SHOT IN BACK
WAS KILLER
Eyewitnesses Declare McGee Fired
On Victim From Rear,
TRIED TO KILL COMPANION
The Community Js Deeply Stirred
Over the Killing—Strenuous Ef
forts to Capture Murderer.
Rome, Ga., November 27. —As
details of the killing ot F. L. Mil
ler, near Cave Spring yesterday by
John B. McGee, come to hand the
crime becomes all the more atro
cious.
From the testimony of eye wit
nesses Miller was shot in the back
as he started to get in his buggy
and absolutely without warning.
McGee fired five shots, two taking
effect in Miller’s mule and killing
it. The first and final shots struck
Miller, the last causing death.
McGee, after shooting Miller
down, tried to get a shotgun to
shoot Mr. Hubbard, who was in
the buggy, but was prevented by
John Jones, who was with him.
Miller, Hubbard and a small
son of the former drove to McGee’s
place to look at some cattle. Mil
ler carried his shotgun and fired
into a covey of birds they flushed.
McGee’s children were picking
cotton in a field near by. They
hastened home and told their
father that the shots had fallen all
around them. McGee, in a tower
ing rage, went to Cave Spring to
get a warrant for Miller, but the
justices of the peace refused to
issue it.
McGee started back and came
up to Hubbard and the lad who
were sitting in the buggy. McGee,
in a violent language, demanded to
know why they were shooting at
his children. Hubbard assured
him that no one was doing so.
At this moment Miller came out
of the field and McGee asked him
the same question. He was told
that no such thing was done or
intended. Miller unbreeched his
gun, took out the shells and then
placed the weapon in the buggy:
He staited to get hi, when
McGee shot him in the back. Mil
ler whirled and clinched with the
infuriated man In the struggle
lie was shot to death.
McGee left at once and blood
hounds could trail him only a short
distance. It is thought that he
procured a horse and headed for
Alabama. The pistol with which
Miller was killed belonged to his
son, Frank, who had loaned it to
McGee only a few days . before.
McGee’s wife is a niece of the
dead man.
The community is deeply stirred
over the brutality of the killing
and no effort is being spa: ed to ap
prehend the slayer. Miller stood
high in the community and was
regarded by everyone as a peacea
ble man.
McGee is given to violent and
deadly fits of anger, especially
when drinking. Miller was buried
at his home this afternoon.
A posse of fifty men, accompa
nied by bloodhounds, left Cave
Spring this morning in pursuit of
McGee. He is a desperate man
and the posse expects that he will
fight before being taken.
GIVES HIMSELF UP.
Rome, Ga., November 28.
John McGee, who is charged with
the murder of Frank Miller, at
Cave Spring, gave himself up
today and is now behind the bars
of Floyd county jail.
While being chased by the sher
iff’s posse wita bloodhounds
McGee fell and badly injured his
knee. He suffered intensely from
the injury and sought medical aid.
He called upon Dr. Watts and that
gentleman advised him to surren

McGee then went home, kissed
his wife and children goodbye and

REV. SAM JONES-
Bids Farewell to Mobile Where He
Preached Effectually.
Moliis Herald.
With tonight’s services the grefit
revival conducted by Rev. Sam
Jonts and Rev. George Stuart,
under the auspices of the Protest
ant churches of Mobile, will end.
Mr. Jones will go to his home at
Cartersville, Ga , for a shoit rest
and will then leave for the north
and northwest on a lecturing tour.
Mr Jones and his co-workers
have accomplished much good in
Mobile, which must be admitted
even by those who oppose his meth
ods and mannerisms. A conserva
tive estimate is that one hundred
thousand persons heard him and
Mr. Stuart during their stay in Mo
bile of ten days.
Mr. Jones says that Mobile has
more clever people to the hundred
than any city on earth. He also re
marked that he liked The Herald
notwithstanding the tilts between
him and this paper on the new con
stitution. He said “The Herald is
spicy and snappy; lam betting on
you. You have been furnishing me
with copy and I reciprocated by giv
ing you something to write about.
We part good friends.”
After last night’s meeting, cards
were distributed by the Citizens’
League, recently formed at a meet
ing of representatives from all the
denominational churches, asking
for the names and addresses of all
who desired to become members of
the league About one thousand
persons signed and leturned the
Cards, notifying their acceptance of
membership. Today similar cards
were distributed down town. The
objects of the league are said to be
the purification of city life and to
fight gambling and drinking.

To Shorten Hunting Season-
Atlanta Journal.
Sportsmen all over Georgia are
greatly interested in a bill now
before the legislature which pro
poses to cut down the time in
which game can be hunted or
trapped from December Ist to
March Ist. This would material
ly shorten the hunting season in
Georgia. The law at present fixes
the hunting season from November
1 to March 15.
“The bill ought to pass,” said
one of the best known sportsmen
in the state in the arcade last
night. “The time has come when
Georgia must take the most vigor
ous steps lor the protection of
game, or soon we will have none
worth speaking of.”
But more important still, than
the passoge of laws to protect
game, is the enforcement of these
laws.. If more attention w r as paid
to enforcing the laws we now have
things would not be as they are
now. The real sportsmen of the
state are very much in earnest in
this matter.
