GrandJurtes In the Past Give Ex
presslon About New Court House
[Under this hend the News and
Courant will publish from week to
week what the grand juries for
years back have had to say regard
ing the need of anew court house
for Bartow county. On the juries
\yere prominent citizens, whose
names are familiar as men of pub
lic s sirit and superior intelligence.
Some of them have gone from
life’s scene of action, but their
names live in the memory of their
people ]
i rom Presentments Grand Jury, July
term, lS9f>.
The court house is in bad con
dition but we think that any ex
penditure of money further than
to repair the roof would be inad
visable, the financial condition of
the county is such, that we cannot
recommend the building of anew
couit house at this time, however
we admit the necessity of anew
building, suitably located and
hope in the near future that better
conditions will enable us to erect
the much needed building.
The names of the following ju
rors are attached to presentments
from which the above was taken:
Henry J. McCormick, foreman;
Chappel M. Quillian, Jabez M.
GUreath, Nat B. Cannon, James S.
Rnodes, James B, Crawford John
C. Farris, W. H. Stiles, clerk,John

From the Grand Jury Presentments,
January term, IH!*>
Our examination of the public
building show the jail to be in
good condition, except some of
tl e sills under the ceiling over
head. The jailer’s house is in
fair condition. Some leak in the
roof of the court house have been
leportedto us which we recom
mend to be remedied at once. We
fully agree with our honorable
judge as to the necessity ot anew
court house. The delay in our
court consequent upon the noise of
th a trains on the railroads A lo
cati :n removed from the railroad
would reduce very materially our
court expenses, but on account of
the unsettled financial condition
and the stringency in money mat
ters we cannot recommend the
building of anew court house just
at this time but hope in the’ near
future our county may see its way
clear to build anew court house.
This can be done at a greatly re
duced price while utilizing our
convict labor in getting stone for
the foundation, making and burn
ing brick and doi g all the labor
in building the house.
