The Problem -Solved-
Once upon a time there Jived a
•woman w)#>se face was a fright,
says the Baltimore American.
Her eyes were not mates.
And neither was her nose.
Her mouth was a misfit, cut on
the bias, and her chin was peren
nially absent.
Her skin resembled that of the
lighter spots on a Mexican dog,
and her color was much more ruddy
than that of a brickbat.
, She had read assiduously all the
information and directions on the
how-to-be-beaut if ul.
She had sent her good money to
lbe beauty doctois everywhere.
But the only reason she didn’t
•grow homelier was that in con
structing her originally nature had
aimed at the limit and hit the bull’s
eye.
One day she was walking along!
the road toward her home, when |
she saw that the floods had under
mined a railway bridge.
Glancing at her watch, she found
that it wasn't running.
.But the trains were.
‘She heard a faint whistle in the
Jistowce. and knew at once that it
was; the lightning express.
Hastily rushing up the track to
ward the -oncoming monster, she
took oil her new spring poppy hat
and waved -it frantically at the,
locomotive.
Seeing the determination in her j
face, and fearing she might use!
her hatpin on the locomotive if he j
didn’t ston, the engineer applied i
the airbrakes and ttae reverse lever
and stopped.
When it became known that she
Hr ad saved the train, and perhaps
the lives of many persons, she was
a heroine.
-Arad when the papers came out
next day, behold! she was “young
and pretty.”
And she wept for joy to know
that at last her wish had come
true.
Carroll’s Rural Delivery of School
Children.
According to the Atlanta Con
stitution Carroll’s Sand Hill School
is about to become a model for the
county schools of the state. In
speaking of Commissioner Travis’s
statement about the school in the
Macon convention, it says:
“It is simply, according to Mr.
Travis’s statement a street car sys
tem in the country by private con
veyances, Which take the place of
the electric cars. The patrons of
the school rented 120 acres of land
and sub-leased 90 acres, from which
they get a money rental. With
that money they purchased a num
ber of mules. Each morning these
vehicles are driven to the designa
ted points, where children congre
gate at a distance of from 3 to 5
miles from the schools and in which
they are carried to the school house.
Then during school hours these
mules and horses are used by the
drivers in cultivating the 30 acres
retained. Alter school is over the
-•same vehicles carry the children to
“he points at which they were col
•iected and from which they are
'<:nea c y walking distance to the;r
ihomes. On the 30 acres enough
tprowender is raised to feed the live
•itock, while the income from the
other rentals more than pavs the
expenses of the entire outfit."

Relics of the Past-
Macon News,
Lisbon in former days was rich
in costly temples, paluces, tombs
and works of art, as the occas.onal
discoveries of the Lisbon Archeol
ogical Association testify. Recent
ly a member of this institution
observed the capitals of the highly
ornate portreo projecting, in an ex
cavation, close to the spot where
the tomb and remains of an illus
trious personage of ancient Lisbon
were inearthed in 1900. Excava
tions were carried out. a gate and
a beautiful mortuary chapel wav
uneartheds containing the tomb of j
a young girl, while within the,
tomb a skeleton clad in a coat or ;
rich brocade was found. The j
fabric is still perfect in color and
fiber, and if proper care is observed,
it may not deteriorate from expos
ure to the air. Further investiga
tion has proved that the skeleton j
is undoubtedly that of the favorite
I daughter of King Alfonso, the child
wife of Count Henry of Burgundy,
grandson of Duke Robert, who j
fought successfully under King.
' lfonso’s banner against the'
Moors in Spain, ana was rewarded '
in 1005 for his services by the 1
monarch with the hand of his
daughter, with Portugal as her
dowry. ,
Sir James Y, Simpson some
years ago established the fact that
in the armies of ancient Rome
there was not only a “medicus
cohortis,” but also a “medicus leg
ionis,” a kind of superior medical
officer. One of the most interest
ing bits of evidence which he
brought forward was a monnmen
ial tablet found at Boreovicus. The
inscription shows that t was erect
ed by the first cohort ot the Tun
grians to the memory of the “tiled
tens ordinarius,” This cohort dis
tinguished itself under Agncola.
! The monument is elaborately carv-
I ed, and this is held to be s.uggest
| ive cf the great esteem and lespect
:in which this ancient army doctor
was held by his comrades. It is
j generally supposed that a cohort
I consisted of 500 or 600 men, and
| each cohort seems to have been
provided with one medical officer
at least. Several monumental
and votive tablets found in other
| pfarts of the world refer to Roman
army medical officers.

When money talks even a deaf

It must have come easy for Adam

No man ever made himself great

Some people would be willing to

-•Putting food into the diseased
stomach is like putting money into
a pocket with holts. The money
is lost. All its value goes for
nothing. When the stomach is
diseased, with the allied organs of
digestion and nutrition, the food
which is put into it is largely lost.
The nutriment is not extracted
from it. The boov is weak and
the blood impoverished. .
The pocket can be mended the
stomach can be cured. That ster
ling medicine for the stomach and
blood. Dr. Pierce’s Golden Medical
Discovery, acts with peculiar
promptness and power on the
organs of digestion and nutrition.
It is a positive cure for almost all
disorders of these organs, and cures
also such diseases of the heart,
blood, liver and other organs, as
have their cause in a weak or dis
eased condition of the stomach.
