Tney Clear Lands of all Kinds cf
Weeds and Bushes-
MUCH DESPISED ANIMAL MAY
Yet Prove a Great Help to Farmers
lnteresting Experiment
in Missouri.
Columbia, Mo., August, 2. —As
a result of experiments which have
been conducted here during the
last thiee months, the much de
spised and underestimated goat
will at last have an opportunity to
prove himself to be an important
factor in Missouri husbandry. In
fact, he may in time be considered
indispensable. His value lies in
his appetite for weeds and useless
shrubbery, upon which it has
been proven he can subsist entirely,
and even grow fat, while demon
strating his ability as a benefactor
by clearing lands of obnoxious
vegetation. At the same time he
manures the soil ai*d enriches it
for tuture service. In yet another
way does the farmer profit by the
experiment, for the flock while
thus employed increases in number
at an astonishing rate. Thus does
the goat prove himself four times
a benefactor. He clears the land
of weeds and shrubbery and at the
same time fattens himself for mar
ket. He enriches and fertilizes
the soil, and at the same time, ob
ligingly, multiplies, supplying the
owner with another generation of
goats for future service.
The experiments in question
have been in progress since May i
on two large farms, each of which
lies about one mile east of Colum
bia. Dr. A. W. McAlester, dean
of the medical department of Mis
souri university, and well known
as a breeder of race horses, and
Mr. I). D. Moss, of the Columbia
vaccine farm, have conducted the
experiments, which have resulted
so successfully as to exceed their
highest expectations.
Before beginning the experi
ments last spring a consultation
was held with Dr. H. J. Waters,
head of the state agricultural expe
riment station, who encouraged
the project, and gave much advice
and assistance. Mr. Moss pur
chased mongrel goats at the Kan
sas City'market, paying an aver
age of $2.25 apiece. He turned
the goats on a pasture, thickly
covered with iron weeds, buckber
ry bushes and other obnoxious
shrubbery. The work of the goats
was carefully observed; not only by-
Mr. Moss, but by many other farm
ers, who are demonstrating a lively
interest in the experiments. Th'e
goats went at the weeds with sur
prising alacrity, and demonstrated
convincing evidence that their re
markable diet was thoroughly ap
preciated. The lands had been
previously pastured with young
cattle, so that no grass remained.
This act did not worry the goats.
They settled down to the work in
hand as though they had been
trained for the job, and soon began
to make rapid headway, cropping
the shrubbery close to the ground.
Daily notes and observations were
made during the entire f three
months of the experiment, and
some interesting facts were discov-
ered. The observations indicate a
preferment in the following order:
Him shrubbery and the rose' fam
ily, the latter consisting of and in
cluding dewberries, blackberries,
1 grapes, crab apples, etc; hazel
| brush and buck brush; hickory and
1 the wafer ash. The goats bark the
iatter plants with their horns.
Their relish for weeds is in this
order: Narrow-leaf dock foliage,
white top, pokeberry leaves and
stalks, iron weeds, thistles, bur-,
dock, mu lien, gympson weeds and
dog fennel.
As before stated, the profits de
rived are in several wgys —the
clearing of the lands, the enrich
ment of the soil, the rapid increase
in number and the fattening of the
herd for market. It is believed
that the profit from the latter is
one of the principal results to be
considered. The diet causes the
goats to greatly increase in weight,
and when sent to market they
bring a much higher price than the
amount paid for them. During
the time that the goats were at
work on the Columbia yaccine
farm, only one was lost out of the
entire flock.
The experiments by Dr. McAl
aster were conducted in a similar
manner, and with equally favorable
results. Among his goats he has
a bunch of the Angora breed, and
hem?ld th*t the* latter -4id better
work than the scrubs, and were
equally 'satisfactory in rapid breed
ing.

tliat these experiments are well
worthy of attention, and serious
consideration. The importance of
the goat as a factor in the agricul
tural industry of Missouri has been
clearly demonstrated. Other far
mers in Boone county are already
experimentinting with goats on a
small scale, and there is little doubt
that many more will follow the
same example. The recent gen
eral rain has given the farmers
new strength, new hope and am
bition. They are now in a mood
to give attention to new ideas for
their advancement and profit, and
it is believed heie that the an
nouncement of the remarkable re
sults of the experiments in quest
ion is timely and may do much
good.
Dr Walers, of the state agricul
tural college and experiment stat
ion, has demonstrated his deep in
terest in the matter, and when
questioned for the Globe-Democrat
was emphatic in declaring the im
portance of the recent discovery as
to the value of goats in the capac
ity of farm laborers. He believes
that much profit can be derived and
much labor saved by the farmers,
if they follow- the example which
has just resulted so successfully.
Bribing a Voter
spine Moments.
An election petition was being
tried, and a witness was called to
prove “bribery.”
“One of the gentlemen says to
me. ‘Hodge, you must vote for the
tories,’ ” said the witness.
“And what did you answer to
that?" asked the counsel.
“Well,” says I, ‘How much?’ ”
“And what did the agent say?”
"He didn’t say nothin’, The
other gentleman comes to me, and
savs ‘You must vote for the lib
erals, Hodge..’ ”
“And what did you answer?’’
“I said, ‘How much?’ So lie arst
me what t’other gentleman offered,
and 1 told him five shillings.”
“And what did the liberal agent
do?”
“He gave me ten.”
Counsel sits down triumphant,
and up starts the other side.
“Did you vote lor the liberals?’
“No,”
“Did you vote for the tories?”
“No’ I ain’t got a vote.”
