CONDENSED STORIES.
When Ingalls Turned His Sarcasm on
Senator Hoar.
The lafe Senator Hoar was a great
stickier for the forms aud courtesies
of tin* senate as apjfliod to others,
but was more frequent with lug vio
lation of them than any of his col
leagues, says the Chicago Tribune.
Ije had a habit of lecturing the sen
ate on the proprieties, and this, too,
caused a feeling of resentment.
The brilliant Ingalls, whose wit
gnd sarcasm often encountered those
of Mr. Hoar, was not friendly to the

Massachusetts senator. t)uring the
Arthur administration Senator Hoar
and his colleague, Senator fhnves,
vigorously fought an appointment
made by the president. Their feel
ing was bitter, and it \Y - as reported
that there might be a repetition of
the Conklmg-Garfield episode, Yvhen
the NeYv York senator resigned.
When the possibility of Senator
Hoar’s resignation yy hs mentioned to
Mr. Ingalls the latter derisively ex
claimed :
“Senatof Hoar resign? Not
much. When it comes to that point
he will rise in his place and present
the resignation of Senator Dawes.”
Didn't Cut Out Papa.
An ambitious and high thinking
young ensign in the navy,_ whose
salary is $1 IG.tiG a month, recently i
married the daughter of a rich man, j
say.-.- the New York Woryd. .Thai
ensign has ideas of his own about j
the propriety of his wife being du- ;
pendent on her father, and' he up-'
portioned his salary for her sup
port.
“Now, dear,” lie said, “of course
I know your father is rich, but that
makes no difference. We must steer 1
our own ship. We must not depend
on him. I have arranged matters
so that you can have SSO a month
out of my salary, and I think we
should not send any of your bills to
him, but pay them ourselves out of
that allowance.”
The wife agreed and brought her
hills to her husband. The one
he looked at was $G2.50 for roses,
lie gasped and stammered, “I guess
we can't cut papa out just yet.”
The Eoy Patriot.
During the American tour of the
Irish poet, W. if. Yeats, an instruct
or of the University of Pennsylva
nia said of him at a dinner in Phil
adelphia :
“Air. Yeats, even as a child, was
intensely patriotic.
“At school one day x his teacher
read to the class Macaulay’s ‘Hora
tius’ and at the end of the reading
said:
“ ‘Would three soldiers nowadays
be likely to hold a bridge against a
whole army?’
“ 'No, sir,’ said the class.
VY ouiu three ningiioiiiueii, mi
example?’ the teagher continued.
“ No, indeed,’ cried the boys.
“‘Would three Irishmen?’
“l'eats jumped to his feet. His
eyes flashed.
“ ‘One Irishman,’ he said, ‘would
do it.’ ”
Didn’t Want Them Pawned.
Mrs. Ballington Booth tells of an
incident in one of her rescue mis
sions, says the New York Times.
She was putting a little waif in bed,
folding new clothes and teaching
her a childish prayer. “Now, follow
me,” said Mrs. Booth, “and say as I
say:
“ ‘Now I lay me down to sleep.’ ”
The child repeated the words.
“ ‘I prav thee, God, my soul to
keep,’ ” continued the missionary.
“I pray thee, God, mv clothes to
keep,” was the version of the child.
“No, not clothes, my child. I'll
take care of your clothes.”
The little girl jumped to her feet
in terror. “But won’t you pawn
them?” she asked. “That’s what
they alwavs do at home when I have
new clothes.”
British Army Ration?.
An. cmftKA'ejvcy ration, paclw}*.in
a small two eomjfahrrtcht cylinder
of tin, is carried in the haversack’
of every British soldier. As its
name suggests, the ration is not to
be used except in cases of the direst
necessity. One compartment holds
four Ounces of cocoa paste and the
other a similar quantity of concen
trated beef.. If consumed in small
quantities it will maintain strength
for many hours.
Ruled by Women.
Tiburon, an island in the gulf of
California, is ruled entirely by wom

of the Sevis tribe of Indians, for
merly numbering about 5j,000, *but
now shrunken to a few. hundreds.
They live in almost complete isola

Indians of the mainland. The wo
man is head of the household, and
a council of matrons conducts pub
