MINING IN MEXICO-
An Interesting Letter From J W
Shelor to His Grandfather.
The following interesting letter
was written to Mr. C. C. Mince, of
Kingston, by his grandson, J. W.
Shelor, who is well known to many
of our people in the northern part
of the county:
Camp Santo Nino, Sonora, Mkx.
January 29, 1903.
My Dear Grandpa:
I have thought for several
months I would write you a long
letter, but kept putting it off from
time to time and neglected it. I
have often thought of you all,
nevertheless, and wished I could
see you. The folks at home have
no doubt told you of my coming
to Sonora, Mexico, and also told
you of other things about me.
I left Tucson early in December
for Nogales, the Mexican border
town, and from there went to Her
mosillo, Sonora, where I was met
by a party from the camp, viz.:
Mr. Kaiser, the manager, and three
other g utlemen connected with
the Yaqui Copper company. I had
a pleasant three days’ stay in Her
mosillo and enjoyed it so much.
The weather there was just simply
delightful, as it always is in win
ter. Flowers were in bloom and
the orange trees, of which there
are a great many, were loaded
down with fine sweet oranges.
There are many points of interest
in this little capital city of the
"Manyana” country. There is a
very handsome and costly cathe
dral there, and as we were there
on Sunday, I attended services
Sunday evening. Some people
would say that it was nothing new
to visit a cathedral, but such peo
ple have never visited a Spanish
cathedral. It was a very interest
ing sight, and we enjoyed the
sweet strains of Spanish music
from the choir fifty feet above us.
W e went from there to La Colo
rado, via Torres where we spent a
night, early the next morning tak
ing a stage for Mazatan and Cariza
Springs, ninety miles distant. We
rode for two days by stage, sleep
ing on the ground at night and
having nothing to eat but “friolas”
(Mexican beans) and tortillas
(wheat cakes without soda or salt)
At Cariza Springs, which is just a
spring, we had to take to horse
back. After getting all our grips
packed onto the back of a little
burro, we started out. We had a
hard day’s travel by horseback, but
finally landed at camp, and, con
trary to our expectations, we found
good adobe houses, good beds and
plenty of good things to eat, some
thing that the average mining
camp does not have.
This company was organized
only a few mouths ago with a cap
ital of $5,000,000, and, according
to Eastern mining engineers and
experts, it is the largest and rich
est copper vein in the world, and
in a few years will be known as
the largest producer of copper any
where. The president, a year ago,
was a poor man, practicing law in
Nogales, Ariz., but through some
fortunate manipulation he secured
the claim, developed it. and today
is many times a millionaire and
has for his associates eighteen
Eastern millionaires. He has bro
ken all previous records in Wall
street as a promoter and is now
ranked with some of the great fi
nanciers of New York.
We have a delightful climate

“Wine of Cardui is indeed a blessing
to tired women, having suffered for
seven years with weakness and bear
ing-down pains, and having tried sev
eral doctors and different remedies
with no success, your Wir.e of Cardui
was the only thing which helped me,
and eventually cured me It seemed to
build up the weak parts, strengthen
the system and correct irregularities.”
By “tired women” Mrs. Adams
means nervous women who have
disordered menses, falling of the
womb, ovarian troubles or any of
these ailments that women have.
You can cure yourself at home with
this great women’s remedy. Wine

WINE of CARDUI
here and it is never cold nor hot.
I have had very little to do since I
came here and have put in a good
deal of the time hunting deer,
studying Spanish and reading.
Spanish is a necessity here, and
while I speak it some, I am study
ing in hopes of speaking it fluently
in a short time. There are about
ten Americans in camp now, all
the rest being Mexican and Yaqui
Indian laborers.
I have gained twelve pounds
since I came here, and most of my
troubles have disappeared. My
throat is not entirely well yet, but
I believe within the next six
mouths I will be well and sound
once more. My expenses during
the ten months I was in Tucson
were more than SI,OO0 —for treat
ment, c octors’ bills, medicine, etc.
—but lam very glad that I went
there, for had I remained in Texas
I would have been a dead man be
fore now. In a very few months
now I hope to get square with the
world and then I shall be happy
once more.
All the men out here are young
men, and nice fellows. The super
intendent is a married man. We
are about 120 miles Irom LaColor
ado (Minas Prietas) the nearest
railroad station and postoffice.
This is the richest mineral coun
try in the world, so pronounced by
the several eastern experts who
visited here last November with
18 New York millionaires. The
country is in its infancy as yet, but
within the next few years Ameri
can capital will come in here and
there will be many fortunes made
from the mines. Copper, gold and
silver is found in great abundance
and it is no trouble to go out and
find great ledges of copper and gold
bearing ore. All it takes is money
to develop it. There will no doubt
be a railroad in here in a year or
two and then there will be another
great rush to this country by min
ing men just as there was to the
California gold fields in forties and
tothe Klondike a few years ago.
Some day the American people will
wake up and read in great head
lines of the great gold and cop
per to be found in Sonora.
There is plenty of all kinds of
large game here, such as deer,
bear, mountain lions, tigers, etc. I
killed tw r o deer on New Year’s
morning, and one of the boys kill
ed a large mountain lion the other
day. Weexptct to import some
good hunting hounds from Texas
soon and then we will get some
fine game and animal skins. There
are monkeys here, and parrots, and
all the different wild animals found
in the tropics. Every man in camp
carries either a colt or Luger pistol
buckled around his waist with
plenty of cartridges. Americans
can carry all the guns they want
to, but it is against the law for a
Mexican to carry a gun unless he
is an officer. We are all crack
shots and can kill a deer 100 yards
with our pistols and 6co yards with
our Winchesters.
Your grandson,
J. W. Shelor.
Nature “makes all things beauti
ful in their time.” Every one of
life’s seasons, when life moves on
Nature’s lines, has its own charm
and beauty. Many woman dread
that period when they must ex
perience change of life. They
fear that face and form may suffi r
by the change, and that they may
fail to please those whom they love.
The value of Doctor Pierce’s
Favorite Prescription in this crisis
of woman’s life lies in the fact that
it assists Nature. Its use preserves
the balance and buoyancy of th *
mind and sustains the physical
powers. Many worre j have ex
pressed their gratitude for the help
and comfort given by “Favorite
Prescription” in this trying period.
Its benefits are not passing but
permanent and conduce to mental
happiness as well as physical
strength.

Men and women alike have to work
incessantly with brain and hand to
hold their own nowadays. Never
were the demands of business, the
wants of the family, the requirements
of society, more numerous. The first
effect of the praiseworthy < ffort to
keep up with all these things is com
monly in a weakened or debilitated
condition of the nervous system,
which results in dyspepsia,.defective
nutrition of both body and brain, and
in extreme cases in complete nervous
prostration. It is clearly seen that
what is needed is what will sustain
the system, give vigor and tone to the
nerves, and keep rne digestive and
assimilative functions healthy and
active. From personal knowledge,
we can recommend Hood’s Sarsapar
illa for this purpose. It acts on all
the vital organs, builds up the whole
system, and fits men and women for
these high-pressure days.

Swift’s Maxims-
Mr. G. F. Swift, the successful
meat packer of Chicago, whose
death has been recently reported,
had some maxims that are worth
noting. Some of them were as
follows:
Every time a man loses his tem
per he loses his head, and when he
loses his head he loses several
chances.
Next to knowing your own
business, it’s a mighty good thing
to know as much about your
neighbor’s as possible, specially if
lie’s in the same line.
The richer a man gets the more
careful he should be to keep his
head level.
The best a man ever did shouldn’t
be his standard for the rest of his
life.
You can never make a big suc
cess working for anybody else.
Ramon’s Tonic Regulator is the
most popular all round medicine
we have ever handled. It is a
gentle laxative, a healthful tonic
and prompt health restorer. Hand
some, large tin box 25 cents.
The Stomach Is the Mail.
A weak stomach weakens the man,
because it cannot transform the food
he eats into nourishment. Healtu
and strength cannot be restored to
any sick man or weak woman with
out first restoring health and strength
to the stomach. A weak sto each
cannot digest enough food to feed
the tissues and revive the tire t
and run down limbs and o pans of
the body Kodol Dyspepsia Cure
cleanses, purifies, sweetens and
strengthens the glands and mem
branes of the stomac , and cures in
indiges ion, dyspepsia and stomach
troubles.
The Election of Harrison-
The re-election of Carter H.
Harrison as mayor of Chicago is a
personal victory for him and an
endorsement of h’s administration.
To be elected mayor of a great
city like Chicago for four consecu
tive terms is a marked honor and
a wonderful triumph. The main
question of the campaign was
municipal ownership of public
utilities. Hariison fearlessly and
strongly favored this issue. The
re-election of Hairisen will un
questionably bring him to the front
as a strong possibility for nomina
tion by the democrats for vice
president.
Women as Well as Men
Are Made Miserable by
Kidney Trouble.
Kidney trouble preys upon the mind, dis
courages and leesens ambition; beauty, vigor
Sand cheerfulness soon
disappear when the kid
neys are out of order
or diseased.
Kidney trouble has
become so prevalent
that it is not uncommon
for a child to be born
afflicted with weak kid
neys. If the child urin
—-ates too often, if the
urine scalds the flesh or if, when the child
reaches an age when it should be able to
control the passage, it is yet afflicted with
bed-wetting, depend upon it. the cause of
the difficulty is kidney trouble, and the first
step should be towards the treatment of
these important organs. This unpleasant
trouble is due to a diseased condition of the
kidneys and bladder and not to a habit as
most people suppose.
Women as well as men are made mis
erable with kidney and bladder trouble,
and both need the same great remedy.
