AND MR. ASTOR CAME. The very latest London anecdote toncerning Mr. William' Waldorf Astor dates from a certain dinner party given by the eccentric ex patriate at wh: ’1 the Hon. Joseph Chamberlain and his wife were guests. The two started in ample time, but owing to a street blockade were delayed and arrived one minute late. Ushered into the reception room, they found it vacant. The guests had been seated promptly on the stroke of the hour. Mr. Chamberlain wasn’t worried! “Teil Mr. Astor to come and con duct Mrs. Chamberlain to the ta ble,” he said in his blandest tone to the flunky. “Y-y-yes, sir,” said the servant, with one glance at the awe inspiring monocle. He must here delivered the mes sage. Air. A .or came. V/nil's a Cities. The nrmsgif modern warfare tench her anotln r le- on, showing how vain are her world old walls and watch towers against I’ellona’s modern equipment. She might as well tear them down and lay out boulevards on their site, as many ancient wi tern cities have done, for any good they will hereafter be to her. Golf and Mushrooms. A mushroom fiend bewails the I popular denseness which permits the wholesale destruction of puff- : balls bv golfers and other “ignora muses.” “Why, on the golf course,” he says, “that 1 have been in the habit of frequenting a bushel of de licious food is destroyed every day by wanton golfers, who make prac tice swipes at the round, white puff balls they encounter on their way.” Although the common meadow mushroom is gathered assiduously, other equally delicious species, among them the puffball, are ig nored, all on account of the popu lar dread of the deadly aminista.”— New York Tribune. • —— Our Naval Guns. j Plans are being drawn in the bu reau of ordnance at Washington for the resighting of all the guns in the United States navy. The cost of this work will be tremendous, but its necessity was readily realized when called to the attention of the president, and the orders have al ready been issued. An improved variety of sight will be used, and the | work will be pushed with all the ra- j pidity practicable. For the rapid 1 lire guns a telescopic sight will be used, of a kind that will permit of continuous aim. Nearly all of the guns are in need of resighting. Warned In Time. A pushing young actor who is playing understudy in one of Mr. Barrie’s plays found his opportuni ty the other night through the ill ness of his principal. He according ly flooded his managerial and in fluential acquaintances with tele grams announcing, “I play So-and so’s part tonight.” Except that the theater was comparatively cmp.ty, this breathless disclosure produced jio result- merely a telegram in re ply from Mr. Barrie to this effect: “Thanks for the warning.”—Lon don Mail. Wealth and the Point of View. Representative Heatwole of Min nesota was asked about a mutual acquaintance who lives in the con gressman’s district. “Is he rich?” was one query. “Well, that depends on geography,” said Air. Heatwole. “Out at home we consider him very rich. He is worth about $1,000,000. If he lived in New Jersey, 1 sup pose he would be thought fairly well to do, while if he lived in New York folks would be dropping dol lars in his hat” Hay 5100 a Ton. If they are sick or out of order, they fail to do their work. Pains, achesandrheu matism come from ex cess of uric acid in the blood, due to neglected kidney trouble. Kidney trouble causes quick or unsteady heart beats, and makes one feel as though they had heart trouble, because the heart is over-working in pumping thick, kidney poisoned blood through veins and arteries.* It used to be considered that only urinary troubles were to be traced to the kidneys, but now modern science proves that nearly all constitutional diseases have their begin ning in kidney trouble. If you are sick you can make no mistake bv first doctoring your kidneys. The mild and the extraordinary effect of Dr. Kilmer’s Swamp-Root, the great kidney remedy is soon realized. Games of identification are those in which part of the players try to guess the names of the others from the appearance of their eyes, ears, noses or lingers. The players are divided into two parties and stand in adjoining rooms, in the doorway, between the posts of which is stretched a piece of cloth or paper with a hole in the middle. Each of one party now puts a finger through the hole, and each of the other par ty guesses who its owner is. As the guesses are made they are recorded, and when all have guessed lie who has made the most correct guesses is the winner. The parlies then change places.
