THROUGHOUT ®JI COUNTY. FOli 1). The weather for the past week has been very oppressive. The thermometer registered for two days at ioo degrees, with a gale of •Ainu from the northwest which should have produced a lower tem perature, but was ineffective on ac count of the high degree of heat accompanying it. We were told that it resembled the winds of Texas largely. The crops of this section began yielding to it in a few hours and had it continued longer there is no doubt but what the damage produced by its pres e ;ee, would nave been immense. Prof. J H. Jolly commenced his school again last Monday, at Oak Grove. Farmers are most through with their crops in this vicinity. The people of this community were surprised last week when they noticed that it was The News! and Couraut instead of the Cou-j rant alone. The two names form ! an excellent title and we wish for the enterprising editors in this their j new field of work a successful ca reer. Miss Mollie Whitaker, of Ligou. | is visiting relatives at Chattahoo chee. The threshers have at last come J in hearing distance, and we are! eager for them to hurry up, for the flour hairel is running low and the; pocketbook lower. We had a nice shower of rain i here last Monday evening. While plowing last week we: found one of those hollow stones ! which geologists have so often de- i scribed as holding the remains of j many things pertaining to the vege-1 table and animal kingdom. We don't know what it is in the one we have. It resembled asbestos to a very large extent before hand ling, but when handled it looked like white clay of some kind. The shape of the rock is fashioned af ter the form of a diamond and un der the glass has every appearance of having passed at some time through a melting process. The color of the rock when broken res embles a dark shade of slate, but upon close examination it’s found to be a compound and would be identified as belonging to the black flint species.
