NO. 7,
THE IMPORTANCE OF DUST.
Southern Woman.
A great English philosopher,
second only to Darwin as an ex
ponent of evolution,Alfred R. Wal
lace, has written interestingly on
the subject of dust, and shows that
to it is due the glories of the sun
set and of the sunrise.
When the sun is high up in the
heavens we see no -'olor in the
clouds, but when he is near the
horizon his light passes through
a greater thickness of the atmos
phere laden with dust, and the
smaller particles reflect the violet
and blue rays, while the larger par
ticles reflect in turn the green, yel
low and red rays. It will be ob
served that the deep red colors are
nearest the horizon and the delicate
blues highest in the heavens. And
so there are varying densities of
air, and quantities of dust, and
sizes of dust particles, and thus are
produced all of the colors of the
spectrum to be reflected by the
clouds. For a more detailed expla
nation of this phenomenon see the
article in the last “Southern Wo
man’’ on ‘‘Why is the sky blue?”
I do not suppose that many of
the lady readers of the “Southern
Woman” are old enough (?) to
remember the eruption of the great
Krakatoa volcano near Sunda
Strait, between Sumatra and Java,
some years ago, but perhaps a few
of the men may recall the yellow
sunsets we had for a long time
after that awful cataclysm. The
fine dust particles were shot up so
high that they were c.-.rried by the
upper air currents completely
around the world, and so the entire
earth was for a time treated to go!
deu sunsets, due only to dust
Everyone has observed how
mush ckarer the atmosphere, and
how much bluer the sky is in the
■spring time than in autumn, A
little reflection will show that dur
ing the winter, because of the
frozen ground, less dust is formed,
and also that the snows and rains
bring down to the earth much of
the dust from the atmosphere, and
so we have the clear air and deep
blue sky of spring. But just the
opposite is the case in the fall, for
there has been less rain during the
summer, and a greater accumula
tion of dust in the upper atmos
phere, and so we have the yellow
ish air and pule blue sky of the
autumn days.
We have seen in a previous
article that no clouds can form
without dust particles upon which
the atmospaeric vapor can begin
to condense, and so without dust
we would have in day time perpet
ual sunshine —think what a differ
ence that would make in the char
acter of vegetation. To realize it
we have only to travel over the
and lands of New Mexico and
Arizona, as I recently did in com
pany with two delightful club
women of Georgia.
The enthusiastic ladies of the
farm and garden committee have of
course noticed how much more
beneficial a shower of rain is to
plant growth as compared with
any amount of artificial watering.
While this in large part is due
to the very small amount of am
monia brought down by the rain
from the air, yet it is also in part
accounted for by the minute par
ticles of mineral or organic dust
that form the nuclei of each rain
drop, and which are dissolved in
the soil and utilized by the plant
roots.
If you could look up from the
bottom of a very tall chimney lined
with soot you would see the stars
in day time. The explanation is
because daylight is not diffused
down into the depths of the chim
ney where it is as dark as night.
Nor were it not for diffused day
light, which results from the re
flection of sunlight from the dust
particles in tiie air, the sky would
be of inky blackness and the stars

“Be careful,” but we must all
go from heated houses into chill

coughing and wheezing. Avoid

them is not hard if you take Al

when the cold is young and not

The Royal Month and the Royal
Disease,
Sudden changes of weather are espe
cially trying, and probably to none
more so than to the scrofulous and con
sumptive. The progress of scrotula dur
ing a normal October is commonly great.
We never think of scrofula—its bunch
es, cutaneous eruptions, and wasting of
the bodily substance—without thinking
oi the great good many sufferers from
it have derived from Hood’s Sarsap
arilla, whose radical and permanent
cures of this one disease are enough to
make it the rm st famous medicine in
the world. There is probably notaciti
or town where Hood’s Sarsaparilla has
not proved its merit in more homes than
one, in arresting and completely erad
icating scrofula, wnicli is almost as se
rious and as much to be feared as its
near relative.—consumption.
