably edited and well arranged. We cheerfully welcome it to our exchange list, and wish the new candidate lor public favor a prosperous career. T M COMPTON, Jlgent, CARTERSVILLE.
