VALUE OF COR
RECTLANCUACE.
The Importance of a Knowledge of
English Grammar.
SOME OF THE DIFFICULTIES
That Beset the Teacher in Hand
„ ng this Subject Successful
ly in the Public Schools.
I wonder how many there are in
Bartow county, outside the profes
sion* who can speak or write a
correct sentence in English, and
know it is correct. Whatever may
be S aid of the man who, as a patron
of a school, objects to his children’s
studying English grammar, or is
indifferent thereto—whatever it
may be said of him that he is wo
fully and wilfully ignorant, or is
the unfortunate victim of an ill
founded prejudice that existed in
the minds of his forefathers and
has been handed down from sire to
son or that he is not such a bad
aian after all, he is not infrequent
ly to be found in the vicinity of a
school, and must be reckoned with
by the teacher.
In many of the schools, it is not
an uncommon thing, as may
be testified, by most teachers who
“have had any considerable length
of experience, to see boys and girls
almost grown enter who have had
no previous instruction in language
and who are as ignorant of the
laws and usages of their native
tongue as a two-year old child is
of the multiplication table. Such
boys care to pursue only one or two
studies—arithmetic is generally
the study to which they wish to
devote most of their time —and
sometimes they can be on their
wav to school unencumbered with
text books of any description, and
with nothing but their dinner
bucket to suggest whither they
have stated.
When once a student has been
allowed to have his own way
in selecting a course of study,
it is hard to get him to take
up some subject that ought pre
viously to have be?n masteied, for
the reason that in age and size he
has probably gone beyond those
who are now pursuing that sub
ject, and it would embarrass him
to be put back with his juniors.
Unless he can begin in the middle
or at the back of the book as well
as at the beginning, he will be left
without a class.
So it comes to pass that the
teacher, who probably already has
about as many classes as he can
well manage, is almost forced to
let the student omit such studies
as he has previously omitted, and
it goes without saying that one of
these is English grammar.
The notion that grammar is
something hard to learn, added to
the prejudice that may already
exist in the mind of the learner
that it is also a useless study,
creates a repugnance which in
some cases it is well nigh impossi
ble to overcome.
There is need therefore of popu
larizing this branch of study in the
public school course. The valile
of speaking and writing correctly
should be stressed by every
teacher. Grammar is designed
to accomplish this end, and
in spite of whatever may be said of
the faults of this text book or that,
most instructors will acknowledge
that these books serve the purpose
lor which they were primarily
written, and that, if studied with
the right spirit and determination,
such mastery of the cardinal prin
ciples underlying our language
will be gained as will enable one
clearly and correctly to express his
thoughts. The text books on
grammar will teach thus much, at
i e ast, just as any work on arithme
tic will teach the four fundamental
principles of addition, subtraction,
multiplication and division.

sentences and the elements of sen

parts of speech, and to do whatever
is required by parsing and analy
sis implies a knowledge that
stambs the individual possessing it
as a person capable of reeson, judg
ment and thought. The ability to
speak and write correctly is no
mean accomplishment, and when
such ability exists there is usually
to be found with it a mental power
that can originate as well as ex
press.
Eet the youth of our country be
taught the value of a thorough
knowledge of the principles of the
Euglish language, a language
whose beauty and power trans
cends that of all others, a language
of infinite scope and variety, made
up, as it is, of elements drawn
from so many different sources,
and capable of giving the highest
expression to the noblest and sub
limest products of the human
mind. The English language has
laid tribute upon all other tongues,
both ancient and modern, and has
exacted from them some of their
choicest expressions. Language
is characteristic, whether that of
an individual or a nation, and as
the Anglo Saxon race has grown
and expanded and flourished, and
become mighty in conquest and
achievement, and has carried forth
the banner of freedom, progress
and civilization and planted it
where before it was not, the Eng
lish language has kept place with
the onward movement of the race
and has shared its glory and re
nown.

Important to Mothers.
The manufacturers of Castoria have
been compelled to spend hundres of
thousands of dollars to familiarize
the public with the signature of Chas.
H. Fletcher. This has been necessi
tated by reason of pirates counter
feiting the Castoria trade mark. This
counterfeiting is a crime not only
against the proprietors of Castoria,
but against the growing generation.
All persons should be careful to see
that Castoria bears the signature of
Chas. H. Fletcher, if they would
guard the health of their children.
Parents, and mothers in particular,
ought to carefully examine the Cas
toria advertisements which have
been appealing in this paper, and to
remember that the wrapper of every
bottle of genuine Castoria bears the
fac-simile signature of Chas. H.
Fletcher, under whose supervision it
has been manufactured continuously

Tha Beys Who Thought Thompson
Seton Was a “Reg’lar Bird.”
If Ernest Thompson Seton chose,
he could write a book on his lectur
ing adventures that might prove as
interesting, though in a very differ
ent way, as his ‘‘Lives of the Hunt
ed.” The other evening he was stop
ped at the theater door by half a
dozen ragged boys, one of whom
said:
“Sav, mister, are you de jay dat
talks about de animals ?”
“Yes”
“Well, say, won’t you give us a
pass ?”
“How many are there of you?”
“Only eleven” (others now ap
pearing).
Mr. Thompson Seton called his
manager and said:
“Pass these eleven boys.”
“There’s eighteen now,” 6aid the
spokesman
“All right; pass eighteen,” 6aid
the man of the beasts, for he never
sends a child away if he can help it.
During the hour and a half lecture
.he had no more appreciative hearers
than those eighteen newsboys. After
it was over he stepped out the back
way, and here were the eighteen
waiting as before.
Their spokesman now came for
ward and expressed the sentiments
of the others in language more
forceful than ornithologically cor
rect:
“Say, mister, that—was —great!
You’re no jay. You’re a bird—a
reg’lar bird!”

Attractive Women.
All women sensibly desire to be at

health because it is the outward man

flush is on the cheek. But when the
blood is impure, moroseness, bad

the tale of sickness, all too plainly.
And women today know there is no
