INSANE MAN'S DEED-
Shaots a Citizen Without Appar
ent Cause and Kills Himself-
Brotvnwood, Tex., Jan. 22. —One
of the bloodiest tragedies that ever
happened in this city occurred to
day. It was so sudden and un
looked for, and absolutely without
an iota of cause, that the people
are convulsed with horror.
At 12:20 p. m. today Clark X.
Jones, of Memphis Mo., shot and
dangerously wounded John VV.
Trapp of this place. Jones, it is
thought, was insane at the time
the deed was committed. After
shooting Trapp, Jones placed the
revolver to his own temple and
b’ew his own brains out.
The shooting occurred at the
corner of a store in front of the
postoffice. Trapp was talking
with a friend standing on the side
walk, When the f.iend turned to
leave, Jones stepped up to Trapp
and without any warning drew a
38-caliber revolver from his pocket
and almost thrusting it in Trapp’s
face, fired; no sooner was this done
thon he placed the same weapon to
his own forehead and pulled the
trigger.
Trapp was carried into a store,
where medical attention was sum
mone’, and afterward carried to
the home of Henry Ford. His
wound is of a very serious nature,
but may not prove fatal.
Jones lay on the sidewalk for
some time, the blood and brains
running from the wound, but was
afterward taken to the undertaker’s
where he died at 2:30 o’clocjc.
Jones, wno is a stranger, regis
tered at a hotel last night,“Clark N.
Jones, Memphis, Mo.’’ He had
considerable money with him and
had deposited the mohey at one of
the banks today. His conduct
about town this morning indicated
that he was not in his right mind.
An officer was going to look for
him when the unfortunate event
occurred.
[Mr. Trapp is well known in Bar
tow county, having taught school
here for a number of years. Late
information states that he will re
cover from his wounds. — Eos J
August Belmont to-day occupies
a remarkable position in the world
of finance. He is president of the
greatest urban transit company in
world, and is known chiefly for
the tunnel he is building in the
City of New York and the gigantic
deals through which he is to unite
the underground and elevated rail
road systems of the city unaer his
own control. The Cosmopolitan
this month publirhes an interest
ing sketch of the man who took
advantage of the opportunity to
raise the millions required for the
Rapid Transit Subway, and is now
endeavoring to persuade the city
to build a complete system of tun

him and his associates. The same
issue of the magazine contains an
admirable article on Henry M.
Whitney, who controls the street
railroad system of Boston, and a
sketch of William Andrews Clark,
the Montana Copper King.
