A killing occurred at Adairsville last Saturday, Henry Paris putting four shots from a revolver into the body of Espasia Smith, and Smith dying in a little while. Paris is a young mm whose home was in the Pine Log settle ment, but who had recently engag ed as a clerk 111 the store of Mr. A M. Cox. Early in the afternoon Smith came in the store and it was said was drinking some. Parris had taken the agency for a life of McKinley and asked Smith if he would buy a copy. He replied, in effect that he had no use for McKinley or any man who would sell the book. Words followed be tween them when Smith said he would shoot Paris, whereupon the latter grappled with him and called Mr. Cox to take Smith’s pistol away from him. Cox found a pis tol in Smith’s pocket and taking it from him, put it in the show case. Smith became very much enrag ed and when Pairis let him go he said he would go home and fix himself. Cox anticipating seriou-. trouble, followed Smith to his home and remonstrated with him ask ing him not to return to where Parris was. But Smith was obsti nate and attacked Cox inflicting blows on him. When Smith returned he was accompanied by his brother, Rob ert Smith, who it has been said tried to get Espasia Smith to stop at the hotel. Robert Smith walk ed up to near where Parris was who was standing on the sidewalk. Esp tsia Smith soon came up the sidewalk and as Parris saw him, pointed his pistol at him an . told him not to come any further, Smith only hesitated a moment and then made demonstrations as if to shoot when some one in the crowd near by said to Parris, “look out he will shoot you:” and Parris seeing Smith as in the act of shooting be gan shooting, emptying his pistol. Smith went and sat on the well platform a moment then got up and started to the Bailey market when he fell on the sidewalk. He was carried in the market where he died in a little whilei After he had shot Espasia Smith Parris saw Bob Smith with a pistol and he advanced and grappled with him. Two shots were fired in tne scuffle that ensued between the two men. They were separated. Parris and Bob Smith were arrest ed and brought to this city that evening. Bob Smith was allowed to give bond and Parris was held for trial. His case was tried yes terday before the superior court, which was at the time of the killing and is now in session.
