At its meeting here in February

The Newspaper is Essential-
How much do men owe to news
papers for whatever of notoriety,
reputation or fame they mav ac
quire or have thrust on them! As
the New York Press says: “Your
great man shines before the popu
lace iu vain—without the news
paper. He spreadeagles the Con
stitution in vain—without the news
paper. His clarion voice wakes up
the universe in Vain—without t’ e
newspaper. His most astounding
financial enterprises serve him in
vain—without the newspaper. His
scientific researches and achieve-1
rneuts are iu vain—without the j
newspaper. His wireless telegraphy |
would be an accomplishment of
small merit —without the news
paper. His successes in every
walk of life are in vain—without
the newspaper. The newspaper is
the fame maktr of the age. Of
course some of the fame is cheap,
but it satisfies the the living wearer
of the cloak, even though posterity
change it.’’ Let the newspapers
cease to mention in any way the
names of men who fancy their
fame is secure and they would soon
drop out of sight.
He Obeyed Orders-
One of our well-known con
tractors and builders, while super
intending the erection of a large
brick building, was approached
one day by a late arrival from
Ireland, who applied fora job, and
was employed as hodcarrier, after
being instructed that he must al
ways carry up a certain number of
bricks in his hod, says the Phila
delphia Ledger,
One morning the supply of
bricks ran out, and, although doing
his best, the man could n t find
the usual number to make his
load. After gathering every brick
in sight, he found he was still one
brick short of the usual number.
111 answer to a loud yell from
the street, one of the workman on
the fifth story staging shrieked
down:
“What do you want?”
"Throw me down wan brick,”
said Pat, pointing to his load, "to
make me number good.”
“Ah! darling,” said the Count
de Spaghetti to the heiress whose
prospect had just become deceas
ed: “let me bear your sorrows?”
"Bear my sorrows? Yes, yes,
Count!” she exclaimed, apprehen
sively; "but share your borrows,
never, never!” —Baltimore News.
“I don’t believe that man ever
deceived anybody in his life,” said
the enthusiastic friend. "And yet,” 1
said Senator Sorghum, “you want
me to give him employment. You
don’t suppose I have time to teach
him the rudiments of’the business,
do you?”—Washington Star.
“George,” said Mrs. Ferguson
“the people nex't door to us sent

“I haven’t any time to talk about
the people next door,” broke in
Mr. Ferguson. “I am not asking
you to talk about them,” she re
joined, with firmly set lips, ‘Tildo

I bequeath to my children Scrofula with all its *e
attendant horrors, humiliation and suffering. This is a
strange legacy to leave to posterity ; a heavy burden to Jry
place upon ri:c shvaidets of the young. _ V it
This treacherous disease dwarfs the body and hinders J|
the growth and development of the faculties, and the la
child born of blood poison, or scrofula-tainted parentage,
is poorly equipped for life’s duties. iswW
Scrofula is a disease with numerous and varied \j4usi'
symptoms; enlarged glands or tumors about the neck .• j
and catarrh of the head, weak eyes and dreadful
skin eruptions upon different parts of the’body show the **
presence, of tubercular or scrofulous matter in the blood. This dangerous
and stealthy disease entrenches itself securely in the system and attacks
the bones and tissues, destroys the red corpuscles of the blood, resulting in
white swelling, a pallid, waxy appearance of the skin, loss oi strength and
a gradual wasting away of the body.
S. S. S. combines both purifying and tonic properties, and is guaran-
Sf - teed entirely vegetable, making it the ideal remedy in
DfN ff*S all scrofulous affections. It purifies the deteriorated
blood, makes it rich and strong and a complete and
Kta)) permanent*cure is soon effected. S. S. S. improves
the digestion and assimilation of food, restores the
lost properties to the blood and quickens tlje circulation, bringing a healthy
color to the skin and vigor to the weak and emaciated body. *.
