Ga., Dec. ty — Bill Col liar. the negro under sentence of death at Dalton lor an assault on Mrs. McPherson, will not he exe cuted today,’ When the crime was committed and the negro arrested, a special term of count was called by judge Kite, and after a short but sensa tional trial, he was sentenced to hang today. \\ . C. Martin, R. J. McCamy and W. M. Jones were appointed by the court to defend the prisoner, and the time having elapsed for an appeal, it was thought that noth ing would arise to prevent or post pone the execution. A week ago. however, a motion for anew trial was made, but was overruled by Judge Fite. Last night Mr. Jones came to Cartersville and presented an amendment to the motion for a new trial, on extraordinary grounds, chief of which was that the jury was intimidated. That during the trial and while the jury was out a mob was congregated on the outside of the courthouse firing pistols and clamoring for the death of the negro, saying that H th jury did not find him guilty they would lynch him. Rev, F. L. Lingle, pastor of the Presbyterian church at Dalton, has interested himself in the negro’s behalf , and visited Atlanta to ask the governor to commute the sen tence, which was refused. Judge Fite granted a rule nisi and set the hearing for next Wed nesday. Distress after eating, belching, and nausea between meals ere symptoms of dyspepsia, which Hood’s Sarsaparilla always cures. SERIOUS WRECK- On Central of Georgia Near Macon —One Killed and Twenty Injured. Macon, Ga.. Dec. 8. —A Central of Georgia passenger train en route from Savannah to Atlanta was wrecked as it entered Macon early this morning. One person was killed and twenty were injured. The train had just crossed the river when it jumped a switch on top of a high embankment, the engine and tender parting from the train. An appalling wreck ensued. There were ioo passengers on board, and it seems a miracle that no more were hurt. The baggage and express were thrown down the embankment and burned. The second-class coach was thrown upon its side and aiso burned. The first-class passenger car fell over the embankment, and the Atlanta sleeper, filled with pas sengers, caught fire and was de stroyed. Two sleepers were saved The members of the Walter Mains circus were aboard. The only per son killed was Julian Boynton, col ored, of Columbus, Ga. SHE DIDN’T WEAR A MASK. CASTORIA. sear* the The Kind You Have Always BougM FAVORS NEW COURT HOUSE. Mr. W. E. Gllreath Disclaims Sign ing Injunction Papers. Editors News and Courant: I would like for you to have just a small notice, to appear in your next issue, stating that the W. E. Gilreath printed in your last issue as a petitioner for an injunction, to stop the building of anew court of justice in Cartersville, Ga., is not me. I would not like for any of the people of Bartow county or any othe ’ county to think it was me who objected to such a great thing as anew court house for Bartow county, something that cer tainly is needed there. I am a non-resident, but I used to be, and am proud to say that I am a Geor gia raised boy, and especially in Bartow county and am glad to hear of any enterprise that may help or benefit old Bartow. Wishing you great success and a merry Xmas, I am Your friend, W. E. Gilreath. The Alkahest. Gautterson. "The Water powers of Georgia,” by Geologilt Yeates, is practical and illustrated with fine cuts of water falls. A sketch is given of Thomas PL Watson, who has of late become famous for writing the best history of France. The edi torials, book reviews and other departments are up to the high standard established in other issues of this popular magazine. Beware of the dealer who tries to sell "something just as good." Johnson, Of Bartow- Atlanta Constitution. A member of the legislature, discussing the race for the com misionership of agriculture, re marked in the lobby of the Kimball house last night that he would not be all surprised to see Representa tive M. L. Johnson, ol Bartow county, in the race. The gentle man in question is said to be one of the closest of Mr. Johnson’s friends in the house. “I know that he received urgent and numerous requests to enter the race,” he said, "not only from mem bers of the general assembly but from prominent citizens all over the state. I know many of these gentlemen personally, and from what I have seen of the correspond ence I can say it is perfectly nat ural that Mr. Johnson should, in view of these requests, give the matter serious consideration. I regard Mr. Johnson as one of the ablest members of the legislature and one of the strongest men in in Georgia politics today. If he should decide to enter the race I believe he would be elected. I don’t know that he is going to run, but the talk of his entering the race has already led to Colonel Stevens’ friends crystallizing their forces against him. Mr. Johnson at present is sawing wood and saying nothing, but if he decides to talk, you may count on it he will be heard all over the state.
