Affray at C artersvii-le. —'I’lie Rome Courier, of the lOiii, contains the paragraph below : We learn from a genth'inon, who was there at the time, that a Captain Terrel, who was a Confederate scout of con* ffitlcrable notoriety in this section, during the latter part of the war, was very severely, and probably fatally wounded, by an elderly gentleman, by the name of Sattlefield, at Cartersville, on the night of the 13th instant. It seems that Sattlefield accused Terrell of being implicated in the killing o! his son; and, lor this reason, made an attack upon him inflicting dangerous wounds with a knife. Sattlefield gave himself up, and was lodged in jail. We refrained, in our last issue from commenting upon the above alluded to rencounter, because of the many con~ Hiding rumors. Captain Terrell died about 24 hours after the aflray. Mr. Satterfield made no effort to escape, but gave himself up. On Saturday last the prisoner was brought before hit* Hon. Judge Milner, who is now holding court here, on a motion for Hail. The prosecution was represented by Col. J. It. Parrott, the Solicitor General; Col. Abda John son, of this county, and Col. Wash Johnson, ol Dalton, and the prisoner was represented by Col. 11. P. Farrow, ol Atlanta. A fter hearing the argument the prisoner was released upon giving bond. Effects of Confinement. — The fol lowing paragraph is travelling round ; We have authentic intelligence that att interesting event has recently «c~ curred in the family of Jefferson Davis, the famous prisoner o 1 State confined at Fortress Monroe. His elegant and amiable wife, who has so nobly shared It is fortunes, has herself been confined ! And If 10s s boy we’ll dress him up in fray, And he slu 1 fight the Yanks as his daddy in his day. Emmerson Etheridge.— The Bristol JYews, ami other papers, have nomina ted Hon. Emmerson Etheridge for Governor •( Tennessee. IKas~‘‘An Irishman being in church where the collection apparatus resem bled an election box, on its being passed to him whispered in the car rier’s ear, that he was not naturalized, and could not vote, but he was ready to make a speech. B£*k-A clause has been put in the Army Appropriation bill, by Senator Wilson, disbanding all militia organ ized in the South, and prohibiting their reorganization, until authorized by Congress. tS3T A Texas paper, in illustrating the advantage of advertising, states that a gentleman advertised the loss of a silty dollar note, and found it in his pocket before he reached home. A Fearful Estimate. —The Atlanta Era computes the number of destitute in Georgia, who have not the actual means of subsistence, to beat least fifty thousand. The Cabinet. —All the members of the Cabinet, save one, are said to have expressed their decided opposition to the Reconstruction Bill. Tlie Operation of the Bill. The New York 7'imes, alluding to the orders issued by General Schofield, commander ol the First Military Dis tinct, a copy of which appeared in our columns yesterday morning, says : “The key-note to the execution of the law is already struck by General Scho field in Virginia. In assuming com mand of the First District, with head quarters at Richmond, that officer notifies all civil aulhorlies under the provisional State government to con tinue in their duties till he may otherwise order. In this way he wisely avoids that peril of anarchy which was fea;ed by some statesmen as the inevitable issue of the bill. He proposes to exercise military power “only so far as necessary to accomplish the objects for which it was confer red.” commanders will take the same ground—save, perhaps, in exceptional quarters like Texas, or at some unusual epoch like that of a turbu lent election. In this way the desired revolution in the feeling of Southern society will he accomplished, and none the less effectually for being smooth and noiseless.” “Lives there a roan with soulsn dead, Who never to himselfhath said,” ltohack’s Bitters—they are the best— To npp tite they give a zest; , Tto re • re none so good, none so pure, D senses none will so surely cure. Take it my friend If you’d be wet 1 , Take it and to your ne gtibors tell Wondeious story of their north; Te'l It, and let t e word go forth, Health is wealth, and that means greenbacks, One thing batte-, that is Roback’s Tennessee. —It is said the opinion is beginning to gain ground in Wash ington that Tennessee needs recon struction, and it is possible measures looking to such an object will be inaugurated before Congress adjourns. There is no disputing the fact that a worse state of affairs exists there than in any other State engaged in the late rebellion, and it was that which induc ed the leading Republicans to determine that the ten Sta es affected by the Mil itary bill should not be turned over to the loyal leaguers scattered within their limits.— Jntet/igen cer. Relief. —The Savannah Republic can has the following paragraph : This equinoctial northeaster now blowing, will bring to our port in a few' days the United States steamship Memphis, witii six thousand five hun dred bushels of corn, a peace ofiering from the Southern Relief Association of the North to the destitute of the State of Georgia. If we know the feeling of Georgia, a dove with an oli,ve btanch, telling of a storm passed, would not be more welcome. A few may sneer, many be inclined to thrust this messenger of charity away, but the great heart ol the people, will beat with feelings too big lor utterance in words of gratitude. If the military bill should be sus tained by public opinion in the north, the south will he less a subject of pity than the nation of lamentation. For, mournful as is the 'sjectacle of a free, high-spirited, and vanquished people subject to the rule of the bayonet, it is not to be compared in terrible tragedy with that ol a nation of republicans so false to their historic memories, to their fundamental principles and their life long training, as to be willing to curse any portion of their countrymen with the horrors of military domination. When men love freedom so little as to be willing to enforce tyranny on their fellows; w'hen their recollection of the glorious deeds of their ancestors fighting against a stamp act and a tea tax is so feeble that they r.re ready to rear the sword of power above the scales of jus tice ; when their habitual devotion to sell government is so slight that they consent to become the instruments ot wresting from their own countrymen the right to their own rulers and frame their own governments —they have begun the inevitable march that will convert them from the instruments of tyranny into the slaves ot a despot. He who will consent to enslave a free man is fast preparing to become himself a slave. —Xational Intelligencer.
