i VIRGINIA LETTER
What a Trip to Washing
ton Reveals.
WHERE WAR RAGED.
Scenes of a Numb r of the Blood)
Battles of the Sixties —
Cld Manassas-
Tnis is a regular spring morn
ing. Last niglit we had a shower.
But this morning the sun is shill
ing brightly. I almost feel that
lam back in old Georgia The
wriest fidds are beginning to shine
and soon the whole landscape will
1 e a panorama of living grpen.
Vet with all this, when I look upon
the woods, which are putting on
their varied tints, I am reminded
that fall is truly here.
Not long after arriving here, I
joined a large party of excursion
ists, who were now going to Wash
ington, D. C , to take in the many
interesting sights there. I venture
to assert that, for the same dis
tance, a more interesting route
could not be found for an old sol
dier who hid served with the gal
lant army of northern Virginia.
As I pass and along and heard the
stations called out, most all of thtm
brought back some scene enacted 1 *
during the war, some of which
my command had participated in,
not all of which when we were
going towards the enemy. Fisher’s j
Hill and Strausburg were two of ,
the most noted places. Here sev
eral severe battles and many minor
ones were fought. At Straus
burg was one of the most disastrous
stampedes of our army in any cam
paign of the valley. It will be le
membered that the career of the
armies in this valley was very
checkered; tnauy miles were trav
ersed by each, in their marches up
and down. How the good people
managed to save auythiug to live
upon is a miracle, but the good
women, with a smile and benedic
tion, would divide the last morsel.
Passing from the valley, through
Thoroughfare Gap, it was not
long before we were passing
over the Manassas battle grounds.
As we looked out upon the coun
try, we were vividly carried back to
the sixtie c fjrin many places could
be seeu long rows of tents, with
groups of soldiers, and much of the
paraphernalia of actual war; at
several stations soldiers were loaf
ing around as of old ; but what a
difference in playing soldier in
time of peace and actual warfare.
Going on, we passed through
the old town of Alexandria, and
were soon on the renowned long
bridge over the Potomac, upon
which many couples have been
mated, some for a long life of hap
piness and some for a very check
ered career.
Long before reaching the cap.-
to! city, the monument could be
seen, toweling above everything
else. After satisfying an appe
tite that was making urgent de
mands, we started out to see the
sights. You need not crfnge, f<jr I
am sensible enough not to to under
take a description.
The nearest place of interest
from our hotel was the Capitol.
Here we were taken in charge of
by guides, who were very pleasant
in showing and explaining the
sights; next was the Congressional
Library, the finest of the govern
ment buildings, with a tunnel for
the transmission of books to and
from the Capitol.
At the treasury our guide was a
negro, who was very polite and
we'Linformed upon the workings
of this department. With a few

I did not feel like mounting the

what parts of the globe they came.

Healthy Mothers.
Mothers should always keep in
good bodily health. They owe it to
their children, Yet it is no unusual
sight to see a mother, with babe in
arms, coughing violently and ex
hibiting all the symptoms of a con
sumptive tendency. And why should
this dangerous condition exist, dan
gerous alike to mother and child,
when Dr. Bosahee's German Syrup
would put a stop to it at once? No
mother should be without this old
and tried remedy in the house—for
its timely use will promptly cure any
lung, throat or bronchial trouble in
herself or her children. The worst
cough or cold can be speedily cured
by German Syrupv so can hoarseness
and congestion of the bronchial tubes,
it makes expectoration easy, and
gives instant relief and refreshing
rest to the cough-racked consumptive.
