SCIENCE SKETCHES,
BY MR. A. O. GRANGER —NO. 8.
DUST.
THE HUMAN RACK WOULD BE AN
NIHILATED BUT FOR DUST.
We have seen in the last two is
sues of the “Southern Woman’’
that the beautiful blue of the sky
and of the ocean, the glories of
sunrise and sunset, and other phe
nomena, are due to dust, and now
I think we will be able to satis
lactorily prove the startling state
ment at the head of this article.
The Royal Institution, London,
England, is a society sustained
partly by endowment and partly
by membership fees. Its profess
ors are engaged in original re
search, and the results are given to
the public in popular lectures.
About two years ago I saw the fa
mous Prof. Dewar perform in the
lecture room of the institution
some extremely interesting experi
ments, based on the previous work
of John Aitken.
There were two glass tanks or
huge jars, one filled with the ordi
nary air of the lecture room and
the other with air that had been
passed through a quantity of cot
ton, so entirely filtering out all of
the dust. Then steam was admit
ted to tire glass jars, and in the
first, containing the ordinary air of
the rooai, the white cloudy vapor
of steam was instantly visible, such
as we see when it escapes from a
locomotive. The second glass
tank or jar containing air free from
dust remained perfectly tranpar
ent.
In another experiment a vacuum
was created in the jars, then some
watttfjet in, and then air that had
been warmed was admitted as be
fore, in the one case being the air
of the loom, and in the other air
cleaned from dust by passing it
through the cotton. The water
was allowed to evaporate until the
air in the glass tanks became near
ly saturated. The jars were then
suddenly cooled, when the white
vapor cloud appeared in the one
containing the ordinary air of the
room, while the other remained
absolutely clear.
Now what do these experiments
prove? Why manifestly that va
por will not condense unless there
are particles of dust to form nuclei
upou which condensate n can
start.
If there were no dust in the air
then no clouds could form; if there
were no clouds then there could be
no rain; if there were no rain then
there could be no vegetation, and
if there were no vegetation then
annihilation would necessarily fol
low.
If there were no dust the atmos
phere would become saturated
with moistuie, and as air charged
with vapor is lighter than dry air
the vapor would keep accumulat
ing in the higher atmospheric re
gions, and as it can only coi dense
upon some solid surface ii would
come in contact with the iig er
mountains all over the world, . nd
then there would be in those re
gions a downpour in torrents.
Tfai s would cause a partial vacuum
and draw the light, vapor laden
air from every direction to again
condense into featful storm' < n
the mountain ranges, whose si es
would be tom iuo ravines by tue

INJURED BY A FALL-
Bartow Carter Meets With Painful
Accident at Dallas.
Dallas New Era.
Monday atternoon about five
o’clock Mr. Bartow Carter hap
pened to a serious accident. He
was going up the back stairs at his
father’s home with a load of stove
wood in his arms. His father, who
was behind, spoke to him. causing
him to turn around to who it
was, and in doing so he missed his
footing and fell to the ground, a
distance of about 8 feet. He fell
on his shoulder and head, bruising
them up considerably, but the
worst hurt was his back. It will
be remembered that he was laid
up for several months caused from
injuries received in a railroad
wreck some years ago. His back
was then badly hurt, and it seems
that this fall hurt him similar to
what it did then, but not so bad
ly - .
Mr. Carter was unconscious for
an hour or two after the fall, and
it was feared for awhile that he
could not rally. But he finally got
better, anp is doing as well as could
be expected at this time. There
is a space of about 18 inches be
tween the stairs and wall, and it
was through this that he fell.
His many friends wish for him
a speedy restoration to health.

ECZEMA'S
ITCH IS TORTURE.
Eczema is caused by an acid humor in j
the blood coming in contact with the
skin and producing great redness and in
flammation ; little pustular eruptions form
and discharge a thin, sticky fluid, which
dries and scales off ; sometimes the skin is
hard, dry and fissured. Eczema in any
form is a tormenting, stubborn disease,
and the itching and burning at times are
almost unbearable; the acid burning
humor seems to ooze out and set the skiu
on fire. Salves, washes nor other exter
nal applications do any real good, for as
long as the poison remains iu the blood
it will keep the skin irritated.
