Stated He Killed President Because Enemy of Working People. Auburn, N. Y., Oct. 29. — At 7:- 12:30 o’clock this morning Leon Czolgosz, murderer of President william McKinley, paid the ex treme penalty exacted by the law for bis crime. He was shocked to death by 1,700 volts of electricity. He went to the chair in exactly the same manner as have the majority of murderers in this state, showing 110 particular sign of fear, but in fact, doing what few of them have done —talking to the witnesses while he was being strapped in the chair. “I killed the president because he was an enemy to the good peo ple—of the good work people. I am not sorry for my crime.” These were his words as the guards hurried him into the chair. A moment later, mumbling through the half adjusted face straps, he said: “I am awful sorry I could not see my father.” It was just exactly 7:11 o’clock when he crossed the threshold, but a minute had elap;ed and he had just finished the last statement when the strapping was completed, | and as the guards stepped back I warden Mead raised his hand at 7:12:30 and Electrician Davis turned the switch that threw 1,700 volts of electricity into the living body. The rush of the current threw the body against the straps so hard that they creaked percep tibly. The hands clenched sud denly and the whole attitude was one of extreme tenseness. For forty-five seconds the full current was kept on and then slowly the electrician threw the switch back reducing the current volt by volt until it was cut off entirely. Then just afer it had reached that point he threw the lever hack again for B&rnum’s Monkeys “All well—all happy—lots of fun”. That is the regular report from the monkey cage of Barnum’s Circus ever since the keepers began dosing the monkeys with Scott’s Emul 9n. Consumption was carry ing off two thirds of them every year and the circus had to buy new ones. o>e day a keeper accident ally 1 roke a bottle of Soott’s Emi sion near the monkey ud tire monkeys eagerly lapp' it up from the floor. The body’ which had collapsed as the current was reduced, stiffened up against the straps, when it was turned off again. Dr. McDonald stepped to the chair and put his head over the heart. He said he felt no pulsation, but suggested that the current be turned on for a few’ seconds again Once more the body became rigid. At 7:15 i^ ie current was turned off for good. From the time Czolgosz had left his cell until the full penalty was ’paid, less than four minutes had elapsed. The physicians present used the stethoscope and other tests to determine if any life re mained, and at 7:17 the warden, i raising his hand, announced: I “Gentlemen, the prisoner is 1 dead.” Parties in the Rural Districts who get the free mail delivery, and any others wanting to sub scribe for a daily paper, can make the same terms with the under signed for the Atlanta Daily Eve ning journal, semi weekly and weeklv, that can be made with the home office in Atlanta, we save you tie expense and trouble of writing, remitting, and renewing, giving you the benefits of two papers for the price of one. with all other benefits attached to the semi weekly and weekly papers for yearly subscriptions. They gave a nice, clean exhibition which was deserving of the liberal patronage accorded by our people. Every actor was an artist in his or her class, while the trained animals, the attractions in the annex, etc., were also particu larly good features.
