6 NORTHWEST GEORGIA One of the South’s Rich est Sections. CAPT. CONNER WHITES Of the Advantages of This Section in the Fair Edition of the Macon Telegraph- At the lequest of Hon. C. R. Pen dleton, editor of the Macon Tele graph, Capt. J. J. Conner contrib utes to that paper, the following tribute to north Georgia: With some diffidence I comply with your request to pen an article for the Fair issue of your valuable journal, with respect to the coun ties composing the northwestern portion of Georgia. With diffidence, because of my feeble ability to deal with a theme cf such magnitude and vast importa. ee- Indeed an insight may be had of the gigantic proportions of the theme in hand when it is understood that Georgia is reall) the Empire state of the finest section of the greatest and grandest republic that the sun ever shone upon, and that the northwestern counties co inpose the garden spot of Georgia; surely such an occasion could not with great propriety be placed in abler hands. In the beginning it is not out of place to state that nature seems to have exhausted itself in bestowing its gifts upon this section of Geor gia. The country being at the southwestern extremity of tiie chain of mountains known as the Blueridge, has surface formation of hills and vales pregnant with grandeur and beauty quite as at tractive as eye ever beheld. The hills are groaning under the weight of immense deposits of ores, lime, cement and vaulable mines now' in the inception of development. The creek and river valleys are im mensely rich in plant fertility and laden with golden grain and eecy stapie, now enjoying the active attention of the busy harvester. The country is already dotted with prospeious little cities and towns linked together by railroads already in acme operation, while others are being planned and projected for construction. So it may be truthfully said that ibis favored spot of the Good Lord’s creation is keeping fully abreart of this ad vancing age of activity, progress and development. THE FARMING INTEREST- As 4hove indicated, the natural advantages to this section of the state, in point of natural resources to the husbandman, are, perhaps, unequalled in any other portion of Gtoigia. The country is, in the main, owned and controlled by a sturdy yeomanry in whose veins fl6ws the purest, richest and best blood ot the Anglo-Saxon race. In their activity for a higher plane in the world’s civilization aud ad vancement they ate not lagging be hind but are keeping fully abreast of the times. The result is that ::c section of the state is marked by greater strides in progress, so far oe iu tsfrrir*!ilhtrf* rru. ~~ I • - ‘ - o' ■ They re sow engaged in harvest ing a. and putting upon the market an ltn mise crop. The prices they are i< .ving for the same are satis factoi ml remunerative. All of vvliK ends to stamp upon the couii an air of independence, com 1 nt and prosperity. V a sense of deep humility am .ltude to a beneficent prov ident- hese noble faimers greet then fnren of other sections of the st • with peace, plenty and happi 1 ess. In 1 mmoH with other portions of the date, this section has ob tained and is getting its share of the g eat cotton manufacturing plants that are at last seeking theii natural place in the world’s topography. Many immense estab lishments of this character are al ready completed, and are, seem ingly, in * prosperous operation, while others of equal magnitude •re in process of construction. In the manufacture of articles for food made from • the cereals this section is perhaps in advance of other portions of the state. This, however, is quite natural, as this section of Georgia is the best adapted to the production of grain and especially of wheat. In the manufacture of-articles made from w'ooa and the metals northwest Georgia is keeping pace with other sections of the state and South. Certainly there is no other sec tion of the state so bountifully and richly blessed in mineral resources as is northwest Georgia. The counties of Bariow, Polk, Floyd, and some others abound in iron, manganese, cement, lime, kaolin, ochre, and many other minerals of magnificent value and importance to the industrial world. As before indicated, these minerals are now in the inception of mining devel opment. The word ’“inception 11 is used from a comparative stand point. for the business of mining in these counties has been success fully going on for quite a while. Big fortunes have already been made pt the business; but only the surface ores have yet been mined and only a beginning has been made on the exhau*-tless supply of the deposits. Then the ores in the main are not manufactured into ar ticles of tise at the mines, but are shipped int he crude state to facto ries elsewhere where they are pre pared for the world’s use. Right here we may pause with amaze ment at what stupendousness will attend the harvest when the world shall come to witness the bound less and exhaustless resources of Georgia manufactured into arti_ cles of use by our own people with their resultant profits. A POLICEMAN’S TESTIMONY. | J.M.Paterson night policeman of Nashua,Ta.,w rites, “Last winter 1 had a bad cold on my lungs and tried at least a half dozen advertised cough medicines and had treatment from two physicians without getting any bene fit. A friend recommended Foley’s Honey and Tar and two thirds of a bottle cured me. I consider it the greatest cough and lung medicine in the world.” Healthy Mothers. Mothers should always keep in good bodily health. They owe it to their children, Yet it is no unusual sight to see a mother, w ith babe in arms, coughing violently and ex hibiting all the symptoms of a con sumptive tendency. And why should this dangerous condition exist, dan gerous alike to mother aud child, when Dr. Bosehee’s German Syrup would put a stop to it at once? No mother should be without this old and tried remedy in the house —for its timely use will promptly cure any lung, throat or bronchial trouble in herself or her children. The worst cough or cold can be speedily cured by German Syrup; so can hoarseness and congestion of the bronchial tubes. It makes expectoration easy, and gives instant relief and refreshing rest to the cough-racked consumptive. Without good red blood a man has a weak heart and poor nerves. Thinness of the blood, or anemia, is common in men and young women, and all those who work indoors, who do not get enough good ox ygen in their lungs, consequently have too many white blood corpuscles. Keep the nerves nourished, the heart strong, the head cool, the stomach vigorous, the liver active with a tonic which has stood the test of time and has a wide repu tation, such as Dr. Pierce’s Golden Medical Discovery. Tonics consisting of large portions of alcohol, iron or cod liver oil, do not bring the desired changes in the blood, because they do not enter the system and are not absorbed into the blood, with the excep tion of the alcohol, which shrivels up the red blood corpuscles when it does come in contact with them. Therefore do not allow the dealer to insult your intelligence by telling you he has something better than Dr. Pierce’s Golden Medical Discovery. The cost of ma 'ling only.
