All Owing to Sex.
Atlanta, Ga. March 28, —Work-
ing women in Atlanta offices de
clare they must be 50 per-cent
more efficient than men performing
identically the same service in or
der to get the same salaries paid
to the men.
There are some exceptionally
valuable business women who
draw handsome salaries, but the
average run are able to show,
they claim, that the modern busi
ness world has not yet reached the
point, at least locally, where a
woman doing a -man’s work is
paid a man’s wage.

SENATOR SMITH THINKS WAS WITH
! IGERHANY STRUGGLE WITH PROPORTIONS
Atlanta, Ga. March 28, —If any
person thinks that war between
the United States and Germany
which is now generally regarded
ascertain will he for the United
States a war on paper, w.th no
bloodshed and no expensa, he is
yery much mistaken, as predicted
by United States Senator Hoke
Smith of Georgia, who is here for
a short rest, and as borne out by
recent developments in Washing
ton in the last few days.
War with Germany will mean
war on a huge scale, according to
Senator Smith. It will mean that
the United States government will
sanction loans of prodigious sums
of money to the Allies, probably
going as high as a billion or even
two billions of dollars. It will
mean that the tjaval forces of the
United Satet will co operate with
those of England and France to
sweep German submarines from
the seas and keep open the hints
of steamer travel. It will mean
that trie coasts of the! United
States will be guarded more close
ly than they have been since the
Spanish-American war. And it
will probably mean that the
U nited States will callJfor a voN
unleer army of at least a million
men and train these men for a
year lor the purpose of sending
to France if the Allies have not.
been able in that length of time to
bring the German Kaiser £p terms
of peace.
It will take a year, as Senator
Smith points out to train an army
of recruits to the point where they
are ready toi activoservice, and it
will be that long before the Allies
feel the need of men, assuming
that the war will last another
twelve months.
Georgia Leads in Deposits
Atlanta. Ga March 2s, —-.Vyw
England, with a population of
only 6,887,463, has saving"! de
posits oi 81,746,909,506; while the
south, with a population of 25,-
;*u3,4;:8, has savings deposits or
only 8176,281,890.
Georgia leads southern states in
amount of savings deposits, but
South Carolina leads in the amount
oi each depositor's savings on the
average.
These and other interesting tig
tires are cited in the Keystone,
house organ of the Southern State-
Life Insurance Company of this
city, as showing the pre-eminent
need for thrift in the south. The
issue is devoted entirely to the
subject of thrift, and many strik
ing facts and tiguivs are presented.
More Advertising.
Atlanta, Ga, March 28, —That
a largtv amount of money wilt he
spent lor advertising in 19.17 than
ever before is asserted by the heads
of the large advertiseing agencies
ot Atlanta, which are making
plans for a great year’s business.
And it is a significant fact, to
which they call attention, "that
advertisers who formally spent
most of their money in the maga
zines of national circulation are
now buying more and more space
in the newspapers. This has been
strikingly demonstrated recently
in Atlanta by the apperance in the
the local newspapers of large dis
play advertisements of several
concerns doing a national business.
Recent improvements in news*
paper typography, press work,
illustrations, eet., permit practi
cally as good display advertising
in the newspaper a s in the
magazine.
